June
27th, 2004 - Rod Maloy Wins Jay’s Auto Wrecking Super Late Model Feature at
Eriez Speedway
By Glenn Slocum
Erie, Pa: Jay’s Auto Wrecking sponsored the events at Eriez Speedway
featuring a King of the Hill single elimination qualification format that saw
Rod Maloy best the field to pocket the $1,000 prize and start on the pole for
the feature event. Maloy was up to the challenge and survived several cautions
to beat Rich Gardner to the finish by a fender. Dave Tackett won the Spectator
feature, which saw several lead changes and a red flag for Rush Firestone who
flipped on the backstretch and caught on fire. Alex Fiesler led every lap of the
Outlaw Cadet event to win his first feature event. Dan Osborne won his seventh
feature in the Four Cylinder division. Bobby Rohrer made his first winner circle
appearance as the Budweiser Super Sportsman winner. Chris Withers and Glenn
Slaney won the Super Challenger features.
Rod Maloy led the flag bearing Super Late Models to the Speedway for tier
parade lap. Maloy jumped to the lead with Paul Briggs second, Rich Gardner third
and Merle Terry fourth. Doug Eck passed Terry for fourth just as the yellow
appeared for Matt Lanphere who had spun in turn two. Merle Terry spun in front
of the field coming out of turn four on lap five and all the racers were able to
avoid him but the yellow appeared for the second time. Scott Gurdak had advanced
from eighteenth to ninth for the lap five restart. Eck tried Gardner on the
restart but could not make the pass as Maloy led Gardner by two car lengths.
Bump Hedman slowed to a stop high in turn four on lap seven bringing out the
yellow. Rick Isadore was fourth for the restart with Andy Boozel fifth and Andy
Kania sixth. Scott Gurdak got sideways on lap nine collecting Wendell Pinckney,
Moose Dunnewold and Ward Schell. Gurdak continued losing several spots but the
rest stopped on the speedway bringing out the caution. Maloy was still the
leader followed by Gardner, Eck, Boozel, Isadore and Kania. Kevin Weise tagged
the wall on the restart then slowed to a stop before a lap was complete. Kania
went wide on lap ten losing his sixth spot Dave Hess Jr. Maloy and Gardner broke
away from the file with Eck and Boozel fighting for the third spot. Boozel and
Eck ran several laps side by side with Eck high and Boozel low. Kevin Santee
brought out the caution with nineteen laps complete allowing the field to close
with Gardner and Maloy. Boozel was placed third with Eck fourth and Hess fifth.
Gurdak spun into the infield on lap twenty and Spanky Hall admonished Terry
during the ensuing caution. Gurdak was towed from the Speedway and Terry was
placed at the end of the field. Maloy controlled the restart and Chris Hackett
began to move in on the top five. Gardner made a last lap charge but came up a
fender short as Maloy won his first of the season.
Joe
Heslop and Chris Couchenour led the Spectators to the Speedway for their feature
event. Couchenour led the first lap but an incident in turn two involving
several cars saw Wade Watson spin to a stop bringing out the yellow. Couchenour
was the leader on the restart with Bill Van Volkenburg second and Mark Thompson
third. Couchenour was lapping cars by lap five. The yellow appeared on lap six
for Jim Van Cise, who had slowed on the back straight. Rush Firestone spun on
the restart for the third yellow. Lester Shoff tapped Mark Thompson on lap six
spinning Thompson into the infield but the green stayed out as Couchenour and
Van Volkenburg began to distance themselves from the field. Couchenour lost
control then ran into Van Volkenburg, both cars suffered flats, and debris on
the speedway brought out the caution. Shoff was the new leader with Matt
Lozowski second and Dave Tackett third right behind the lap car of Thompson.
Shoff and Lozowski both went in too hard on the white flag lap nearly spinning
allowing Tackett into the lead but Rush Firestone rolled on the backstretch and
caught on fire. Firestone quickly exited his upside down car. One lap remained
when the track was finally cleared for racing with Tackett on the pole and Brian
Crandall in fourth on the grid but second in the race. Tackett beat everyone to
turn one and ran the lap unchallenged for his second win of the season.
Alex
Fiesler and Cliff Lanphere were first and second after lap one of the Outlaw
Cadet feature. Brian Zimmerly moved by Lanphere on lap three for the second spot
while Bill Dunn ran fourth. Ron Seeley challenged then passed Dunn on lap four
for fourth and one lap later the yellow came out for Louis DeDionisio who had
spun in turn one. Seeley used the low groove to get by Lanphere on the restart
and Nathan Short did the same one lap later sending Lanphere to fifth. John
Cline made his appearance in the top five on lap eight. Fiesler was into lap
traffic on lap twelve with Zimmerly close behind. Zimmerly was not able to move
up alongside Fiesler who won his first Outlaw Cadet feature.
Larry
Taylor brought out the caution on lap four of the Four Cylinder feature as Brian
Duryee led. Dan Osborne passed Tom Bean for second on lap six. Doug Kirik
brought out the yellow on lap eight with a spin in turn four. Osborne beat
Duryee to turn one on the restart then simply drove away from the field for his
seventh win of the year.
Brian
Collins jumped into the early lead of the Budweiser Super Sportsman feature with
Aaron Robinson second and Chad Carlson third but lost the handle on lap six
bringing out the yellow and placing Robinson in first. Carlson had troubles on
the restart pulling into the pits placing Bobby Rohrer into second with Don
McGuire third and Randy Parmenter fourth. Rohrer caught Robinson on lap twelve
and made the pass for the lead. Don McGuire passed Robinson one lap later but
could not catch Rohrer. It was Rohrer’s first win of the season.
Mike
Boyd and Dave Hess Jr. brought eighteen E-Mods out for their feature event. Boyd
was the first across the line the lost the lead to Dave Hess on the backstretch.
Brad Pease brought out the caution on lap two with a fuel leak. After
adjustments to Pease’s car the race was restarted. Mike Hess moved alongside
Boyd on the restart but could not make the pass. Dale Applebee was fourth and
Justin Carlson fifth. Carlson took fourth from Applebee one lap latter. Dave
Hess had a ten car length lead over Mike Hess at the half way point and the
field was strung out single file completely around the speedway. Applebee used a
lap car to pass Carlson for the fourth spot on lap thirteen as Spanky Hall
displayed the two to go sign. Dave Hess took the checkers for the fourth time in
2004 with Mike Hess second and Boyd third.

Chris
Withers won the first Super Challenger race with Wade Slaney second and Bob
Belson third. Glenn Slaney won the second Challenger feature with Steve Soto
second and Casey Swabik third.
