Model Feature at Stateline Speedway
By Glenn Slocum
Saturday May 21st, 2011 Busti, NY: Sunshine was a
welcome addition to the 2011 racing season at Stateline. Arthur R Gren /
Budweiser UEMS $1,000 to win event headlined the racing card. Forty-six E-Mods
checked into the pits trying to qualify for one of the 26 spots in the feature
event. The UEMS Non-Qualifiers race was won by Jaik Halpainy. Joel Watson took
over the UEMS main event after leader Kyle Innman spun then survived a late race
charge by Dave Hess Jr. for the win.
Garry Fisher came from 13th to win a caution filled
Spectator feature.
Dutch Davies notched his second Super Late Model career win over a charging
Dave Hess Jr.
Glen Slaney won the Outlaw Cadet feature after a heated battle with first
Steve Moynihan then Chad Carlson.
Ben Burgess Jr. made it two in row winning the Super Sportsman event.
John Lacki won the Crate Late feature.
Dustin Lamb won the first Super Challenger feature and Austin Karash won the
second.
Lee Meyers and Jason Covey were on the front row for the Spectator feature
which saw the yellow fly before most of the cars had crossed the start finish
line for the first time. Meyers was the first around with Covey second and Paul
Nelson third. A spin by Kyle Weilacher caused caution number two as the second
lap ended. Two more laps were complete when the third yellow flew as James Britt
was stopped facing the wrong direction high in turn three. Two laps later a six
car incident cause yellow number four. Meyers, Gary Fisher, Steve Keith Jr.,
Covey were the restart leaders. Yellow five followed with seven laps complete
followed immediately by yellow six, seven and eight on the next three restarts.
Fisher made his move on the lap eight as Meyers fell to third with Mike Moon up
to second from his 15th starting spot. Eleven laps were complete with
Nelson and last week winner Dennis Asel joining Fisher, Moon and Meyers in the
top five. Fisher won by three lengths with Moon second and Asel third.
Andy Boozel brought out the first caution in the Super Late Model feature.
Nathan Short and Doug Eck were on the front after contact in the first corner
Short held on to the lead then one lap later Dick Barton and Eck spun in unison
for caution two. They were running third an fourth and would now restart in the
rear of the nineteen car field. Barton’s pit crew called him into the pits
during the yellow but he returned to take the green. Short led Dutch Davies with
Chad Valone third. Davies passed Short on lap five to become the new leader.
Last week’s winner Ron Maloy was third, Valone fell to fourth and Dave Hess Jr.
fought with Darrell Bossard for fifth. With twelve of the 25 laps complete
Davies had a full straight away lead over Short. A slowing Andy Boozel caused
the third yellow allowing the field to close with Davies. Davies controlled the
restart. Hess was the only car advancing passing Valone on lap fifteen and Maloy
for third on lap eighteen. Short was the next to fall to Hess’s charge. Davies
had amassed a twenty car length lead that Hess struggled to close as the laps
wound down. A last lap spin by Valone did not cause a yellow as Davies beat Hess
to the line by several car lengths for his first win on the season and his
second at Stateline.
Steve Moynihan nipped Glen Slaney to lead the first lap of the Outlaw Cadet
feature. The first yellow appeared on lap three with a two car spin in turn two.
Moynihan and Slaney ran door to door for the next two green flag laps then Jake
Finnerty’s spin brought out the a lap five yellow flag. Slaney passed Moynihan
on the restart for the race lead. Chad Carlson became a contender on lap
thirteen passing Ryan Scott for third just before the third caution of the race.
Slaney, Moynihan, Carlson, Scott and Kelly Frederes were the leaders. Carlson
continued to advance passing Moynihan for the runner up spot on lap fifteen.
John Cline had problems on with seventeen complete for caution four. Carlson put
fender under Slaney and the two nearly spun between turns one and two with
Slaney able to recover but Moynihan helped Carlson around for caution five
sending Carlson to the rear of the field. Slaney ran the last few laps
unchallenged for his first of the season.
The UEMS Budweiser feature event was brought to the green by Kyle Innman and
Kyle Bedell. Inman led the first circuit with Joel Watson second. Several cars
tangled in turn two on lap two ending with Clayton Kennedy the only car stopped
on the speedway. Innman, Watson Bedell, Dave Lyon and Al Brewer were the top
five for the double file restart. The leader spun in turn two just after the
restart for caution number two. Watson was the new leader with Brewer second and
Bedell third. Lyon and Brewer caused caution thee slowing the event while the
wrecker crews untangled their cars. Watson, Bedell and Shane Crotty were the
leaders. Dan Davies and Butch Southwell completed the top five. With 8 laps
complete Lyon came to a stop between turns three and four with obvious problems
on the right front of his race car for caution four. Watson remained in charge
with Crotty and Bedell giving chase. Dave Hess Jr. was fourth with Davies fifth.
Mike Eschrich had problems with sixteen complete for yellow five. Leonard Enos
did not make it through turn one on the restart for yellow six. A four car wreck
on lap seventeen caused caution seven. Hess passed Bedell on lap twenty then
Crotty one lap later leaving three laps to run down Watson for the win. Hess
closed to within five car lengths of Watson but ran out of race ending his
charge giving the win to Watson.
Tom Hagberg was the early leader in the UEMS Non-Qualifier event. A spin by
Jordan John brought out caution number one on lap two followed quickly by
caution two on the restart. Jaik Halpainy passed Hagberg on lap four. A car
stopped near the pit entrance for caution three with six laps down. Dave Shagla
came for ninth to pass Hagberg for second on lap eight. The race remained green
until a spin by Kyle Bradigan cause caution four. Halpainy, Shagla, Chuck Frye
and Hagberg were the leaders. Halpainy finished the last three laps unchallenged
for his first E-Mod win.
The Super Sportsman features first lap ended with a three car incident
involving Jake Eller, Wade Watson and Scott Lawson. Allen Haskins was the leader
after the restart trailed by Joe Buccola Jr. in second. Buccola suffered
mechanical problems a pulled into the pits. Ben Burgess Jr. was the leader when
Mike stopped up against the front stretch fence and Orville Edward made hard
contact with the turn four concrete. Nine laps were complete. Burgess made it
two in row with the win.
Darren Peters used his pole starting spot to take the early lead in the Crate
Late Model feature event. John Lacki was second with Ed Carley third, Kyle Scott
fourth and last week’s winner Dennis Lunger fifth. Todd Sweet spun in front of
the race leaders for the first caution. Lacki Peters and Carley were three wide
for lead on lap eleven with Lacki coming out on top. Peters lost another spot a
couple of laps later to Carley. A Robert Dorman spin brought out the second
caution with fourteen laps complete. Lacki did not fire on the restart causing
the green to be followed by an immediate yellow. Dorman spun collecting Jorden
Peters for caution four. Lacki cruised to the win his first of the season.
