24th, 2004 - Dale Applebee Wins E-Mod Championship Race and Paul Briggs Wins
Super Late Model Feature Sponsored by Ed Shults of Warren at Stateline Speedway
By Glenn Slocum
Busti, NY: A beautiful summer evening brought out the fans and racers for
the Ed Shults of Warren sponsored events at Stateline Speedway. The E-Mods were
featured with a Championship Race and twenty-five cars were on hand to contend
for the extra money. Bill Thomas, Dale Applebee and Dave Hess Jr. won the
qualifying events. Dale Applebee celebrated his birthday by winning the E-Mod
Championship race after following early leader Bill Thomas for all but the final
two laps. Paul Briggs started seventh but finished first in the Super Late Model
feature and made his first visit to victory lane at Stateline Speedway. Nate
Lester won his first Spectator feature of the season from his twenty-fifth
starting spot as only ten of the original thirty-two starters finished the
event. Mark Hall made it win number three in the Outlaw Cadets. Bob Hazzard won
his first Budweiser Super Sportsman feature leading from the initial green. Kirk
Foust and Jermin Strickland were the Super Challenger winners.
Bill Thomas and Dale Applebee were on the front row for the E-Mod
Championship race. Thomas jumped out to the early lead with Applebee falling in
behind and Dave Hess Jr. third. Chad Ruhlman was fourth by lap four with Chris
Sutton fifth and Mike Boyd sixth. Chad Silleman brought out the caution with
five laps complete. The top four began to move away from the rest of the field
after the restart. Ruhlman used the inside to pass Dave Hess for the third spot
on lap eight and the yellow flew for Dan Nocero with nine complete. Ruhlman was
throwing every thing at Applebee for the second spot. Jim Irwin spun to stop
going into turn three with fourteen laps compete. Dave Hess spun around on the
restart collecting Sutton, Mike Hess and Tom Hagberg. Thomas remained the leader
followed by Applebee, Ruhlman, Russell Dunn and Tommy Fox. The top three broke
away form the pack and Fox challenged Dunn for fourth. Fox made the pass on lap
seventeen. Thomas moved into lap traffic on lap nineteen with Applebee a car
length behind. Applebee saw the two to go signal and made his move passing
Thomas and leading the last two laps for the win his fourth of the season.
Dave Hess Jr. and Scott Gurdak were first and second after the first lap of
the Super Late Model event. Jason Morrell spun while running third with two laps
complete. Chris Hackett was third for the restart with Bump Hedman fourth and
Paul Briggs fifth. Gurdak passed Hess on the outside coming out of turn four on
lap three for the lead. John Lobb, Jason Morrell, Mike Coyle, Wally Fox and Ted
Kosinski were all involved in an accident going into turn four before the fourth
lap was complete. Gurdak, Hess, Briggs, Hedman and Hackett were the top five for
the restart. Scott Johnson was sixth followed by Dick Barton and Dan Armbruster.
Briggs was the big winner on the restart moving into the second spot as Hess
slid high in turn four. The yellow flew for Coyle who had stopped in turn four.
Hess was third for the restart with Hackett fourth followed by Hedman, Johnson
and Barton. Briggs took the lead from Gurdak when the green fell. Barton got out
of shape in turn two collecting Armbruster, Coyle, Wendell Pinckney and Kevin
Weise. Briggs was placed back into the second spot for the restart leaving
Gurdak on the pole. Hess remained in third with Hackett fourth and Hedman fifth.
Briggs repeated his earlier feat passing Gurdak on the restart. Briggs pulled
away form the field and Hackett and Hess battled for the third spot. Rich
Gardner was sixth by lap ten and Briggs entered lap traffic. Chad Valone spun
between turns three and four allowing the field to close with Briggs. The top
five were Briggs, Gurdak, Hackett, Hess and Johnson. Gardner was sixth followed
by Hedman, Barton, Eck and Bruce Hordusky. Gardner, Hess and Johnson made it
three wide on the restart with Hess holding on to the spot. Hedman struck the
wall on the front stretch with fourteen complete. Gardner used the restart to
move into the fourth spot as Johnson was fifth and Hess slipped to sixth. Two
laps later Ted Kosinski spun bringing out the yellow once more. Briggs had no
problem building a ten car length lead. The field became strung out completely
around the speedway and no one had any thing for Briggs. Briggs caught the rear
of the field again on the white flag lap but was not slowed winning his first
feature at Stateline.
Kevin
Brumett and Rodney Thoms brought out the Spectator feature event. Pat Landy and
Bob Kinne were in row two. Brumett did not fire at the drop of the green causing
a mad scramble as the rest of the pack tried to evade and the yellow flew
necessitating a complete restart. The second restart failed as Mike Coast lost a
wheel sending Chris Couchenour into the fence on the backstretch and bringing
out the second yellow before a lap was counted. Thoms led the first lap then
Skip Joslin lost a wheel in turn two collecting Couchenour and Brian Crandall
for caution number three. Brumett led lap two with Rick Thompson from his
eleventh starting spot in second. The yellow flew again during lap four as
Jeremiah Arnold and Wade Watson spun in turn two. Steve Keith moved by Thompson
for the runner up spot on lap three then incidents at both ends of the speedway
brought out the caution with four laps complete. Thompson regained second on the
restart with Lester Shoff on his rear bumper. Jason Schoonmaker brought out the
caution again with six laps complete. Shoff retired during the caution placing
Keith third. Keith and Couchenour tangled forcing Couchenour to stop in the
infield bringing out the yellow. Thompson made it to the front on the restart as
Brumett slipped to second then one lap later to third with Keith in the second
spot. Brumett spun one lap later but the race stayed green. David McClanahan
spun into the infield with two laps remaining. The leaders tangled on the
restart collecting several cars and forcing Mark Luce to exit from the speedway
behind a wrecker. Thompson made a quick stop in the pits with a flat and Keith
took control followed by Nate Lester and Brian Crandall. Lester passed Keith on
the white flag lap and held on for the win.
Mark
Hall and Scott Lewis were on the front row for the Outlaw Cadet feature. Hall
took control leading lap one then an incident involving Phil Knight, Alex
Fiesler and Dana Wellington brought out the caution before lap two was complete.
Hall had a ten-car length advantage when a lap four spin by Kevin Cline brought
out the second yellow. Jamie Erhard was in the second spot for the restart with
Louis DeDionisio third and Scott Lewis fourth. Erhard used the low groove to
pass Hall on the restart lap but one lap later Nathan Short was spun into the
infield for the third caution. Hall fought his way back to the front and Erhard
went to second on the restart. Lewis spun with ten complete collecting Mike
Knight. Mike Moore made it into the top three as Spanky Hall signaled two to go
then Fiesler spun in turn four setting up a two lap dash for the win. Hall
stayed in front for his third win and Erhard barely held off Moore for second.
Bob
Hazzard led the first lap of the Budweiser Super Sportsman feature then a spin
by Bryan Ester brought out the yellow. Mike Murray was second and Pete Volpe
third. Volpe took second from Murray on lap four and started to run down
Hazzard. Bob Van Arsdale brought out the caution with six complete allowing
Volpe to close with Hazzard. Murray was third with John Boardman fourth. Bobby
Rohrer took third from Murray on the restart as Volpe chased Hazzard. Jake Eller
brought out the caution with twelve laps complete. Boardman got sideways on the
restart collecting Chad Carlson. Debris made the yellow immediately follow the
green on the restart. Hazzard ran the last two laps unchallenged with Volpe
second and Rohrer third.

Monty
Seekings Jr. rolled over several times on the second lap of the first Super
Challenger feature as Gary Fisher led. Kirk Foust passed Fisher for the lead on
lap two and led the remainder of the event for his second win. Jermin Strickland
led most of the laps in the second Challenger feature also for his second win.
