Chad Valone Wins Super Late Model Feature
At Stateline Speedway
By Glenn Slocum
Busti, NY: Mother Nature provided another perfect race night for the Erickson’s Restaurant E-Mod Double Nickel. Thirty E-Mods were on hand for the double feature event.
Randy Hall grabbed the lead on lap two of the first E-Mod feature and then survived several cautions for the win. Hall continued his winning ways in the second event passing early
leader Scott Gurdak for the win.
Darrell Bossard nipped Paul Briggs at the line to
retain his Super Late Model King of the Hill title. Mike Moore won his fourth of the season in a close battle with Mike Knight in the Outlaw Cadets. Rusty Briggs passed Steve Kania
on lap eight for his first win of the season. Chad Valone held off a charging Rod Maloy to bag his first win of the season. Buzz Phearsdorf won his second of the season in a
caution filled Spectator feature. Amanda Swanson won her sixth Lady Challenger feature. Jim Mescall won his second Super Challenger feature and Rick Karash won his fifth.
Al
Cressley and Paul Briggs were on the front row of the first "Double Nickel" E-Mod feature. Cressley led the first circuit then gave way to Randy Hall on the second lap. The first
yellow appeared with three laps complete for Bret Van Guilder, Andy Sweetland and Steve Simon. Hall, Cressley, Briggs, Dave Lyon and Greg Johnson were the restart leaders. One more
lap was completed when the yellow flew for Troy Carr and Brian Fardink. Cressley passed Hall on the restart the yellow flew for Paul Geiger and during the yellow Cressley pulled
into the pits putting Hall back on top followed by Johnson, Briggs, Lyon and Chad Silleman. Cressley rejoined the race before the green. Hall quickly built a straight away lead
over the one more yellow for Simon in turn one slowed the race again. Hall, Briggs, Silleman, Dennis Lunger and Justin Carlson were the restart leaders. Chad Ruhlman stopped on the
speedway for caution five with nine laps complete. The restart green was quickly followed by another yellow for Cale Crocker, Chad Ramsey and Simon. Briggs pushed up to the fence
on the restart losing several spots allowing Carlson to move into the second spot followed by Johnson, Silleman and Scott Gurdak. A lap thirteen spin by Ramsey brought out the
caution for the seventh time. Johnson brought out the eighth caution with fourteen complete. Debris slowed the race with fifteen of the twenty laps completed. Carlson tested Hall
on the restart but could not make the pass and the yellow flew for Jason Genco. Hall, Carlson, Gurdak, Nathan Short and Tom Hagberg were the top five when the yellow flew for
Crocker. The final three laps were run with out a caution and Hall won by ten car lengths and Carlson barely held off Gurdak at the line for second.
Brain
Crandall led the first lap of the Outlaw Cadet feature and Kelly Frederes led lap two. Rick Thompson and Steve Moynihan brought out the yellow with two laps complete. Crandall
charged back after the restart to lead lap three with Mike Knight second and Frederes third. Knight used the high groove to pas Crandall on lap five. Crandall and Frederes tangled
with six complete for the second caution. Knight, Mike Moore, Nathan Short, John Cline and Paul Norman were the restart leaders. Moore moved up alongside Knight on the restart lap
and make the pass stick on lap eight. Knight would not give up and continued to press Moore as Cline fought for third with Short. With two to go Moore was three car lengths ahead
of Knight. Moore survived another challenge by Knight on the white flag but held on for the win.
Eric Ester
led the first two laps of the Super Sportsman feature losing the handle on lap three collecting Kelly Frederes for the first yellow. Bryan Ester and Steve Kania were on the front
row for the lap three restart. Kania was the first by the flag stand on lap three with Rusty Briggs second and Ben Burgess third. Bryan Ester and Pete Volpe brought out caution
three. Kania temporarily lost the led to Briggs on the restart then the yellow flew for Burgess on lap six. Kania held on for one more lap falling to Briggs on lap eight. A lap
eleven yellow for Eric Ester allowed Kania to close with Briggs. Kania was unable to mount another challenge for the top spot as the laps ran down. Briggs won his first of the
season several car lengths ahead of Kania with Nocero a close third.
Veteran
Miles Stitzinger was on the pole for the Super Late Model feature with Matt Urban along side. The first lap was marred by a back stretch roll over by Andy Kania. Kania was quickly
out of his upside down race car. Paul Briggs and Merle Terry were also involved in the incident. Urban jumped the cushion on the restart for the second yellow before a single lap
was completed. Andy Boozel was now beside Stitzinger on the front row. Stitzinger went high on the first lap leaving the bottom open for Chris Hackett to take the lead. Chad Valone
and Dick Barton passed Stitzinger on the lap two. Both Valone and Barton pressed Hackett over the next several laps with first Hackett leading then Valone and Barton waiting for an
opening. Point leader Rod Maloy joined the fray with nine laps complete. Valone gained the upper hand on lap ten as Hackett, Barton and Maloy were three wide on the back stretch
for second. Maloy came out on top with Hackett now third and Barton fourth. Maloy tracked down Valone as the he entered lap traffic and Barton used the high groove to pass Hackett
for third. Valone would not relinquish the bottom for Maloy as the final five laps were started. Valone was able to gain a slight lead over Maloy as the white flag flew and led by
several car lengths at the checkers.
Paul
Nelson, the pole sitter, spun on the initial lap of the Spectator feature causing a complete restart of the event. Matt Harvey moved up to the pole sharing the front row with Ryan
Seekings. Once more the leader spun before the first lap was complete. The third restart was successful and Seekings was the leader followed by John Britt. David McClenahan had
problems on lap two for the third caution. Seekings, Britt and Wade Watson were the top three for the lap three restart. Just one more lap was completed when several cars were
collected in turn two including Scott Reeves, Walter Johnson and Nelson. Seekings followed the earlier leaders spinning with five lap complete and collecting several cars in the
incident. Watson became the new leader with Britt second and Gary Fisher third. Once more the restart failed with cars sitting sideways at both ends of the speedway. Buzz
Phearsdorf passed Brigg and Fisher for the second spot on lap seven then fell back to third on lap nine. One lap later Phearsdorf resumed his charge taking the top spot as the
yellow flew for Aron Dascomb and Stan Davis Jr. Watson was second with Fisher third and Britt fourth. Nelson spun on the restart for the ninth yellow. Phearsdorf had nearly a full
straight away led when a lap thirteen spin by Jermin Strickland collected Pat Landy for caution ten. The final two laps were completed under green giving Phearsdorf his second win
of the season.
Quincy
Turner and Scott Gurdak were in row one of the second E-Mod "Double Nickel" feature with first feature winner Randy Hall third and Justin Carlson fourth. Hall made it three wide on
the start but Gurdak led the lap followed by Hall then Turner. Several cars make contact on lap two leaving Tom Hagberg sitting in turn two for the first caution. Gurdak moved up
to the high groove to lead lap three then the yellow flew for Paul Briggs, Dave Lyon and Greg Johnson in turn four. Turner and Hall swapped second twice on the restart then the
yellow flew for Johnson and Paul Briggs. Hall used the restart to gain the top spot relegating Gurdak to second. A smoking Chad Silleman caused the next caution with six laps
complete. The race was for second after the lap six restart. At the half way point Bret Van Guilder brought out the fifth caution and one lap later the sixth flew for Al Crocker.
Nathan Short, Carlson, and Gurdak were all collected as they exited turn four on the restart for caution seven. Turner was now the runner up with Bobby Powell third, Al Cressley
fourth and Hagberg fifth. Andy Sweetland went around in the middle of the pack on lap twelve collecting Chris Couchenour and Van Guilder. Hall led by half a straight away with five
laps remaining. Hall won the event going away making a clean sweep winning every event he entered.
