Eicher is Outlaw Cadet Champion on Sysco Foods Autograph Night
and
Dave Hess Jr. Wins Super Late and
E-Mod Feature
at Eriez Speedway
By Glenn Slocum
The Sysco Foods sponsored Autograph night included balloons, bicycles and
free candy as race teams and fans meet on the front straight. Gary Eicher
survived seven restarts to lead every lap of the Outlaw Cadet Championship race.
Dave Hess Jr. made the outside groove work to win going away from his ninth
place starting spot in the Super Late Model feature then backed it up with a win
in the E-Mod feature. Art Churchill and Mike Boyd won the Spectator features.
Scott Johnson won the Super Late Model American Racer Dash. Steve Forstein won
the Four Cylinder feature. Dave Cummings won his first feature of the season in
the Budweiser Super Sportsman class. Bobby Rohrer won his third feature in the
Limited Late Model class.
Brad Pease, Ray Houser and Ken
Jackson a collided in turn two at the start of the first Spectator feature.
Houser led lap one and Art Churchill lap two. Duane Pease caught Churchill at
the checkers but came in a car length short of the win. Brad Pease finished
third.
Matt Lazowski took the early lead in the second Spectator feature with
Brian Guzowski second and Dennis Lumger third. Merle Burlingham spun on lap five
causing the first caution of the event. Lumger passed Lazowski on the restart
and led for two laps when Guzowski spun stopping the race for the second time.
Mike Boyd took the lead on the lap eight restart and Paul Norman moved into
second as Lumger slid to fourth. Boyd won with Norman second and Guzowski third.
Larry Bouman was in the lead after one lap of the Four Cylinder feature.
Bethany Pease came to rest against the fourth turn fence on lap four. Bouman
controlled the restart and Pease once more spun in four for caution two on lap
six. Steve Forstein spun Dick Price on the lap six restart. Points leader Tom
Liberatore challenged for the lead on the restart than spun on the front
straight on lap nine for the third yellow. Forstein got by Bouman on the last
lap for the win, J.R. Cross finished third.
Twenty-four Outlaw
Cadets took Spanky Halls green flag for the twenty lap Outlay Cadet
Championship event. Gary Eicher led the first three laps until debris on the
track brought out the caution. Phil Knight brought out the second caution on the
lap five restart. Point leader John Pencille was second with Jeff Campbell
third. Eicher led the next three laps when Knight spun in turn one for the third
caution. Debris in turn four caused caution four on lap ten allowing the field
to close up behind Eicher. Pete Alspaugh spun with five laps to go negating a
ten car advantage by Eicher over Pencille. Knight, Mike Zimmerly, Jim Moon and
Vern Plymire tangled on lap seventeen bringing out the yellow for caution six.
Eicher was up to the challenge and won the event with Pencille second and Jeff
Campbell third.
John Lacki beat Rich Gardner into turn one from his outside front
row starting position on the initial start of the Super Late Model feature but a
caution involving Chris Hackett, Scott Johnson and Al Crocker among others
caused a complete restart of the event. Lacki
did it again on the next start as Ron Olson settled into third. Jason Morrell,
Crocker Mark Boozel and Andy Kania collide on lap three for the second caution.
Lacki controlled the restart. Rod Maloy moved by Olson for third on lap
six and Morrell spun on lap eight. Scott Johnson and Morrell tangled in three
for the fourth caution. Hackett had trouble on the next restart for the fifth
caution. Dave Hess Jr. passed Horduskey and Olson for fourth on the restart.
Hess got around Maloy one lap later and set sail for second running Gardner.
Hess moved up beside Garner on lap fourteen and make the pass in turn four
passing Lacki in turn one on lap fifteen. A snap spin by Boozel brought the
yellow out on lap sixteen. Hess moved up to the cushion and motored away from
the field on the restart. Hackett, Johnson, Crocker and Steve Halpainy collide
in the entrance to turn three on lap seventeen. Halpainy left the track on the
hook as the field was realigned for the restart. Gardner moved into second on
lap twenty-one relegating Lacki to third as Doug Eck moved into fourth. Hess won
by a straight away over Gardner, Lacki and Eck.
Don Stanley was leading the Budweiser Super Sportsman feature when a
fire in Don McGuire’s car brought out the caution on lap two. Pat McGuire
passed Stanley on the restart then Dave Cummings passed McGuire. Stanley
continued to fade as Randy Parmenter moved to third and Scott Bayle to fourth.
Parmenter passed Pat McGuire with two to go but could not catch Cummings who won
his first feature of the season. Parmenter was second and Pat McGuire third.
Dave Hess Jr. continued his winning night by taking over the lead of
the E-Mod feature on lap five and pulling away from the field. Early leader Mark
Grabowski spun on lap seven for the first caution of the event. Mike Hess had
moved into second by this time but could not catch Dave Hess Jr.. Dave Hess Jr.
won the event with Mike Hess second and Justine Carlson narrowly defeating Kevin
Decker for third.
Mike Coyle, Tom Hagberg, John Cline and Andy Knight collided on the
start of the Limited Late event. Bobby Rohrer brought the field around for the
complete restart then led for the next three laps until a steaming Mike Moore
brings out the second caution on lap four. Pat McGuire was in second with Andy
Sweetland third and Bob Vogt fourth. Rohrer and McGuire battled for the next tow
laps when a spin by Al Cressley caused caution three. The top three moved
away from the field as McGuire tried high and low to get around Rohrer. Rohrer
never relinquished the bottom to McGuire and went on to win the event and
Sweetland was third.
