By Glenn Slocum
Saturday May 7th, 2011 Busti, NY: Mother Nature finally relented and
after three rainouts Stateline Speedway’s 2011 racing season was underway.
Dennis Asel was the first 2011 feature winner besting Mike Moon for the
Spectator win. Ben Burgess Jr. easily won the Super Sportsman feature. Kelly
Frederes was the Outlaw Cadet winner.Rich Michael Jr. started on the pole and
led every lap for the E-Mod victory. Rod Maloy and Chris Hackett swapped the
lead several times early in the Super Late Model race with Maloy coming out on
top for the win. Dennis Lunger led every lap of the Crate Late Model feature for
his first Crate win at Stateline.
Steve
Keith and Damon Lewis were on the front row for the Spectator feature event.
Keith led the first circuit but lap two ended quickly with a five car pileup in
turn one. Twenty of the original twenty-two starters remained for the lap two
restart. Dennis Asel move up to challenge Keith then a lap five caution slowed
paced. Keith, Asel, Mike Moon, Lewis and Sam Courson were the restart leaders.
Asel was the first across the line on the restart as Keith lost several spots.
Moon was chasing the leader when the third caution fell with nine laps complete.
Courson tangled with Gary Fisher causing caution four one lap later. Cody Bliss
and Sam Cosanto caused caution five after 11 laps. Two more cautions kept the
lap counter on thirteen with Asel holding Moon at bay. Moon moved along side
Asel on the final lap. Asel and Moon made contact in the final corner but Asel
came out on top.
The
Super Sportsman ran the second feature event of the night and Ben Burgess Jr.
started second and led lap one. Al White left the speedway on lap four trailing
smoke. By lap seven Burgess led Jake Eller by nearly half a lap. Scott Lawson
looped his racer coming out of turn four with nine laps completed. Burgess,
Eller, Joe Buccola Jr. and Wade Watson were the leaders. Eller was the next to
fall victim to a spin causing caution two with eleven complete. Buccola was now
the runner up. Two laps later David Stein spun in turn two for caution three.
Burgess easily led the final two laps for the win.
Byron
Johnson had problems on the initial start of the Outlaw Cadet feature. Jake
Finnerty and Paul Norman Jr. were the leaders. The next start worked and Norman
won the race to turn one. Finnerty was second followed closely by Kelly
Frederes. A spin by Brian Larson brought out the second caution. Frederes was
second for the restart with Finnerty third. Larson had more problems on lap four
for caution three. Turn one seemed to be a problem for a number of racers as Bob
Rouche was the next to spin collecting John Cline. Chad Carlson moved into the
fray then Chad Schauers brought out the caution. Frederes grabbed the lead on
lap four. Debris on the front stretch caused caution number six with seven laps
complete. Frederes was out in front by several car lengths as Carlson was
pressing Norman for second. Carlson bested Norman just before the two to go
signal. Carlson was closing with Frederes but ran out of laps.
Thirty
E-Mods were lined up for the first E-Mod feature of the season and the first
yellow flew on the initial circuit. Attempt number two also ended with a
caution. The third attempt was a winner with Michael in control followed by John
Woodward Jr.. John Boyd lost the handle on lap five for caution number three.
Michael, Woodward and Dave Shagla were the top three. Jaben Hill spun after the
restart then retired to the pits. Jordan John spun in turn four on lap eight for
caution five. Shagla trailed Michael on the restart with Woodward third and
nineteen cars remained. By lap ten Michael led Shagla by twenty car lengths and
Butch Southwell was pressing Woodward for third. Ben Burgess, Boyd and Leonard
Enos tangled in four for caution six. Michael, Shagla, Southwell, Woodward and
Nathan Hill were the top five. Michael had the field covered for the win.
Chris
Hackett led the first two laps then Rod Maloy led lap three and Hackett fought
back to lead lap four or the Super Late Model feature. The leaders continued to
swap the lead until Maloy was able to gain a couple of car lengths as they both
raced around the bottom of the speedway. Veteran Dick Barton was third with
David Scott fourth and Dutch Davies fourth. At the half way mark Maloy remained
about 15 car lengths ahead of Hackett with the rest of the field running as low
as possible on the speedway. The race finished with out a caution and Barton
charged by Hackett for the runner up spot.
Dennis
Lunger led the first lap of the Crate Late Model feature. Ed Carley was second
and John Lacki third. The race ran green to checkers for Lunger for his first
Crate win at Stateline.
