September
2nd, 2011 - Andy Boozel Wins the Friday Edition of the Labor
Day Special Super Late Model Race at Stateline Speedway
By Glenn Slocum
Friday September 2nd, 2011 Busti, NY: The first
night of the Labor Day Special weekend at Stateline Speedway was hot and muggy.
Several Super Late Models beat the track record in the qualifying heats with
Doug Eck coming out as the fastest bettering the record by 0.583 seconds.
The top two qualified E-Mod drivers ran a foot race down the front straight and
the winner of qualifying heat number 3 Kyle Bedell won the race and the $500
prize.
Greg Fenno passed early race leader Pat McGuire just before the half way mark
for his first win of the season on his first visit.
Robbie Blair survived nine cautions to win the $1,500 winner share of the first
of two Crate Late Model Labor Day Specials. A late race caution saw three wide
racing for the win as Blair bested Justin Tatlow and T.J. Downs.
Andy Boozel used lap traffic to catch race leader Boom Briggs then took
advantage of a near spin by Briggs to win the Super Late Model Special.
John Boardman held off veteran E-Mod driver Dave Hess Jr. to win the twenty lap
E-Mod Special his second win in his E-Mod rookie season.
Dan Nocero Jr. won the Super Sportsman feature, his sixth win of the season and
Ben Burgess Jr. spun while third then raced up through the field for a third
place finish.
Several cars had problems making to turn one on the first lap of the Spectator
feature causing a complete restart. Brian Crandall and Pat McGuire were on the
front row and Crandall was the first around with McGuire a close second. Then on
lap two it was all McGuire as Crandall slipped to third and Greg Fenno was
second. A three car tangle in the middle of the back stretch with three laps
complete brought out the second caution. Nick Mohawk and Thoms left the speedway
on the hook during the yellow. On the restart Bill Best and Doug Moore had
problems in the exit of turn four for yellow number three. Three laps later Best
and Cody Bliss caused caution four. The lap seven restart ended with Mike Moon
facing the wrong direction on the front straight. McGuire, Fenno, Crandall and
2011 point Champ Paul Nelson were the leaders. This restart also failed when
Mohawk spun in on back stretch. Fenno made the outside pass just before the half
way mark sending McGuire back to second and Nelson took third from Crandall.
Cody Bliss narrowly missed disaster after pulling out from the infield in front
of the leaders. Fenno ran the final laps uncontested for his first win of the
season on his first visit of the season.
The Crate Late Models were led to the line by John
Lacki who also led the first circuit with Kevin Decker second and Matt Harvey
third. Two spinners caused the first yellow with three down. It was three wide
racing in the corners and down the back stretch on the restart with Lacki still
on top, Harvey second and Decker third. Two laps later Kyle Scott brought out
the second caution. Robbie Blair had joined the top three with Justin Tatlow
fifth for the restart. Blair was third on the next lap then a four car incident
caused caution three. Brian Haggerty, Bob Kish and Newt Tackett were part of the
melee. Blair was second on the next circuit tracking right behind Lacki as the
two started to move away from the rest of the field. Ed Carley, 2011 Crate Champ
and Bob Dorman collected yellow four with twelve laps complete. Another
multi-car incident ended lap fourteen as Blair and Lacki were running side by
side for the lead. On the restart Les Lyon tagged Bob Dorman collecting Carley
for yellow number six. Blair, Lacki, Tatlow, T. J. Downs and Harvey were the
leaders. Tatlow used the restart to pass Lacki for second and Blair was
attempting to runaway with the race amassing a straight away led in just three
laps. With ten laps remaining it was all Blair. Hordusky tagged Dorman causing
caution seven and ending the night for Dorman. Tatlow tried to stay with Blair
on the restart but could not. Dorman stopped in the pit entrance causing caution
eight with seven laps remaining. Lacki pulled into the infield right after the
restart the went into the pits. Kyle Scott was fourth after the restart with
Chad Valone fifth. Just as the two to go signal was given Brad Mesler spun for
caution nine. Blair’s lead evaporated as the field bunched for the restart. It
was three wide for the lead down the back stretch between Downs, Blair and
Tatlow with Blair coming out on top and Tatlow nipping Downs at the line for
second.
Boom Briggs, Andy Boozel, Dutch Davies, Randy
Lobb and Doug Eck made up the first three rows of the Friday edition of the
Super Late Model $3,000 to win Labor Day Special. Briggs led Davies and Boozel
by a nose on the first circuit then managed and car length lead on lap two. Dave
Hess Jr. charged by Boozel on lap four just as the yellow flew for Dennis Lunger
who limped into the pits. Briggs, Dutch Davies, Hess, Boozel and Randy Lobb were
the leaders. Eck was sixth with Rich Gardner alongside. Hess went high after the
restart and lost third to Boozel running low. Yellow two saw Hess leave the
speedway and David Scott was in fourth. A track tire on the speedway ended lap
eight with Briggs, Davies, Boozel, Randy Lobb and Scott the top five. Randy Lobb
lost three spots as Eck and Mike Knight were now fifth and sixth. Scott was up
on top looking for a little help from the cushion and managed to nip Dutch
Davies at the line for second on lap sixteen. Scott was now on Brigg’s bumper as
the top four moved away from the rest of the field. Scotts high groove seemed to
be failing him as Dutch Davies move on by. Lap traffic was an issues on lap
twenty-two catching up Davies and Scott allowing Boozel to get beside Briggs.
Briggs nearly spun on lap twenty six giving Boozel the chance he was waiting
four. Boozel took the lead followed quickly by the white then the win as Briggs
could not recover enough from the near spin to challenge.
Cale Crocker and John Boardman were on the front row
for the 20 lap E-Mod special. The initial start ended with four cars stopped in
turn one and the first yellow before a single lap was complete. The next restart
was no better as Dave Shagla and Nathan Hill spun in the exit turn four. Shagla
was towed to the pits during the caution. The twenty remaining cars finally
finished a lap on the third attempt. John Boardman was out in front with Cale
Crocker a distant second and Dave Hess Jr. third. Hess stayed on top to pass
Crocker for second on lap six then began to run down Boardman. As Hess was
closing with Boardman Jaben Hill passed Crocker for third and 2011 E-Mod Champ
Greg Johnson was fifth. On lap twelve Hess had caught Boardman and after trying
the high groove for the pass moved down looking for away around the E-Mod
rookie. Hill remained a distant third. Boardman took the white with Hess on his
bumper. Boardman maintained the line he had used the entire race and Hess could
not make the pass.
Dan Nocero Jr. started on the pole and took the early lead in the Super
Sportsman feature. Bob Hazzard spun in the middle of the back stretch bringing
out the caution. Nocero, 2011 Sportsman Champ Joe Buccola Jr., Ben Burgess, Wade
Watson and Clint Brady were the leaders. Two laps after the restart Brady slowed
to a stop on the back straight for caution number two ending his race night.
Jake Eller move into Brady’s spot for the restart. Chris Yarbrough brought
caution three with six laps complete. Burgess was now second and Buccola third.
Caution four occurred on lap nine. Bucola slipped under Burgess on the restart
and Burgess carried a little too much speed into turn one for solo spin and
caution five. Eller was now third behind Nocero and Buccola. Yarbrough lost the
handle and several cars spun to avoid for caution six. Eller stalled during the
incident and had to be pushed into the pits placing Watson in third. Burgess had
come from the back to fourth for the restart. As the white flew Burgess was
third. Nocero finished the race as he started it winning his sixth feature
event.
