Rod Maloy Super Late Model Winner At Stateline Speedway
By Glenn Slocum
Busti, NY: A perfectly prepared race track, warm weather and lots of race cars was the perfect recipe for Bear Lake Inn night at Stateline Speedway. The American Sprint Car
Series Patriot division was on hand for their fifth appearance at Stateline. ASCS regional point leader Chuck Hebing from Ontario won his heat and the Bonnell Dash to earn the pole
starting spot for their A-Main then lead every lap of the event for his first win at Stateline and his fifth win of the season.
Darrell Bossard wrested the Super Late Model King of
the Hill title from Andy Kania. Aron Dascomb grabbed the lead on lap twelve in a caution strewn Spectator feature for his second win of the season. Rod Maloy who his second Super
Late Model feature of the season moving up to seventh in the all time Super Late Model win list. Nathan Short won the Outlaw Cadet feature passing early leader Steve Moynihan then
led from green to checkers for his first win of the season in the E-Mod class. Bob Hazzard won his third Super Sportsman feature. Stephanie Devereaux won the Lady Challenger
feature. Rick Karash and Skip Jackson were the Super Challenger winners.
Chuck Hebing and Scott Bonnell were on the front row for the ASCS twenty-five lap A-Main. Scott Kreutter and Jared Zimbardi were in row two. Hebing charged in to the lead on the
restart and Bonnell did a three-sixty in turn two losing several spots as Gary Troutman grabbed second. Hebing was into lap traffic on lap four with a half a lap lead over
Troutman. Dereck Jonathan spun to a stop for the first caution with eight laps complete. The second place car of Troutman slowed to a stop bringing out the second caution one lap
later. Hebing easily moved away from the field on the restart with Zimbardi alone in second. Chris Shuttleworth and Geoff Quackenbush tangled with sixteen laps complete leaving
Shuttleworth stopped and Quackenbush on his side for the first red of the race. Hebing, Zimbardi and Bonnell were the restart leaders. Zimbardi was able to hang with Hebing as the
laps ran down. With twenty-one laps complete Tim Zack stopped facing the fence in turn two for the third yellow. Four laps remained in the event. Zimbardi lost ground on the
restart as Hebing moved from the top of the speedway to the bottom. Hebing made it win number five in the season and his first at Stateline in three tries.
Twenty-four
Super Late Models took the green with Rod Maloy coming out on top of lap one but the yellow flew for spinning Rich Gardner as the lap ended. Maloy, Mike Knight and Chris Hackett
were the restart leaders. Bump Hedman was third at the end of lap two. The second yellow appeared for several cars including Paul Briggs, John Volpe, J.C. Lechner and Ryan Scott.
Briggs was sent to the pits after the incident. Maloy remained the leader with Knight in two bur Hedman lost two spots and Doug Eck was third and Hackett fourth. Maloy moved away
from the pack and had a fifteen car length lead at the end of the first ten laps. Eck was challenging Knight for second with John Lobb back about fifteen car lengths in fourth.
Chad Ruhlman made an appearance in the top five with fifteen complete from his thirteenth starting spot. The race remained green and with five to go Maloy was in heavy lap traffic
with a commanding lead over Knight and Eck had faded to a distant third. Lobb and Eck make contact as the white flag flew allowing Ruhlman to move to third and smoking Eck finished
fourth as Maloy won his second of the year.
Rick
Thompson spun on the first lap of the Outlaw Cadet feature forcing a complete restart of the event. Steve Moynihan took the lead and led the first three laps before the second
yellow for Leonard Enos. Nathan Short caught Moynihan shortly after the restart to become the second leader of the event. Short continued to move away from the filed as the race
stayed green. The battle was for third with John Cline holding off a battered Mike Moore and Mike Knight. It was Shorts second win of the season.
Ryan
Seekings led the first circuit of the Spectator feature but a spin by Matt Harvey brought out the yellow before lap two could be completed. Seeking controlled the restart with
Lonnie Waldron in the runner up spot and Buzz Phearsdorf third. John Britt, Harvey and Aron Dascomb tangled with four laps complete for the second yellow. Phearsdorf led lap five
by a bumper over Seekings then the third yellow for Wayne Mohawk and Britt. John Kelsey brought out the yellow after the completion of one more lap. Phearsdorf, Gary Fisher and
Seekings were the leaders. Fisher passed Phearsdorf on lap eight becoming the third different leader. Seeking lost the handle with ten laps complete for the fifth caution, pushing
Aron Dascomb up to second with Phearsdorf third. Fisher just held off Dascomb on lap eleven and the yellow reappeared for Waldron in turn four. Dascomb made it stick on the next
restart then Fisher pulled up next to the fence for caution seven. Dascomb, Phearsdorf and Alex Froman were the leaders for the lap thirteen restart. Again just one lap was
completed before the yellow flew for Wade Watson and Kelsey. Dascomb led lap thirteen and the yellow flew for Jermin Strickland. Phearsdorf nearly spun trying to go under a high
flying Dascomb then one more yellow for Rick Sperry in turn four. Phearsdorf was third for the restart with Dave McClenahan second. Dascomb held on for his second of the season.
Ben Burgess
started on the pole and stayed out in front when the race started. A caution occurred for Jake Eller with three laps complete. Tim Nocero emerged as the new leader after the
restart than one lap later Bob Hazzard grabbed the lead. The yellow flew for Bryan Ester with five complete. Steve Kania brought out the yellow one lap later with six down. Hazzard
led by several car lengths with ten laps down. John Boardman was second followed by Rusty Briggs, Tim Nocero and Don McGuire. A lap thirteen spin by Bob Van Arsdale brought out
yellow four. Hazzard took the white then the checkers for his third of the season.
Nathan
Short grabbed the early lead in the E-Mod feature trailed by Scott Gurdak and Chad Ramsey. The yellow flew for Matt Swanson and Troy Carr with three laps complete. Gurdak fell to
third after the restart as Ramsey moved to second. A lap five spin for Swanson brought out the second caution. Short, Ramsey and Gurdak led the next three laps when a spin by Jason
Genco brought the field under yellow. Shortly after the cross flags Gurdak used the inside line to pass Ramsey for the runner up spot. Gurdak began to run down Short and with five
laps remaining trailed by just three car lengths. The battle for third was heating up as Justin Carlson and Bobby Powell pressed Ramsey for the spot. Short took the win with Gurdak
in tow and Ramsey held on to the third spot.
