Tom Liberatore Wins the North East Auto Four-Cylinder Championship at
Eriez Stateline
By Glenn SlocumTom
Liberatore lived up to the pre-race billing to win the Four Cylinder
Championship event sponsored by North East Auto. Liberatore wrested control from
Larry Bouman on a lap nine restart for the win. Doug Eck led every lap of the
Super Late Model feature to post his second win of the season. Louie DeDionisio
led every lap of the Outlaw Cadet event for his first win of the year. Brian
Crandall and Fred McClanahan won the Spectator features. Scott Bayle led from
green to checkers to win his fourth in the Budweiser Super Sportsman division.
Mike Hess Jr. won his sixth E-Mod feature. Mike Moore meet challenge after
challenge from Pat McGuire to win his first Limited Late Model feature of the
year.
Mark Thompson moved from his outside pole position to lead lap one of the
first Spectator feature. Rush Firestone, Brian Crandall and Mike Boyd completed
the top four. Firestone started smoking on lap seven and Crandall passed
on the outside then made an inside move on Thompson to take the lead with two to
go. Firestone fought back to pass Thompson at the checkers. Crandall was the
winner for the second time this season with Firestone second and Thompson third.
Fred McClanahan spun Kevin Hill to ruin the start of the second Spectator
feature. The next start was successful and McClanahan led the lap with Wayne
Watson and Joe Heslop in second and third. Heslop lost control on with two to go
and Dennis Lunger and Josh Lucas were there to take advantage. Lunger beat Lucas
to the finish for third with Wade Watson finishing second. McClanahan led every
lap to win his second feature of the year.
Jason Smith and Bruce Deimer were on row one the Four Cylinder
Championship event. Smith took advantage of his front row starting spot and was
the early leader with Ken Wanzer and Larry Bouman close behind. Smith lost the
lead by spinning on lap four and Larry Bouman moved to the point. Tom Liberatore
was in second by lap five with J.R. Cross in third as Wanzer faded. Andy
Warzynak caused the only caution of the event when he stopped up against the
turn four wall on lap nine. Tom Liberatore beat Bouman to turn one on the
restart and led the final three laps. Steve Forstein moved by Cross with two to
go for third. Liberatore made it his sixth win of the season and took home the
Championship event trophy.
The initial start of the Outlaw Cadet feature was marred by a spin
involving Dave Tolan and Phil Knight. Tolan was placed back in the third
starting spot and Knight was towed from the speedway. The second attempt was
clean with Louie DeDionisio assuming the lead. Second running Wade Slaney went
to the pints on lap two with a flat. Gary Eicher and Pete Alspaugh tangled on
lap three in turn one for caution number two. DeDionisio was the leader at this
point with Tolan second and points leader John Pencille third. DeDionisio stayed
in low groove and led until Clarence Dickerson steaming racecar slowed for
caution three on lap eleven. Tolan had passed DeDionisio on that lap while
DeDionisio evaded the slowing Dickerson, but because of the yellow was given the
lead back. Pencille moved under Tolan to challenge for second allowing
DeDionisio to build a five-car length lead with two to go. Pencille moved to
second around Tolan but was unable to catch DeDionisio who made it a perfect
evening by winning his heat and leading every lap of the feature event. Pencille
finished second and Dave Tolan third.
Scott Bayle, Mike Murray and Don Stanley were the leaders on lap one of
the Budweiser Super Sportsman feature. Don McGuire, Pat McGuire and Randy
Parameter all passed Stanley on lap three and moved up to press Murray while
Bayle extended his lead. Bayle was in lap traffic on lap six and Pat McGuire had
passed Murray and was attempting to run down Bayle. Parmenter moved into third
with tow to go. The laps ran out for Pat McGuire as he could not catch Bayle. It
was the fourth win for Bayle.
Bill Thomas narrowly beat Al Cressley to turn one to lead the E-Mod
feature event. Thomas then began to build a lead as Cressley, Randy Parmenter
and Dave Hess Jr. fought for the second spot. Hess took the second spot from
Cressley at the half way point then a spin by Justine Carlson brought out the
yellow sending Dave Hess to second and Cressley back to second. Thomas resumed
the lead on the lap nine restart and Hess immediately began pressing Cressley
for second. Mike Hess moved to the number four spot as Parmenter slid to fifth.
Thomas started slowing on lap eleven and the battle for second became the battle
for first. Dave Hess Jr. won the battle as Thomas entered the pits on the white
flag lap. Dave Hess Jr. won the event for his sixth E-Mod main event, Cressley
was second and Mike Hess third.
Mike Moore led Limited Late feature wit h Pat McGuire second and Paul
Briggs third. John Lint brought out the yellow on lap four. Paul Briggs and Bob
Vogt tangled on the restart lap collecting Brian Fardink, Al Cressley, Mike
Coyle and John Lint and the yellow was out once more. Vogt and Cressley drove to
the pits while Coyle and Lint were towed. Vogt and Cressley returned to the
speedway before the lap four restart. Moore resumed the lead on the restart with
McGuire and Briggs in tow. Ed Simmer bought out the yellow on lap ten. Moore
held off McGuire for several laps and began to build a slight lead until Tom
Hagberg dumped a stream of oil on the speedway for the third caution with two to
go. Moore was up to the challenge and though allowing McGuire along side on the
white flag lap held on for his first win of the season.
Doug Eck jumped to the early lead in the Super Late Model main event.
Randy Lobb and Scott Gurdak were second and third and Rich Gardner brought up
the fourth spot. Eck and Lobb ran away from the field in the early laps as
Gardner and Gurdak fought for third. Gardner finally bested Gurdak on lap seven
and Dave Hess Jr. moved by Gurdak to press Gardner. Eck was into lap traffic on
lap ten but Lob was unable to close. Eck maintained the lead through the
remainder of the race with no one able to close and challenge. It was Eck’s
second win of the season.
