- Justin Carlson Wins Erickson’s Family Restaurant Championship Race Dick Barton Wins Super Late Model Feature At
Stateline Speedway
By Glenn Slocum
Busti, NY: The rain
subsided just in time to prep the track for Erickson’s Restaurant sponsored
events at Stateline Speedway. Justin Carlson led from lap two and held off Dave
Hess Jr. through the final laps to win the E-Mod Championship event and his
third in a row. Wade Watson won his second Spectator feature. Bob Van Arsdale
inherited the lead after Don McGuire broke to win his first Budweiser Super
Sportsman feature. Bump Hedman broke just before the start of the Budweiser
Super Late Model King of the Hill giving the win to Chad Valone. Dick Barton won
his sixty-seventh Super Late Model feature event from his fifth starting spot
grabbing the lead from Randy Lobb on lap fifteen. Nathan Short won after a
controversial finish in the Outlaw Cadet feature. Mary Hammond won the Lady
Challenger feature, Paul Nelson and Jim Chase were the Super Challenger winners.
Randy Lobb, Steve Halpainy, Rich Gardner, Paul Briggs
and Dick Barton were the top five in Super Late Model feature. At the end of the
first lap Halpainy led followed by Lobb, Gardner, Barton and Briggs. Ted
Kosinski and Merle Terry spun to avoid and out of shape Ron Davies for the first
caution of the event with four laps complete. Halpainy, Lobb, Gardner and Barton
brought the field around for the lap five restart. Lobb bolted to the lead on
the restart and Barton nosed by Gardner for third. Barton continued to charge
passing Halpainy for the runner up spot just before Randy Shear, Miles
Stitzinger and Dave Tackett tangled on the front stretch for the second yellow
with seven laps in the books. Halpainy lost several spot on the restart and Dave
Lyon moved into fourth with Halpainy a distant fifth. Rod Maloy moved into fifth
on lap thirteen and the yellow flew for Chris Hackett on lap fourteen. Dave Hess
Jr. stole fifth from Maloy on the restart. One Lap later Lobb slipped coming out
of turn two and Barton took control. Lobb load another spot again in turn two as
Gardner took advantage. The battle for third heated up with Lobb, Hess and Lyon
all trying for the spot. Andy Boozel lost the handle in turn four collecting
Terry and John Volpe for the fourth caution with four laps remaining. Barton
moved away from the field on the restart and one lap later the yellow flew for
Stitzinger who has slowed with a right front flat. Lobb pulled into the pits on
the white flag as Barton cruised to checkers for his sixty-seventh win at
Stateline.
Ron Seeley started in front and led the first lap of
the E-Mod Championship Race and the yellow flew for Bret Van Guilder on lap two.
Seeley, Justin Carlson, Mike Hess, Dave Hess and Chad Silleman were the restart
leaders. Carlson came out on top after the restart with Seeley second, Dave Hess
third and Mike Hess fourth. Carlson had caught the tail end of the filed on lap
eight. Carlson seemed to gain ground in lap traffic. Chevy Scott spun to a stop
in turn four for the second caution with eleven of the twenty-five laps
complete. Wayne Anderson was slow exiting the track forcing the yellow to appear
right after the green. Jason Wile spun one lap later for the fourth yellow.
Quincy Turner had suspension problems and slowed on the back stretch for yellow
number five one lap later. Dave Hess tested Carlson on the restart but could not
make the pass and the race was slowed once more when Robert Nocero collected
Greg Johnson in turn four. The yellow came out for Ryan Bright with nineteen
laps complete. With five laps remaining Carlson and Dave Hess were in front of
Seeley by several car lengths and ran that way until the final lap when Tim
Peterson brought out the final caution of the event setting up a one lap dash
for the win. Carlson was up to the challenge holding off Dave Hess on the final
lap for his third win in a row.
Jamie Brown and Dave Surrena were on the front row of
the Spectator feature with Ryan Seekings and Rodney Thoms in row two. Surrena
led the first lap then lost the lead to Thoms on lap two. Wade Watson was third.
Rush Firestone slowed to a stop on the back stretch causing the first caution of
the event with five laps complete. Just one more lap was completed before the
second yellow appeared for Jeff Lamb. Rich Thompson joined the battle for the
lead on lap seven then the third yellow appeared for Lonnie Waldron. Thoms,
Watson and Thompson were the leaders for the restart with Buzz Phearsdorf fourth
and Glenn Slaney fifth. Watson led lap eight with Thompson second, Slaney third
and Thoms in fourth. Lap traffic became a factor on lap ten when Thompson struck
Brown in turn four then collected Slaney for yellow number four. Watson, Dave
McClenahan and Thoms were the leaders for the restart. Watson was several car
lengths ahead of McClenahan with two to go and easily won the race and John
Galati made a late race charge to finish third.
Rusty Briggs was turned around on the first lap of
the Budweiser Super Sportsman before the lap could be complete causing a
complete restart. Bob Van Arsdale was on the pole with Hank Francis second. Van
Arsdale led the first lap then the yellow flew for Aaron Robinson in turn one.
Van Arsdale, Francis and Chris Kuschel were the leader after the restart. Don
McGuire moved by Kuschel for third on lap five as Van Arsdale started to run
away from the rest of the field. It took McGuire just two laps to pass Francis
and start to run down Van Arsdale and three circuits later he caught and passed
Van Arsdale for the lead. Tim Nocero had problems exiting the track the yellow
flew with two laps remaining. McGuire stopped during the caution and had to be
pushed to the pits giving the lead back to Van Arsdale who led the final two for
his first win of the season.
Steve Moynihan led the first lap of the Outlaw Cadet
feature which ended with a yellow for John Cline in turn four. Brian Crandall
was second with Paul Norman third and Nathan Short fourth. Crandall vaulted to
the front on the restart followed by Short as Moynihan fell to third with Norman
fourth and Mike Moore fifth. Enos spun bringing out yellow number two and
Moynihan spun to stop after the yellow requiring a wrecker to return to the
pits. Short beat Crandall to turn one becoming the third leader on lap five.
Moore was third then Norman spun in turn four collecting Phil Knight for yellow
number three. Nine laps were complete with Enos spun once more for caution four.
A lap eleven spin by Lester Shoff brought out caution five. Moore passed
Crandall for the second spot and caught Short as the white flag flew. Moore
tried to move around Short in the final turn but Short moved up the speedway
making contact with Moore forcing Moore to lift allowing Short to win.
