August 5th, 2006 - Rich Gardner Wins 50th on Tobber Racing Night at
Stateline Speedway
By Glenn Slocum
Busti, NY: The Reunion
kicked off the Tobber Racing sponsored events at Stateline Speedway. Many of the
retired drivers were on hand for the event including Sammy LaMancuso, Emory
Mahan, Jim Scott, Dizzy Eades, Skip Furlow, John Whitehead, Floyd Finale, Boyd
Whitehead, Ken Shearer and Charlie Robinson. Ed Nelson long time flagman and
original owners Leonard Briggs, Don and Jerry Frank were also in attendance.
Rich Gardner finally broke into the win column leading every lap of the Super
Late Model feature. Gardner’s fifteenth career win moved him into a tie for
eight on the all time Stateline Super Late winners list with Chub Frank, Rod
Maloy and Jim Scott and was his fiftieth Super Late win.
Bobby Rohrer won the Outlaw Cadet King of the Hill
event defeating Paul Norman Jr. in the last round. Dave Hess Jr. successfully
defended his Budweiser Super Late Model King of the Hill title defeating Mike
Knight.
\ John Galati won a caution strewn Spectator feature
for his third of the year and Justin Carlson won his eighth in a heavily
contested E-Mod feature. John Boardman led every lap of the Budweiser Super
Sportsman feature for his first of the season. Phil Knight also reached the
winners circle for the first time in 2006 in the Outlaw Cadet feature. Stephanie
Hilyer won her third Lady Challenger feature. Greg Rockwell won the first Super
Challenger feature and Rick Karash won the second.
Rich Gardner, Dick Barton, Andy Boozel and Merle Terry
were the top four for the Super Late Model feature. Bump Hedman and Dave Hess
Jr. were in row three. Gardner led by three car lengths at the end of the first
circuit with Barton and Boozel fighting for second and Hess fourth. Ward Schell
and Ted Kosinski brought out the yellow with three laps complete. Hess went from
fourth to second on the restart then the yellow flew as several cars nearly spun
on lap six. Gardner, Hess, Boozel, Barton and Eck were the restart leaders. Chad
Valone moved up to challenge Eck for fifth after the restart. Hedman stopped low
in turn four forcing caution three. Gardner continued to lead Hess as the field
approached the half way mark. Boozel remained third followed by Barton, Eck and
Randy Lobb. Before Gardner caught the rear of the field the yellow flew for Ryan
Scott in turn four with six laps remaining. Randy Lobb passed Barton on the
restart lap and Gardner had a five car length lead over Hess and Boozel. Gardner
extended his advantage over the final circuits leading by several car lengths at
the checkers for his first win of the season.
Doug Moore and John Kersey were on the front row of the
Spectator feature with Stan Davis and Berton Chapel in row two. Moore led the
first lap with Kelsey second and Dave Johnson third. Johnson grabbed second on
lap two ten fell back to third one lap later as John Galati took second. Galati
nearly spun on lap five allowing Gary Fisher and Rick Thompson by. On the next
lap Fisher was in first with Thompson second and Galati third. With nine laps
complete Shayne Erhard spun for the first caution. Starter Mark Matthews did not
like the start and several cars spun in turn one when the caution light came on,
Glenn Slaney lost a wheel in the incident and Fisher required a wrecker to get
to the pits and Thompson was sent to the back. On the next restart Moore, John
Britt and Wade Watson tangled for another yellow. Galati and Genco were the
leader after the restart and the race stayed green until Kelsey and Erhard came
together coming out of turn two with twelve laps complete. Galati, Genco and
Aron Dascomb led after the restart finishing the final three laps in the same
order. It was Galati’s third win of the season.
Nathan Short, Justin Carlson and Scooter Pangrazio
battled for the number one spot from the start of the E-Mod feature event. The
race stayed green for just two when the yellow appeared for a spinner in turn
four. Short led briefly after the restart then gave way to Carlson and
Pangrazio. Bret Van Guilder spun on the front stretch for the second caution
with four laps complete. Carlson led the next two with Pangrazio less than an
half a car length behind. The two leaders continued the side by side racing
through the half way mark with Short several car lengths behind. Scooter led by
a whisker on lap twelve when Brian Guzowski brought out the third yellow.
Pangrazio, Carlson, Short, Troy Carr and Ron Seeley were the restart leaders.
The yellow reappeared with twelve laps complete for Jake Halpainy just after
Carlson took back the lead. Short tested Pangrazio on the restart but could not
make the pass. Pangrazio slipped up the track on lap fifteen losing several
spots giving second to Short. With two to go the yellow reappeared for Bill Van
Volkenburg. Carlson led the final two laps getting his eighth win in fifteen
starts.
The green fell and the wreck started on the first lap
of the Super Sportsman feature. Rusty Briggs, Chad Carlson and Jake Eller were
some of the drivers involved. John Boardman emerged as the leader on lap one.
Kelly Frederes was second with Mike Kosinski third. At the half way point
Boardman led by several car lengths as Frederes and Kosinski fought for second.
Carlson slowed to a stop for the second yellow with eleven laps complete.
Kosinski was second after the restart and pressed Boardman over the final laps
but could not pass giving Boardman his first of the season.
Phil Knight led the first lap of the Outlaw Cadet
feature with Lester Shoff second and Nathan Short third. The race stayed green
and Knight remained the leader at the half way point. The first yellow appeared
for a slowing Troy Dorman on lap twelve. Knight, Short, Mike Moore, Shoff and
Andy Knight were the leaders. Bobby Rohrer grabbed fifth on the restart lap then
the yellow reappeared for Matt Lanphere, Paul Norman and Andy Knight. Knight ran
the final three laps unchallenged for his first 2006 win.
