July
10th, 2004 - Scott Johnson Wins Roberts Trucking Super Late Model Championship Race at
Stateline Speedway
By Glenn Slocum
Busti, NY: The Roberts Trucking sponsored Super Late Model Championship
Race at Stateline Speedway was held on a perfect summer evening for racing.
Thirty-two Super Late Models were on hand for the forty lap $5000 to win event.
Scott Johnson took the lead on lap nine of the Championship race and remained
the leader for the rest of the race. Robbie Blair moved from ninth to second and
rookie Paul Briggs started tenth and finished third.
The "I Challenge
You" event winner was Attorney Rob Green with Warren County Sheriff Larry
Kopko second, Attorney Todd Woodin third and the Warren County District Attorney
Rick Hernon fourth. Chris Couchenour won the caution strewn Spectator feature,
which saw only one third of the thirty cars that started finish. The cautions
continued into the Outlaw Cadet feature where Phil Knight survived many restarts
to win his first of the season. Pat McGuire won his third Budweiser Super
Sportsman feature. Dale Applebee won his third feature of the season. Jay
Seekings and Ryan Scott were the Super Challenger winners.
Ted Kosinski and John Lobb were on the front row for the Roberts Trucking
Super Late Model Championship event. Lobb took the early lead with Scott Johnson
second and Kosinski third. Andy Boozel grabbed third from Kosinski on lap three.
David Scott tangled briefly with Kosinski but everyone corrected moving Scott
into the fourth spot on lap six. Scott passed Boozel one lap later as Johnson
and Lobb battled for the lead. Johnson made the pass on lap nine to take the
lead from Lobb. Johnson was into lap traffic on lap ten. Neither Lobb nor Scott
could make up any ground on Johnson as all three battled lap traffic over the
course of the next few laps. Dan Armbruster was sitting partially on top of Dick
Barton’s car bringing out the yellow with eighteen of the forty laps
completed. Armbruster joined the field and Barton made a brief visit to the pits
but returned for the restart. Johnson took control on the restart and Robbie
Blair made his presence known moving into the four then Lobb slipped high losing
two spots giving Blair second as Scott stayed third with Paul Briggs fourth.
Blair moved up to challenge Johnson just as Lobb struck the wall between turns
one and two bringing out the caution. The top five for the lap twenty-four
restart were Johnson, Blair, Briggs, Scott and Dave Hess Jr.. Barton pulled into
the pits during the yellow leaving twenty-three of the original twenty-five
cars. Johnson remained the leader after the restart with Blair, Briggs and Scott
trailing. Chris Hackett was fifth placing Hess in the sixth spot. With ten laps
remaining Johnson led Blair by two car lengths. Chad Valone spun in between
turns three and four with eight laps remaining allowing the field to close with
Johnson. The top five remained the same as the five to go signal was given by
Spanky Hall. Johnson had built a three car length lead when the checkers flew.
Blair was second with rookie Paul Briggs third and Hackett nipping Scott at the
line for fourth.
Ken Jackson and Brian Wagner were on the front row for Spectator feature
event. Jackson led the first lap but as the field crossed the start finish line
Matt Lozowski, Bill Van Volkenburg and Dave Tackett tangled on the front stretch
for the first yellow. Van Volkenburg stopped trying to get into the pits one lap
later for the second yellow. Jackson was still the leader with John Swabik
second and Wade Watson third. Swabik stole the lead form Jackson on the restart
and fourth place running Dave McClanahan spun in three for the third caution.
Chris Couchenour was third with Lester Shoff fourth and John Kelsey fifth. Rick
Thompson moved into the top five on the restart then grabbed fourth one lap
latter as Couchenour moved up to challenge Swabik for the lead. Couchenour led
lap six with Swabik second and Kelsey third. Traffic slowed the top three
allowing Thompson to move into third. Thompson tangled with a lap car suffering
a flat as the red flag flew for Mike Coast who had slowed in turn two with an
engine fire. Couchenour, Kelsey, Swabik, Shoff and Tackett were the leaders for
the restart. Three of the top five, Kelsey, Shoff and Tackett, had trouble in
turn four on the white flag lap. Couchenour and Swabik were first and second
with Rush Firestone third, McClanahan fourth and Skip Joslin fifth. Couchenour
prevailed for his fourth win of the season with Swabik second and Firestone
third.
Cliff Lanphere, Alex Fiesler, Dana Wellington and Scott Lewis were the first
four in the Outlaw Cadet feature. Scott Lewis was pinched up into the wall on
the back stretch bringing out the yellow before the first lap was complete.
Fiesler briefly led during the restart then slowed bringing out the yellow as
the first lap was completed. Phil Knight was first with Lanphere second and John
Cline third. Andy Knight slowed on the restart and the yellow quickly followed
the green. Cline turned in front of the pack on the restart but all the cars
evaded then one lap later Cline spun again in turn one bringing out the yellow.
Phil Knight was the leader with Bill Dunn second and Ron Seeley third. Paul
Norman and Nathan Short used the nest couple of laps to move into second and
third and Dunn fell to fourth and Seeley to seventh. Dana Wellington suffered a
flat on lap five slowing the race once more. Lanphere spun and the yellow
appeared on lap six. The top five were all in row at the half way point as Phil
Knight led by three car lengths. The green stayed out until lap ten when Dennis
Lunger spun in turn four. Louis DeDionisio passed Mike Knight for the fourth
spot on lap twelve. The last two laps were run without incident giving Phi
Knight his first win of the season. Norman remained in the second spot with
Short third.
The yellow appeared right after the green on the initial start of Budweiser
Super Sportsman event as Bob Van Arsdale made hard contact with Chad Carlson
which broke Van Arsdale’s steering. Bryan Ester led the first lap then lost
the handle coming out of four on lap two. Mike Murray was the new leader for the
restart. Murray and John Boardman tangled on the backstretch after the restart
collecting Bobby Rohrer, Jim Leonard and Tim Nocero. Mike Corrigan and Pete
Volpe were the leaders for the restart. Volpe jumped into the lead with Dan
Nocero second and Pat McGuire third. Chad Carlson and Don McGuire completed the
top five. After several attempts Pat McGuire finally go by Nocero for the second
spot on lap nine. Double spins by Corrigan and Scott Kuschel brought out the
caution with eleven laps completed. Spanky Hall waived off the restart then
Volpe’s car stalled during the yellow and Pat McGuire, who then became the new
leader, pushed him into the pits. McGuire hung on for his third win of the
season.
John Lacki and Dale Applebee raced side by side for the lead on lap one
of the E-Mod feature with Lacki leading by fender at the end of lap one. Bill
Thomas hit the wall in turn one on lap two collecting Tom Hagberg and Quincy
Turner, bringing out the yellow. Jim Irwin and Brian Fardink spun on the restart
for the second yellow. Applebee took the top spot on the next restart with Lacki
second followed by Dan Nocero, Chris Sutton and Dave Hess Jr.. Nocero made
contact with the front stretch wall falling back to fifth with four laps to go.
Sutton turned Lacki around in turn two with one lap to go setting up a one lap
dash for the win between Applebee, Dave Hess Jr., Nocero and Mike Hess. Applebee
was up to the task holding off Hess for the win. It was Applebee’s third win
of the season.
Jay Seekings led every lap of the first Super Challenger feature to win his
second of the season. Ryan Scott started fourteenth but finished first in the
second Super Challenger feature for his third win.
