By Glenn Slocum

ERIE, Pa. -- Eriez Speedway celebrated Memorial Day with the Applebee Motorsports E-Mod Championship Race. The first part of the two part event was won by Chad Ruhlman at Stateline Speedway. Mike Hess won the Championship race surviving several cautions and notching his second win of the season. Tom Norland made it look easy in the Spectator feature winning his third of the year. Ron Seeley led every lap of the Outlaw Cadet feature for his first win of the season. John Boardman narrowly defeated Chad Carlson to become the fourth Budweiser Sportsman feature winner in four races. Dave Hess Jr. passed Wendell Pinckney on the tenth lap of the Super Late Model feature to become the first double winner in the division. Leslie Armstrong kept her streak alive in the Lady Challenger division with her third win in four starts. Lee Matczak took the lead on lap five and never looked back winning his first feature in the Super Challengers.

Twenty-seven E-Mods were on hand for Part II of the Applebee Motorsports Championship race. Dave Hess Jr. and Mike Hess were in the front row with Chris Peterson and Dave Will in row two. Chris Peterson checked up in turn two on the first lap and collected nearly half the field necessitating a complete restart of the event. Several top runners were forced to start the event from the back. Dave and Mike Hess ran in perfect formation for almost three laps before Dave Hess got the advantage. Dave Will was third. Tommy Fox spun on lap four for the second caution. Dave and Mike Hess were first and second with Will third followed by Mike Boyd, Shane Applebee and Bill Thomas. Tom Hagberg spun collecting twelve cars in turn three on the restart. Mike Hess led lap four with Dave Hess second. The yellow flew for several cars with six laps complete and Dave Hess pulled into the pits with a smoking car turning over second to Boyd with Will third, Shane Applebee fourth and Fox fifth. Twenty-one cars remained for the lap seven restart. Will passed Boyd for second on the restart as the leader Mike Hess began to pull away from the field. Shawn McArdle spun on lap thirteen allowing the field to close with Mike Hess. With five to go the leaders remained the same then the yellow appeared once more Brian Fardink and Troy Carr. Will had problems on the restart losing several spots moving Shane Applebee to third and Brett Porter to fourth. Ryan Scott caused the next yellow with three laps remaining. Fox spun on the next lap setting up a two lap dash for the win. Dale Applebee passed Porter for fourth as the checkers flew for Hess.

Wendell Pinckney and Dave Hess Jr. brought out the Super Late Model feature with Merle Terry and Andy Boozel in the second row. At the end of the first lap Pinckney led but an incident involving Chris Hackett, Bump Hedman and Merle Terry brought out the yellow. Hess was second followed by Boozel, Rich Gardner and Andy Kania. Pinckney led the second lap followed by Hess and Gardner. Randy Lobb was fourth with Boozel fifth and Kania sixth. Hess made his move for the lead on lap ten putting Pinckney back to second. Once Hess cleared Pinckney he began to build a lead and was out in front by nearly a straight away at the half way mark. Boozel had problems in turn two with fourteen complete and the field closed with Hess. Lobb beat Gardner on the restart and Pinckney started to smoke. Pinckney took his smoking car to the pits on lap twenty giving Lobb a clear path to Hess who had a full straight away lead. Kania gave way to Doug Eck and Scot Gurdak as the white flew for Hess. Hess became the first double winner in the Super Late Models with Randy Lobb second and Rich Gardner third.

Ken Lamp Jr. was on the pole but Rick Thompson grabbed the lead at the drop of the green in the Spectator feature. Jason Heslop spun in three and the yellow was shown on lap two. Wade Watson was second for the restart followed by Lester Shoff and Tom Norland Jr. The lap two restart ended with the disqualification of Watson after and incident in turn two with Shoff. Nate Lester was moved up to third with Ken Jackson fourth. Norland passed Thompson for the lead on the second lap two restart. Shoff returned to the speedway on lap seven then one lap later Shoff tapped Thompson in turn three spinning Thompson and bringing out the yellow. Norland resumed the lead on the restart as Lester fell back several car lengths in second. Thompson had recovered from his spin as was running third by lap ten. Norland won going away with Lester second and Thompson third.

Ron Seeley and Dave Tolon were in the front row of the Outlaw Cadet feature. Tolon nearly spun in front of the field on the start falling clear to the back of the field. Seeley led the first lap with Louis DeDionisio in tow. Brian Zimmerly spun collecting Nathan Short with four laps complete and bringing out the yellow. Zimmerly brought out the caution with six laps completed. Tackett passed Cline on the restart lap then yellow flew for Chris Bowman in turn two. Seeley continued to lead after the restart followed by DeDionisio, Tackett, Cline, Weber and Knight. The yellow appeared on lap thirteen for George Milks who had stopped in turn two. DeDionisio could catch Seeley but could not make the pass giving Seeley his first win of the season.

Scott Kuschel won the drag race to turn one on the start of the Budweiser Super Sportsman feature. Dan Francis spun while running second collecting Bobby Rohrer but not causing a caution. John Boardman was second with Chris Kuschel third. Scott Kuschel bobbled coming out of four on lap nine and Boardman made the pass for the lead. A lap twelve spin by Jake Eller slowed the race. Boardman, Scott Kuschel, Chad Carlson, Chris Kuschel and Pat McGuire were the top five for the restart. Don McGuire moved into the top five on the restart and Carlson went to second. Carlson moved up on the outside of Boardman on the final lap and in a photo finish the Boardman was declared the winner. It was Boardman’s first win and the fourth different winner in the division.

Justin Tkalszeaski led the first lap of the Super Challenger event with Duane Hinkson second and Aron Dascomb third. Lee Matczak moved to the front passing both Hinkson and Tkalszeaski on lap five. A loose wheel brought out the caution with six laps complete. Matczak was the leader with Tkalszeaski second and Chris Withers third. Matczak won the event for his first win of the season.
