June 13th, 2004 - Rich Gardner Wins Super Late Model Feature at Eriez
Speedway
By Glenn Slocum
Erie, Pa: The forecasted rain did not appear as Sponsor’s Night at
Eriez Speedway was held under blue skies. Last weeks Super Late Model feature
winner Scott Gurdak had mechanical problems in the qualifying heat and managed
to get to the sixth spot in the feature when mechanical problems struck again.
Mark Ramsey won his first heat at Eriez and led the Super Late Model event for
the first two laps the left the door open for veteran Rich Gardner who won going
away. Lester Shoff won the Spectator feature from his fourth starting spot. Dan
Osborne won his fifth feature of the season in the Four Cylinder class. Don
McGuire won his second Budweiser Super Sportsman event. Mike Hess won his first
in the E-Mod division. Ryan Scott won his third Super Challenger feature.
Mark Ramsey and Rich Gardner were on the front row of the Super Late Model
feature with Rod Maloy and Andy Boozel in row two. Chris Hackett and Bump Hedman
made up row three. Ramsey held the first spot through lap two but slid up the
speedway on lap three giving Gardner the opening he needed. Ramsey lost two more
spots one lap later as Maloy took second and Hackett third. Andy Boozel sent
Ramsey back one more on lap five as Gardner began to build his lead over Maloy.
Hackett pushed Maloy hard over the next five laps but could not make the pass.
Doug Eck made his appearance in the top five with twelve to go and the caution
flew for Hedman who had stopped in turn three. Merle Terry was sixth and Andy
Kania seventh. Gardner ran away from the field on the restart then two laps
later Scott Gurdak and Merle Terry made contact sending Terry into the fence on
the backstretch and collecting John Venable who was subbing for John Lobb. Terry
continued but Venable required the wrecker. Hackett used the restart lap to pass
Maloy for the second spot and Gurdak moved up to challenge Eck for fifth. With
five to go Gardner was out in front by ten car lengths and Hackett has the same
advantage over Maloy in third. Gurdak broke with two to go but the race stayed
green with Gardner getting his second win of the season. Hackett was second
followed by Maloy, Boozel and Eck.
Lester
Shoff, Barrett Brown and Mark Thompson were the early leaders in the Spectator
feature. Thompson challenged Shoff on lap three then lost the handle falling to
last. Rush Firestone took over the third spot as Brown chased Shoff. Jason
Stetson brought out the first caution with six laps completed. Shoff pulled out
to a two car length lead and Firestone captured second from Brown. Thompson had
more troubles on lap nine with a spin and heavy contact on the front stretch
wall. Thompson was okay but required the wrecker to return to the pits. Tom
Norland moved from fourth to second on the restart as he and Shoff pulled away
from the field. Shoff held on for the win and Brown made a last lap pass for
third.
Doug Kirik was the early leader of the Four Cylinder event. Dan Osborne made a
lap three pass to take the spot. Osborne led the remainder event. Tom Bean
finished third.
Fifteen
Outlaw Cadets reported to the speedway for their main event. Dennis Lunger led
the first lap. Brian Campbell spun near the front of the field collecting
several cars including Ron Seeley, Nathan Short and Billy Dunn. Lunger took the
green on the restart but lost the lead on the backstretch to Andy Knight then
the yellow appeared one more. Phil Knight moved into the second spot on lap four
and Mike Knight was testing Lunger on the low side for third. Mike Knight took
third two laps later. Paul Norman stopped on lap thirteen bringing out the third
caution and setting up a two-lap dash for the win between the Knight family.
Andy Knight held the spot over the final laps with Phil Knight second and Mike
Knight third after holding off a last lap charge by Louis DeDionisio.
Eric
Ester led the first lap of the Budweiser Super Sportsman event then went in to
turn one too hard on the second lap and did a slow spin in front of the field.
Everyone managed to dodge Ester and the green stayed out. Two laps later the
yellow did appear for a stalled Pete Volpe. Hank Francis, Randy Parmenter and
Don McGuire were the early leaders. Chad Carlson and Aaron Robinson were fourth
and fifth with Mike Murray sixth. Don McGuire moved up to challenge for the lead
on lap ten as the leaders began to encounter lap traffic. McGuire made the pass
as the two to go signal was given. McGuire won with a three-car length advantage
over Francis.
Bill
Thomas used his outside front row starting spot to lead the first lap then
contact with Mike Hess sent Thomas into the turn three fence for the first
yellow. Hess led lap two the Holly Nelson stopped with a flat for caution number
two. Mike Boyd led the next lap with Hess second and Dale Applebee third. Boyd
slipped in turn two on lap five giving the lead back to Hess. K.C. Decker was
fourth and Dustin Eckman fifth. Hess had a ten-car length lead by the half
waypoint as the field was strung out completely around the speedway. The top
five remained the same for the rest of the event giving Mike Hess his first win
of the season at Eriez.
Len
Strange did a complete roll in front of the grandstand on lap two of the Super
Challenger feature. Mike Kruszewski led the first four laps giving way to Ryan
Scott, Glenn Slaney and Wade Slaney. Scott ran the remainder of the event
unchallenged for his third win.
