July 17th, 2004 - Scott Gurdak Wins on McDonalds Night at
Stateline Speedway
By Glenn Slocum
Busti, NY: Rain was the problem on McDonalds Night at Stateline Speedway.
A persistent rain started during the qualification events and necessitated a
forty-five minute delay while the track was run in. The rain continued off and
on during the remainder of the night. Bill Van Volkenburg notched his second
feature win in the Spectator class.
Bill Lindenburger won the "I Challenge
You" event over Robbie Morrell who had an altercation with the turn one
wall on the white flag lap. Andy Knight won his third of the season in the
Outlaw Cadet feature. Bobby Rohrer won the Budweiser Super Sportsman King of the
Hill qualification to start on the pole in their feature event and led every lap
to win his fifth of the season. Scott Gurdak ran unchallenged in the Super Late
Model event to get his second win of the season. Dave Hess Jr. won his third
E-Mod feature after taking the lead from Dustin Eckman on a lap four restart.
Jermin Strickland and Casey Swabik were the Super Challenger winners.
During the first lap of the Super Late Model event Jason Morell make hard
contact with the turn three wall after making earlier contact with Bump Hedman.
Scott Gurdak came out on top on the second start followed by Andy Boozel, Rich
Gardner, Wendell Pinckney and Steve Halpainy. The cars were in single file with
five complete as Gurdak led Boozel by five car lengths. Boozel and Gardner were
hotly contesting the second spot as Gurdak continued to build his lead. Gardner
would move under Boozel coming out of the turns and Boozel would pull away on
the straights. Halpainy tangled with the sixth place car of Paul Briggs bringing
out the second caution with sixteen laps complete. Briggs and Halpainy rejoined
at the rear of the field for the restart. Rod Maloy gained several spots on the
restart to take the fifth spot. Kevin Weise spun two laps later for the third
caution. Gurdak continued to control the event but Gardner had finally got by
Boozel for the second spot. Gardner chased Gurdak for the remainder of the event
but Gurdak never faltered winning his second of the year. Boozel was third with
Pinckney fourth and Maloy fifth.
Bill Van Volkenburg led the first lap in the Spectator feature. The yellow
came out on lap two with Rodney Thom in turn one wall. Wade Watson was second
with Nate Lester third. Kevin Brumett never made the restart for the second
yellow on lap two. Van Volkenburg remained the leader after the restart with
Nate Lester second and Lester Shoff third. The leaders were into lap traffic on
lap four as several cars were having difficulty navigating the slick track.
Shoff passed Lester in traffic and closed on Van Volkenburg with four laps
remaining. Lap traffic trapped the leader letting Shoff by on the white flag but
the same thing happened in reverse as Shoff was blocked by slower traffic giving
the lead back to Van Volkenburg. Nate Lester also passed Shoff as the checkers
flew for the runner up spot. It was the second win of the season for Van
Volkenburg.
Cliff Lanphere, Dennis Lunger and Ron Seeley were the early leaders in the
Outlaw Cadet feature. The caution flew for Mike Knight who officials thought was
leaking fuel. Lunger was the leader when the green was displayed again but one
lap latter Nathan Short spun collecting Phil Knight and Mark Hall. Lunger stayed
on top after the restart with Lanphere second and Andy Knight third. Seeley was
fourth with Mike Knight fifth. Lunger had a ten-car length advantage at the
cross flags and Andy Knight passed Lanphere for the second spot. Debris on the
speedway brought out the caution with nine of the fifteen laps complete. Andy
Knight beat Lunger to turn three to take the lead. Two laps later Scott Lewis
spun in turn one collecting Phil Knight for the fourth caution. Andy Knight
resumed control on the restart then three laps later won the event by several
car lengths over Lunger.
Bobby Rohrer, Aaron Robinson and Pat McGuire were the top three at the
start of the Budweiser Super Sportsman feature. Chad Carlson was fourth with Bob
Van Arsdale fifth and Pete Volpe sixth. The race ran green to checkers giving
Rohrer his fifth win of the season.
Dustin Eckman managed to break away from the field on the start of the E-Mod
feature. Justin Carlson was near the front early then slowed losing several
positions just before Jim Irwin broke his rear suspension bringing out the
yellow with three complete. Eckman was the leader on the restart with Tom
Hagberg second followed by Tommy Fox, Dave Hess Jr. and Dale Applebee. Eckman
lost two spots on the restart with Dave Hess Jr. coming out on top followed by
Hagberg. Eckman lost another spot to Dale Applebee and Carlson fought back to
the fifth spot. Applebee moved under Hagberg with nine laps complete as Dave
Hess lead by several car lengths. Applebee lost a drive shaft at the start
finish line and was forced to retire. Eckman was third with Carlson fourth and
Fox fifth. Mike Hess moved into the top five with three to go sending Fox back
to sixth. Carlson and Mike Hess both passed Eckman for third and fourth on the
white flag lap. Dave Hess took the checkers for the third time and Hagberg was
runner up.

Casey Swabik won his second feature of the season in the first Super
Challenger event and Jermin Strickland won his first in the second feature.
