Randy Parmenter Wins Troyer Construction Equipment Budweiser Super
Sportsman Championship
at Eriez Speedway
By Glenn Slocum
Troyer Construction Equipment sponsored the Budweiser Super Sportsman
Championship race at Eriez Speedway. Randy
Parmenter 2001 Champion led eighteen laps of the twenty-lap event to notch his
second win of the season and claim the Championship trophy. Dave Hess Jr.
wrenched the lead for Rod Maloy on the second lap of the Super Late Model
feature to win his fourth event. Gary Eicher led every lap of the Outlaw Cadet
event for his fourth win. Dave Hess Jr. survived an early spin to take the lead
on the final lap of the E-Mod feature for his fourth win. Pat McGuire passed
Bobby Rohrer in traffic to win his third Limited Late Model feature. Tom
Liberatore won number five in the Four-Cylinder class. Bill Baker Jr. and Justin
Kreiger won their first Spectator features.

Dave Surenna and Art Churchill brought the first Spectator feature to the
Speedway. Surenna led lap one with Churchill second and Paul Norman third. Ron
Bush spun to a stop in turn three to bring out the yellow on lap three. Surenna
retained the lead on the restart and led the next two laps until a multi-car
incident involving Rush Firestone, Art Churchill and Kevin Brumett brought out
the yellow once more. Bill Baker took advantage of the restart to pass Surenna
but Mark Thompson and Merle Burlingham hooked bumpers bringing out the yellow
before a lap could be completed giving the spot back to Surenna. Baker took the
lead once more and completed one lap before the caution flew once more for
debris on the speedway. Matt Thomas was second with Steve Hulings third. Baker
was leader coming out of two after the restart with Steve Hulings in second but
Firestone spun for another caution with three laps remaining. Steve Keith became
a contender on the restart by moving to second. Baker was not to be out run as
he won his first feature of the year. Keith finished second with Hulings third.
Walt Houser passed Fred McClanahan on lap one of the second
Spectator feature for the lead and led for two laps when McClanahan spun in turn
two for the only caution of the event. Eric Kimmy and Ron Watson were second and
third on the restart. Kimmy made an inside move on the leader on lap six take
the lead. Houser retired one lap later with a flat as Justin Krieger caught and
passed the leader. Krieger led the final two to win his first feature with Kimmy
second and Barrett Brown third.
J.R. Cross won the race to turn one at the start of the
Four-Cylinder feature for the number one spot. Steve Forstein passed Ken Wanzer
for second and then Larry Bouman move to third also passing Wanzer. Bouman lost
the handle on lap six bringing out the yellow. Cross was still first with
Forstein second and Andy Warzynak third. Forstein took the lead on the restart
and Cross fell to third with Tom Liberatore passing for second. Liberatore moved
under Forstein on the white flag lap to lead by a car length at the finish line.
It was the fifth win for Liberatore.
Dewey Kinnear and Gary Eicher were in row one of the Outlaw Cadet
feature with Joe Harvey and Jim Moon in row two. Eicher had a one car length
lead after one with Kinnear in second and Harvey third. Brian Zimmerly and Terry
Daniels tangled on lap three for the first caution. Eicher resumed control of
the event on the restart with Moon and Kinnear fighting for second. John
Pencille passed Harvey for fourth and began to challenge Moon for third when
Daniels had more trouble on the front stretch for the second caution on lap
eight. Jim Moon slowed in turn three on the restart collecting Dustin Eckman and
the yellow flew for the third time. Pencille passed Kinnear on lap eleven as
Eicher continued to dominate the race. Joel Watson slowed bringing out the
caution on lap twelve. Wade Slaney passed Houser for fourth on the restart but
the yellow came out again on lap thirteen for debris. Houser regained fourth on
the restart as Pencille moved up to try and challenge Eicher. Eicher barely beat
Pencille to the line to lead every lap and win his fourth feature event.
Pencille finished second and Dewey Kinnear third.
Mike Murray and Brent Crandall brought the Budweiser Super Sportsman
Championship race to the speedway. Crandall led the first two until 2001 champ
Randy Parmenter took the lead on lap four. A lap four spin brought out Spanky
Halls yellow flag. Don McGuire was second and Bayle third on the restart. Pat
McGuire was running fifth behind Gary Foster. Pat McGuire took fourth from
Foster on lap ten and started to run down Bayle and Don McGuire fighting for
second. Kelly Frederes spun on lap twelve for caution number two, allowing the
field to close up behind Parmenter. Dave Cummings had a mechanical failure and
stopped in turn two to bring out the third caution on lap sixteen. During the
caution Crandall broke and had to be towed to the pits. With five to go the race
was for second as Parmenter ran away for the field. Pat McGuire beat Bayle for
third with two to go. Bayle went in too hard on the white flag lap spinning his
car and causing the checkers and the yellow to end the event. It was the second
win for Parmenter.
The E-Mod feature was
stopped on lap two by a spinning Dave Hess as Kevin Decker led with Tom Anderson
second and Justin Carlson third. Randy Parmenter spun on the restart so the
field was realigned for the second attempt. Bill Thomas took second and Mike
Hess third on the restart as Decker led. At the halfway mark Decker led by five
car lengths. Dave Hess passed Mike Hess on lap ten for the third spot then
quickly passed Thomas for second. Dave Hess moved under Decker on lap eleven but
failed to make the pass as his charge seemed to slow. Dave Hess drove into three
deeper than Decker to make the pass for the lead under the white flag then led
the final lap to win his fourth feature.
It was Bobby Rohrer and Paul Briggs and Pat McGuire out in front of the
Limited Late Model feature. McGuire passed Briggs for second on lap two.
Aaron Robinson stopped on the front straight bringing out the caution flag on
lap five. Rohrer resumed the lead on the restart and Briggs passed McGuire for
second. Tom Hagberg took fourth from Mike Moore on lap ten then Bob Vogt passed
Moore for fifth one lap later. McGuire retook second on lap twelve as Rohrer
moved into lap traffic. Rohrer was trapped behind a lap car allowing McGuire by
on lap fifteen. Rohrer almost spun on the white flag lap trying to catch McGuire
allowing Briggs to pass for the second spot. McGuire won the event for feature
number three, Briggs was second and Rohrer third.
Rod Maloy and Dave Hess Jr. were on the front row of the Super Late Model
event. Maloy led lap one but Hess moved by Maloy on the outside to take control
on lap two. Randy Lobb was third
and Rich Gardner fourth. Andy Kania had trouble on lap four for the first
caution. Doug Eck was running fifth and Dave Shagla sixth. Randy Lobb passed
Gardner and Maloy on the restart but a spin by Scott Gurdak collecting Kania
negated the pass and brought out the second caution. Lobb could not make the
same move on the next restart as Maloy moved down to control the inside lane.
Lobb did take over third as Gardner fell to fourth then fifth as Eck also got
by. Hess was into lap traffic on lap nine with full straight away lead over
Maloy. Hess put car after car a lap down as he moved through lap traffic gaining
a one half-lap lead over Maloy, Randy Lobb and Eck. Jason Morrell came to rest
against the turn four wall to stop the race with nineteen down. Hess was
realigned in front with the lap car of John Lacki between he and Maloy, and then
came Randy Lobb and Doug Eck. Hess powered away from the rest of the field as
Maloy stayed low to thwart Lobb. Hess won the race going away and Randy Lobb
finally got under Maloy on the last lap but Maloy hung on for second by inches
at the line. It was the fourth feature win for Hess.
