At Stateline Speedway
By Glenn Slocum
Busti, NY: Clear blue skies and sunshine greeted fans at the Sysco Food
Services sponsored events at Stateline Speedway. Nate Lester took control of the
Sysco Food Services Spectator Championship Race after early leaders Brian Graham
and Rick Thompson spun for his second win of the season. Doug Eck grabbed the
Super Late Model Budweiser King of the Hill title from Rich Gardner. John
Boardman took the lead on a lap four restart of the Budweiser Super Challenger
feature getting his first win of the season. Dave Tackett lost then regained the
lead on the final two laps of the Outlaw Cadet feature winning his first ever
feature event. Mike Hess used his pole starting position to great advantage
leading every lap to win his first E-Mod feature event of the year. Dick Barton
led every lap of the Super Late Model feature getting his second win of the
season. Barton has sixty four wins at Stateline Speedway and is just one shy of
two hundred career wins. Amber Belson won the Lady Challenger feature. Alex
Froman won his second Super Challenger feature and Aron Dascomb grabbed the lead
with one to go to win his fourth Super Challenger feature.
Sophomore Paul Briggs sat alongside veteran Dick Barton in the front row of
the Super Late Model feature. Dave Lyon, Bump Hedman, Andy Boozel and John Lobb
made up the next two rows. Moose Dunnewold lost a wheel on the warm-up lap and
Dave Hess Jr. stopped up against the fence on the restart for the first yellow
before any laps were completed. The next start was waived off by Matthews.
Barton controlled the next start with Briggs second. Chad Valone lost the handle
in turn three on lap three for the second yellow. Rich Gardner brought out the
caution with seven laps compete. Twenty-four cars remained for the restart with
Barton, Briggs, John Lobb, Lyon and Scott Johnson the top five. With ten
complete Barton was out in front by five car lengths and Briggs led John Lobb by
three with Matt Urban fourth and Lyon fifth. At the halfway point Barton had
extended his lead to ten car lengths and Lobb had caught Briggs to contest the
second position. Lobb ran inside of Briggs for several laps but could not make
the pass as Barton continued to build his lead. Lobb began to fall back losing
third to Matt Urban just before Barton took the two to go signal. Barton had
just caught lap traffic when the checkered flew for his second win of the season
and his sixty-fourth feature win at Stateline and his one-hundred and fifth on
the circuit.
Rick Karash and Mark Luce we on the front row of the twenty-eight car field
for the Sysco Food Service Spectator Championship Race. Walt Johnson and Chris
McDonald made up row two with Travis Swabik and Brian Graham in row three.
Graham led lap one getting a huge jump on the rest of the field. Rick Thompson
emerged in the second spot on lap three with Clarence Dickerson third and Jason
Genco fourth. Genco passed Dickerson for third on lap five as Graham led
Thompson by half a straight away. John Kelsey brought out the yellow with six
laps completed. The top five for the lap seven restart were Graham, Thompson,
Genco, Dickerson and Swabik. Lester Shoff made a brief appearance in sixth on
lap seven then retired to the infield. Josh Lucas brought out the second yellow
just before the half way mark. Graham, Thompson, Genco, Dickerson and Nate
Lester were the restart leaders. Graham led the next lap then Bill Reeves and
John Britt tangled for the third yellow. Lester was fourth with Swabik fifth for
the restart. Thompson pulled under Graham on the restart but could not make the
pass but one lap later Graham spun turning the lead over to Thompson who spun
two turns later giving Lester the lead. Graham spun again collecting Couchenour
for the fourth yellow with thirteen laps complete. Two laps later Couchenour
made hard contact with the first turn concrete for the fifth yellow. Seventeen
cars remained for the final five laps with Lester, Kelsey, Genco, Rodney Thoms
and Joe McMurdy the top five. Head starter Mark Matthews waive off the restart.
Lester ran the next three unchallenged but Kelsey slowed to a stop bringing out
the yellow. Thompson had fought back to the third spot for the restart behind
Thoms and Lester. Lester was in front by five car lengths for the white flag
with Thoms and Thompson fighting for second. Lester cruised home for his second
win of the season.
Pat McGuire, John Volpe and Chris Kuschel tangled on the initial start of the
Budweiser Super Sportsman feature. John Boardman and Bobby Rohrer were on front
row with Scott Kuschel and Bryan Ester in row two. Rohrer led the first three
then Ester spun in turn two collecting Volpe for the second yellow. Rohrer,
Boardman, Don McGuire and Scott Kuschel were the leaders for the restart.
Boardman grabbed the led for Rohrer on the restart with Don McGuire third. Bob
Hazzard moved into fourth as the yellow flew for Rich Digirolamo in turn four
with six laps complete. Boardman led at the midway point and Hazzard moved up to
challenge Don McGuire for third. Boardman won by three car lengths over Rohrer
with Don McGuire third.
Brian Crandall and Dave Tackett were first and second at the end of lap one.
A spin by Steve Moynihan brought out the yellow on lap two. Tackett came out on
top after the restart but the yellow flew one lap later for Dave Marrs in turn
three. Tackett survived the restart and Nathan Short took second. One more lap
was completed then the yellow appeared for Paul Norman and Phil Knight. Tackett,
Short, John Cline, Andy Knight and Ron Seeley were the top five for the restart.
Short and Tackett ran side by side for nearly tow laps before Tackett regained
control of the top spot. Andy Knight was third with Mike Moore fourth and Cline
fifth. Early leader Crandall lost the handle with twelve laps complete allowing
the field to close with Tackett and Short. Tackett led with two to go but Short
had a bumper on Tackett at the white flag. Tackett moved Short up the speedway
coming out of four on the final lap getting his first of the season.
Mike Hess and Dale Applebee were leading the first lap of the E-Mod feature
when Chris Sutton, Holly Nelson, Don Nocero and Jim Hilyer tangled on the back
stretch. Nelson was towed from the Track while the others joined at the rear of
the field. Hess led with Applebee second followed by Mike Munsee, Justin Carlson
and Dave Hess Jr. Chad Silleman had trouble in turn one for the second yellow
with four complete. Carlson and Dave Hess gained a spot on the restart and one
lap later Dave Hess captured third from Carlson. The yellow flew for Munsee in
turn four who collected Quincy Turner, Pat McGuire and Troy Carr. Applebee
slipped in turn two on lap eleven letting Dave Hess pass for the second spot.
Mike Hess led Dave Hess by three car lengths as the yellow flew and held on for
his first win of the season.
Tara Jordan did a barrel roll on the first lap of the Lady Spectator feature.
Jordan was okay but was forced to retire from the event. Amber Belson won with
Mary Hammond second and Jodee Jordan third.
Bob Belson led the first five laps of the first Super Challenger feature then
caught fire bringing out the caution. Alex Froman was the new leader with
Dominic DePonceau second. Froman easily won the event for his second feature
win.
Brad Strickland and Butch Camarata were the early leaders in the second Super
Challenger event. Camarata passed Strickland on lap six then the yellow flew one
