August 18th, 2006 - Justin Carlson Wins Applebee Motorsports E-Mod Mania
David Scott Super Late Model Winner
at Stateline Speedway
By Glenn Slocum
Busti, NY: There were thirty-six E-Mods on hand for Applebee Motorsports
E-Mod Mania to kick off back to back race nights at Stateline Speedway. Five
cars were qualified through each of the four E-Mod heats and two from each of
the two consolation events. Dale Applebee, Tom Hagberg, Al Crocker and Chad
Silleman were the E-Mod Mania heat winners. Jamie Earhart and Robbie Blair won
the E-Mod Consolation races. Justin Carlson battled Dave Hess Jr. the entire
E-Mod main event winning by two car lengths at the end. Dave Scott prevailed in
a photo finish over Dave Hess Jr. after a race-long battle for the lead. Rick
Thompson won his second of the season in the Spectator division. Steve Moynihan
led every lap of the Outlaw Cadet feature for his second win of the season.
Michelle Swabik won the Lady Challenger feature. Kyle Jackson won his first
feature in the first Super Challenger race and Alex Froman won his third in the
second. Rusty Briggs won the Budweiser Super Sportsman feature for his third.
The top twelve qualified E-Mods were inverted for the 30 lap main event
with Dave Hess Jr. and Justin Carlson on the front row. Carlson and Hess were
side by side at the end of lap one. Carlson slid up in front of Hess to lead lap
two, with Dustin Eckman third and Quincy Turner fourth. Jim Frontz, Robbie Blair
and Dave Atkinson brought out the first yellow on lap five. Dave Scott brought
out the second caution on the restart. The second restart of lap six worked with
Carlson leading and Hess two car lengths back. Carlson and Hess were nearly a
straight away ahead of Turner when the yellow reappeared with ten laps down for
Robbie Blair and Jason Wile. Carlson retained the lead after the restart with
Hess still second, Turner third and last week’s feature winner Tom Hagberg
fourth. Hagberg passed Turner on lap thirteen and set off to chase down Carlson
and Hess. Two laps later Dale Applebee passed Turner for fourth and Greg Johnson
moved up to challenge Turner for fifth. With ten laps remaining lap traffic
became a problem for Carlson as Hess moved alongside. Hess was unable to make
the pass and settled into the second spot as the leaders approached heavy lap
traffic. With five laps remaining Carlson led at line by two car lengths.
Atkinson spun in turn two for the third caution with twenty-seven laps complete.
Top three started single file for the last three laps and Carlson grabbed a five
car length lead on Hess which Hess was never able to make up giving Carlson the
win.
Scott Johnson, Miles Stitzinger, Steve Halpainy, Matt Lanphere and Chris
Hackett tangled on the first lap of the Super Late Model feature causing a
complete restart of the event. Dave Hess Jr. led lap one then the yellow flew
once again this time for Wendell Pinckney in turn one. The restart again brought
out the yellow this time for Paul Briggs, Robbie Blair, Mike Knight, Chevy
Scott, Randy Lobb, Ron Maloy and Bump Hedman. Lap two was completed with David
Scott the new leader, Hess was second followed by Scott Gurdak, John Lacki, Rich
Gardner and Scott Johnson. Hess tried a slid job on Scott on lap eight but came
up a little short as they approached the rear of the field. Doug Eck slowed to a
stop with ten laps complete for yellow number four. Sixteen cars remained for
the restart which Scott controlled. Gardner passed Lacki on lap twelve for the
fourth spot. Scott and Hess were both running the cushion with ten laps
remaining with Gurdak several car lengths behind and Gardner slowly catching
Gurdak. Gardner moved under Gurdak on lap eighteen then again on lap nineteen
but could not make the pass. Hess tried the low side once more on lap nineteen
but again came up short. Chad Valone and Randy Lobb brought out the fifth
caution with twenty laps complete. Five laps remained at the restart and Hess
and Scott continued to battle with Hess finally making the slide job work on lap
twenty one just before the caution flew for Andy Boozel stopped up against the
fence in the exit of turn four putting Scott back in the lead. The leaders got
the two to go signal with Hess low and Scott high, they continued to swap the
lead over the final two laps and at the photo finish Scott led by inches.
Dave Johnson led the first five laps of the Spectator feature then spun in
turn two for the second yellow of the event. Aron Dascomb became the new leader
with Rick Thompson second and Ryan Seekings third. Dascomb slowed after the
restart then spun in turn four collecting Stan Davis for the third yellow.
Thompson was now the leader with Seekings, Bill Reeves third and Glenn Slaney
fourth and six laps complete. Slaney passed Reeves on lap eight then Reeves spun
one lap later for the fourth yellow. Thompson remained in charge after the
restart. With two laps to go Slaney grabbed second form Seekings. On the white
flag lap the yellow appeared for the final time. The one lap dash to the finish
was one by Thompson for his second win of the season.
Rusty Briggs was the early leader in the Budweiser Super Sportsman feature
with Jake Eller second and Ben Burgess third. Chad Carlson took third from
Burgess on lap seven and one lap later Eller moved up to challenge Briggs for
the lead. Eller continued to test Briggs but came up a car length short at the
finish.
Steve Moynihan led the first lap of the Outlaw Cadet feature. The yellow
appeared on lap two for Bob Vogt Jr. and Paul Himes. Moynihan led for two more
laps then the yellow appeared for Eugene Bevil in turn three. With four laps
complete Himes stopped bringing out the third yellow. Paul Norman Jr., Nathan
Short made it a three way fight for the lead after the restart. By lap eight
Mike Moore and Andy Knight had joined the fray. A spin by Moore on lap nine did
not bring out the caution. Andy Knight passed Short on lap twelve as Moynihan
moved out to a five car length lead. Moynihan took the checkers then spun while
celebrating the win breaking and tie rod and limped back to the start finish for
the winner’s photo.
Mark Crandall led lap one of the first Super Challenger feature then gave way
to Casey Burch on lap two. At the half way point Burch led with Kyle Jackson
second and Brian Wilson third. Chuck Green spun in turn three with six laps
complete for the first and only yellow of the event. Jackson took the lead on
the restart and led the final two laps for his first win.
Jesse Dash led the first lap of the second Super Challenger feature then lost
the lead to Jeff Strickland on a lap two restart. On lap four Strickland fell to
a charging Alex Froman. Froman ran the remainder of the race unchallenged for
his third win.
