Briggs Wins Craiger Race Engines Super Late Model Championship Race at Eriez
Speedway
By Glenn Slocum
Erie, Pa: Craiger Race Engines sponsored the events at Eriez Speedway
featuring a 35 Lap $3000 to win Super Late Model Championship race.
Dave
Hess Sr. won the "I Challenge You" event over his son Dave Jr. They
exchanged the lead several times with Dave Hess Sr. in front by a bumper at the
finish. Twenty-one Super Late Models were on hand for the Championship race with
rookie Paul Briggs getting the top starting spot by winning the first
qualification event. Briggs was up to the challenge leading every lap and
surviving several mid race restarts to win his first Super Late Model Feature
event. Rick Thompson used his off the pole starting spot to win his first
feature of the season in the Spectator division. Mike Knight won his second of
the season in a caution strewn Outlaw Cadet feature. Dan Osborne continued to
dominate the Four Cylinders notching his eighth win of the season. Chad Carlson
passed early leader John Volpe to win his second Budweiser Super Sportsman
event. Mike Hess lost the lead to Mike Boyd early in the E-Mod feature then
regained the spot on lap ten for his second win of the season. Chris Withers won
the Super Challenger feature.
The young
guns, rookie Paul Briggs and Bump Hedman were on the front row for the Craiger
Race Engines Super Late Model Championship 35 lap event. Briggs led first lap
with Hedman second followed by Kevin Santee, Scott Gurdak and Merle Terry. Chris
Hackett was sixth with Rich Gardner seventh and Andy Kania eighth. Kania tangled
with Gardner on lap seven losing several spots and Gurdak moved by Santee for
third. Hackett followed Gurdak one lap later chasing Gurdak. Briggs started
encountering lap traffic on lap twelve with a half a straight lead over Hedman.
Gardner was in the fifth spot sending Santee to sixth. Briggs continued to put
cars down a lap as the race stayed green through the first twenty laps. Merle
Terry lost the handle in turn three with twenty-one of the thirty-five laps
complete for the first yellow. The field closed with Briggs for the restart with
one lap car between the leader and the second place car of Hedman. Gurdak was on
Hedman’s bumper followed closely by Hackett and Gardner and Dave Hess Jr.
Briggs managed to move away from the field on the restart as the rest of the
leaders struggled to get by the lap cars. Ward Schell and Wendell Pinckney
became hooked together spinning to a stop on the front straight for the second
yellow with twenty-three complete. The top six remained the same with Doug Eck
seventh and Dick Barton eighth. Barton moved by Eck on the restart but the
caution flew for Andy Boozel who had spun into the infield coming out of turn
four. Hess beat Gardner to turn one on the restart for the fifth spot. Wendell
Pinckney and Boozel brought out the yellow with nine laps remaining. Gardner
regained his spot on the restart ant the yellow flew for Bruce Hordusky and Don
Jackson in turn three. Hess made a bold move on the restart tagging the wall on
the front stretch by getting by both Gardner and Hackett. Kevin Santee stopped
on the speedway for the next yellow on lap thirty. Hess was now in fourth while
Briggs, Hedman and Gurdak remained the first three. Briggs controlled the
restart once more and had built ten-car length advantage at the finish. Gardner
used the last lap to wrest the fourth spot from Hess as Gurdak was third and
Hedman second.
Bob
Kinne, Fred McClanahan were on the front row for the Spectator feature with Rick
Thompson and Walt Johnson in row two. McClanahan led the first lap with Rick
Thompson second and Kinne third. Mark Thompson and Bill Van Volkenburg both got
by Kinne for third and McClanahan slowed placing Thompson in the number one spot
on lap three. Jeff Harvey spun to a stop in between turns one and two bringing
out the caution for the first time on lap four. Rick Thompson remained in the
lead after the restart with Van Volkenburg second and Mark Thompson third. One
lap later Jason Stetson and Harvey had problems in turn four for the second
yellow. Tom Norland moved into third after Mark Thompson slowed leaving the
speedway. Harvey could not make the turn into the pits stopping on the speedway
for the third caution with seven laps completed. Rick Thompson led two more laps
before the yellow flew for a spun Rush Firestone in turn three. Norland was
second with Van Volkenburg third, Mark Thompson fourth and Brian Crandall fifth.
The yellow followed the green as Ken Lamp had spun turn one. Thompson managed to
pull out in front by several car lengths as the battle waged for second between
Norland, Van Volkenburg and Wade Slaney. Slaney managed to grab second on the
last laps as Rick Thompson took his first checkers of the season.
Scott Lewis led the first lap of Outlaw Cadet feature with Dennis Lunger second
and Dana Wellington third. Phil Knight last night’s winner at Stateline
Speedway was fourth. Lewis had problems getting through turn one on lap three
collecting Nathan Short and Wellington for the first yellow. Lunger became the
new leader with Phil Knight second followed by Mike Knight and Joe Weber. Mike
Knight was second by the time the field reached turn two then moved up and
around Lunger one lap later to take over the lead. Andy Knight was fourth by lap
five then got by his father two laps later for third. Brian Zimmerly spun
collecting Cliff Lanphere and Lewis for the second yellow. Wellington stopped as
the green fell for the restart forcing the third yellow. Andy Knight and Phil
Knight brought out the fourth yellow on the restart collecting half the field.
Wellington slowed once more on the restart for another caution. Alex Fiesler and
Brian Zimmerly tangled on the backstretch with three laps remaining. Andy Knight
nearly spun and Short pushed him around causing the next caution. Mike Knight
ran the last two laps under the green and unchallenged to win his second of the
season with Lunger second and Louis DeDionisio third.
J.R. Cross led the early laps of the Four Cylinder feature with Doug Kirik
second. Cross slipped a little bit in turn two on lap nine letting Kirik and Dan
Osborne by. Osborne quickly got by Kirik and led the final lap to win his eighth
feature of the season.
John
Volpe passed Eric Ester on the first lap of the Budweiser Super Sportsman class
to lead the event. Chad Carlson and Mike Murray were second and third as Ester
fell to fourth. Don McGuire and Bobby Rohrer passed Ester on lap six for fourth
and fifth. Brian Collins and Ester brought out the yellow with eight laps
complete. Carlson was first for the restart with Volpe second and Don McGuire
third. No one could mount a challenge as Carlson cruised to the win. Volpe held
on for second narrowly leading Don McGuire at the line.
Mike
Hess, Mike Boyd and Chris Sutton were the early leaders in the E-Mod feature. A
lap three caution was thrown for K.C. Decker who was leaking fuel on the
speedway. Dustin Eckman was fourth with Dale Applebee fifth and Justin Carlson
sixth. Dave Will spun collecting Dave Surrena, Bill Taylor, Shawn McArdle, Brian
Fardink and Troy Carr. Mike Boyd was scored as the leader of lap three by a
nose. Mike Hess fell into second with Applebee, Carlson, Sutton, Bill Thomas and
Dave Hess Jr. trailing. Mike Hess switched lanes and used the outside to regain
the top spot on lap ten. With two laps remaining Mike Hess had a five car length
advantage over Boyd and Applebee. Mike Hess won going away for his second visit
to Eriez victory lane in 2004.
Chris
Withers led every lap of the Super Challenger event for his second win of the
season.
