Saturday June 11th, 2011 Busti, NY: The clouds
gave way to blue skies just before race time at Stateline Speedway. The UEMS
E-Mods were on hand for the Quincy Turner Memorial with $1,500 to the winner.
Dave Hess Jr. led from the green for the win. Hess won the ULMS Lynn Seamens
Memorial last week. Rich Michael Jr. was second and Dan Davies third.
The Super Sportsman feature was won by Ben Burgess his third of the season
after Dave Stein took a wild ride over the turn four wall.
David Scott used the cushion like only a veteran could to win the Super Late
feature. Dutch Davies finished second after heavy completion from Dick Barton
who held the spot for most of the race, Greg Oakes who finished third and Chris
Hackett.
Dennis Lunger won the Crate Late feature from his front row starting spot and
Kyle Scott was second.
Dennis Asel won his second Spectator feature of the season in a green to
checkers run.
John Boardman won the E-Mod Non-Qualifiers event after Justine Carlson
driving Richie Langer’s car was disqualified.
Jimmy
Diabo won the Super Challenger feature his first of the year.
The
initial start of the Super Sportsman feature was delayed when Doug Francis and
45 tangled in turn one. Jake Eller led the first lap with Wade Watson second and
Ben Burgess Jr. third form his eleventh starting spot. Burgess’s charge gained
him the top spot on lap five. Watson challenged Eller at the 10 lap mark but
Burgess was all alone several car lengths ahead. Just as the leader was about to
take the checkers David Stein took a wild ride over the turn four wall landing
upside down between the catch fence and the concrete wall. The final lap was run
with Burgess getting his third win of the season.
Dave
Hess Jr. and Butch Southwell were on the front row for UEMS Quincy Turner
Memorial. Dan Davies and Brian Douglas were in row two and Rich Michael Jr. and
Mike Eschrich in row three. Hess led lap one with Davies second and Southwell
third. Scott Gurdak, Leonard Enos, Greg Johnson caused caution one with two laps
complete. Eschrich, Brent Rhebergen, Shane Crotty and Jack Young tangled for the
second yellow during the restart. Michael began testing Davies for the runner up
spot right after the restart running side by side until the third yellow flew
this time for Al Brewer stopped on the edge of the track with obvious mechanical
problems. Hess, Michael, Davies, Bug Watson and Douglas were the leaders. Just
must one more lap then Watson lost the handle collecting Randy Hall for the
fourth yellow. Just before the yellow Michael looked faster then the leader.
Eight of the twenty-five laps were complete. Hess was able to pull away from
Michael on the exit of the corners and lose ground on the entrance having just
enough advantage to continue building his lead. With 10 laps remaining Hess had
a half a straight lead over Michael with Davies 10 car lengths back in third.
With seven laps to go lap traffic became an issue for the leaders. A spinner in
the finial corner on the next to last lap brought out the yellow setting up a
two lap dash for the win. Hess was up to the challenge and Davies nipped Joel
Watson at the line for third and Michael was the runner up.
David
Scott and Dick Barton were on the front row for the Super Late event and Scott
bested Barton for the lead. Dutch Davies lost the handle collecting Chad Valone,
Bump Headman and Randy Lobb with two laps complete. Scott, Barton, Greg Oakes,
Doug Eck and Davies were the restart leaders. The first attempted restart was
waived off by starter Mark Matthews. Scott was out in front at the end lap three
then Hedman had more problems for yellow three. It was three wide at the exit of
turn two on the restart as Barton, Oakes and Chris Hackett were fighting for
second. Barton held on to the spot with Oakes settling into third. Barton stayed
up against the cushion and was able to hold off Oakes but not make any headway
towards Scott. Davies became a contender at the half way point challenging Oakes
for third. The race for second was now being contested by four race cars. Barton
like the leader was using the cushion to just hold on to second. With four laps
remaining Barton faded allowing Davies into second with Oakes third. Scott drove
a perfect race using the cushion like only a veteran could for his first win of
the season and his 15th career win to match his father, Jim, in wins.
At
the end of lap one Mike Moore and Jake Finnerty caused the first and yellow of
the Outlaw Cadet feature as Ryan Scott led. Steve Kania was second with Chad
Schauers third. Scott had the field covered negotiating a late race caution only
the second of the race for the win. Kania was second with Schauers third.
The
only two feature winners of the season were on the front row of the Crate Late
feature Dennis Lunger and John Lacki. A lap three spin
by Justin Kreider caused the first caution. Lunger, Lacki and Kyle Scott were
leading at the end of the first five laps. At the half way mark Lacki edged up
beside Lunger for the lead. Lacki faded two laps later as Scott moved up to
challenge him for second. Brian Haggerty lost a drive shaft on the front stretch
for the second caution with four laps remaining. Lunger was slow on the restart
and Scott tried the bottom for the lead but could not make in stick while Lacki
lost several spots allowing Bob Kish to finish third.
Dennis
Asel and Kyle Weilacher make up the front row for the Spectator feature and Asel
had the top spot at the end of lap two. Brian Crandall was slowing with
mechanical problems when Doug Harvey pushed him around for the first caution
with three laps complete. Four green flag laps were followed by a spin by Sam
Courson. The restart ended with Matt Sampson and Gary Fisher hooked together in
the exit of turn two. Jeremy Williams restarted in the second spot behind Asel
with Weilacher third. Steve Keith was the next to have problems with a spin on
lap eleven. The restart quickly ended when Lee Meyers and John Britt tangled in
turn two. At the two to go signal Asel led by several car lengths and Mike Moon
nipped Williams at the line for second.
Five
cars nearly blocked the speedway on the opening lap of the E-Mod Non-Qualifiers
feature. Ben Asel, Mike McGee, Ron Seeley, John Kelsey and Richie Langer were
the drivers involved. Shawn Shingledecker was on the pole for the complete
restart and led the first lap. Froman nearly spun forcing Burgess to spin for
the second yellow. The leader caused the next yellow with a spin in turn four on
lap three setting up E-Mod rookie John Boardman as the leader. Boardman led lap
three then another multi-car tangle brought out the yellow. Froman,
Shingledecker, Dan Sasso and Asel were involved. Boardman continued to lead with
Seeley and Kelsey fighting for second. Seeley finally bested Kelsey who nearly
spun losing several spots on lap eight. A spin by Burgess for yellow five
occurred with nine laps complete and the field was restarted single file. Langer
had made a remarkable recovery for earlier in the event to become the new leader
on lap eleven. McGee and Randy Raynor caused caution six with 12 laps down.
After contact with Boardman on the restart Langer went on to win the event. At
the end of the event it was discovered that Justin Carlson was driving the
Langer car. Carlson was disqualified for not notifying the officials of the
driver change and the win was given to Boardman.
