Dave Hess Jr. Super Late Model Winner
At Stateline Speedway
By Glenn Slocum
Busti, NY: The House of Television sponsored Spectator Championship event
highlighted the racing at Stateline Speedway on Saturday night.
Rich Gardner
defended his Budweiser King of the Hill defeating Scott Gurdak in the five lap
match race. John Galati won the Spectator event from his fifteenth starting spot
making it his second win of the season. Dave Hess Jr. won the Super Late Model
event leading from the initial green. Chad Carlson took control of the Budweiser
Super Sportsman event on lap seven notching his second win of the season. Nathan
Short won the Outlaw Cadet feature. Quincy Turner led every lap of the E-Mod
feature for his first win. Michelle Swabik won the Lady Challenger feature and
Carlos Aponte won the first Super Challenger feature and Kevin Golden won the
second.
Dave Hess Jr. led the first lap of the Super Late Model Feature with Dave
Tackett second and Darrell Bossard third. Then an incident in turn two on lap
two collected Paul Briggs, Rich Gardner, Andy Boozel, Ward Schell, Dave Lyon and
Doug Eck. Hess, Tackett, Bossard, Matt Urban and Dick Barton were the top five
for the restart. Tackett spun to a stop coming out of turn two on the restart
stopping faced in the wrong direction and Chris Hackett drove nearly completely
under Tackett. Both cars left the speedway on the hook. Hess led lap three with
Urban second followed by Scott Gurdak, Dick Barton and Bossard. Hess was out in
front by several car lengths over Urban on lap five as the field began to string
out around the speedway. Randy Lobb moved by Bossard for fifth on lap seven and
the yellow flew for Ward Schell in turn two. Starter Mark Matthew waived off the
restart and accepted the next. Hess completed lap ten with Urban, Barton,
Gurdak, Lobb and Bossard in tow. Hess stated to pull away from Urban at the
crossed flags and Gurdak had settled into third followed by Barton and Bossard.
The race remained green with Hess slowly catching the back markers and Urban
several car lengths behind. Hess would not be caught winning his first of the
season with Urban second and Gurdak third.
Dave McClenahan jumped into the early led of the Spectator Championship
event. Shayne Erhard spun then pulled back onto the track in front of the
leaders collecting Jason Genco for the first yellow with six laps complete.
Genco suffered a flat in the incident. McClenahan, Mark Thompson, Bill Reeves,
Clarence Dickerson and Lonnie Waldron were the leaders for the lap seven
restart. The top four restarted single file with the rest of the field doubling
up. Thompson challenged McClenahan on the restart but McClenahan held on. One
lap later McClenahan lost the handle in turn three spinning for the second
caution. Mark Thompson became the new leader with John Galati second and
Dickerson third. Galati finished his charge to the front by grabbing the lead
from Thompson on the restart. A lap ten spin by Erhard brought out the third
yellow just before the halfway mark. Galati quickly gained a six car length
advantage over Thompson. The race remained green until lap seventeen when Dan
Clark slowed to a stop on the front stretch. Thompson nearly spun in turn one on
the restart and then several cars spun causing the yellow to quickly follow the
green. Galati, Thompson and Dickerson were still the leaders. The yellow flew
once more on the white flag lap for Clark in turn four and John Britt in turn
two. Galati won the last lap dash to win his second of the season.
Tim Nocero led the early laps of the Budweiser Super Sportsman feature. Ben
Burgess was second followed by Bob Van Arsdale. John Boardman took over third on
lap five then a spin by Steve Kania brought out the caution with six laps
complete. Chad Carlson stole third from Boardman on the restart for third then
one lap later moved into second. Kania had trouble once more and the yellow flew
on lap eleven. Hank Francis tagged the wall in turn one on the restart returning
the yellow to the speedway before another lap was completed. Nocero lost control
in turn two on the restart giving Carlson the lead with Mike Kosinski second and
Don McGuire third. Francis and Jake Eller made contact on the backstretch
sending Francis in to a violent barrel roll down the track. The car came to rest
in the middle of the speedway as the red flag flew. Francis was quickly checked
by the safety crew and reported that he was fine. The yellow flew once more with
three remaining. Hazzard put heavy pressure on Kosinski for the second spot in
the final laps as Carlson led. Carlson won the event for his second of the
season.
Lester Shoff grabbed the lead on the start of the Outlaw Cadet feature
followed by Nathan Short. Short nearly spun on lap two but did not lose as spot
then the yellow flew for Paul Norman in turn three. Shoff spun one lap after the
restart bringing out the second yellow and sending Short to the top spot
followed by Brian Crandall and Steve Moynihan. John Cline moved into third on
the restart then the yellow flew with six complete for Joe Harvey. Shoff
continued to have problems spinning again in turn three with thirteen laps
complete. Crandall broke on the final lap while fighting with Cline for the
second spot. Short took the checkers with Cline in the runner up spot.
Quincy Turner led the E-Mods onto the speedway for their feature event and
led the first lap. Ron Seeley was second followed by Scott Pangrazio. Adam
Hilyer bought out the first caution on lap three. After several laps of side by
side racing Pangrazio took control of the second spot with Dave Hess Jr. third
and Seeley fourth. Turner had caught the end of the field with five laps
remaining and Hess passed Pangrazio for the second spot. Dana Wellington spun to
a stop in turn four with sixteen laps complete for the second yellow. Turner led
the final four laps for his first win of the season.
Michelle Swabik, Amanda Swanson and Jodee Jordan were the early leaders of
the Lady Challenger event. Jordan took second on lap three sending Swanson back
to third as Swabik led by nearly a quarter of a lap. Swabik won her first of the
season with Jordan second.
