By Glenn Slocum
Busti, NY: A cool summer evening was the fare for the Tobber Racing Super Sportsman "Double Nickel" at Stateline Speedway. Along with the racing action a fireworks show was
presented by Starfire Fireworks.
Darrell Bossard successfully defended his Super Late
Model King of the Hill title defeating George LaBarbera in the five lap match race. John Boardman came from fourth to win the first of the two Super Sportsman features and Greg
Johnson led just the final lap of the second feature for his first Super Sportsman win. Mike Moore passed rookie Rick Thompson on lap nine for his sixth win of the season. Rich
Gardner led from green to checkers to win his first of the season and tie Rod Maloy for seventh on the all time win list. Scott Gurdak held off Chad Carlson to win his first E-Mod
feature of the season. John Boyd survived several cautions to win his first Spectator feature of the season. Amanda Swanson won the Lady Challenger feature. Brandon Pierce won his
third Super Challenger feature and Sam Courson won his first.
The first
half of the "Double Nickel" was slowed by Chad Carlson at the end of the first lap. Bob Hazzard was the leader with John Boardman in tow. Boardman moved up to challenge Hazzard
just as the yellow flew for Aaron Robinson whose smoking racecar slowed to a stop up against the wall under the flagman. Nine laps were complete and the leaders were Boardman,
Hazzard, Rusty Briggs, and Kelly Frederes. Briggs tried the high side to pass the leaders but caught the fence instead. Frederes stole second from Hazzard and the yellow flew for
Bryan Ester in turn two. The white and green was thrown for the restart and Boardman won the one lap dash to win the first half of the "Double Nickel".
The second
Super Sportsman feature was led to the speedway by Bryan Ester and Hank Francis. Eric Ester and Brent Crandall were in row two with Bob Van Arsdale and Jim Leonard in row three.
Van Arsdale stopped in turn two on the first circuit bringing out the caution before the first lap was in. Eric Ester pulled into the pits during the caution. Francis grabbed the
lead then tagged the wall collecting Steve Kania and Chad Carlson for the second yellow. Jim Leonard was the new leader for lap two with Greg Johnson second and Bob Hazzard third.
Hazzard slowed to a stop on the front stretch for caution three with six laps complete. Leonard retained the lead with Johnson second and Don McGuire third. Leonard stumbled on the
last lap giving Johnson the win with John Boardman the winner of the first feature third.
Rich
Gardner and Rod Maloy were on the front row for the Super Late Model feature. Andy Boozel and Andy Kania were in row two with Randy Lobb and Darrell Bossard. Gardner led the first
circuit as point leader Maloy went to the bottom. Boozel and Randy Lobb ran third and fourth. Gardner went into cruise control in the opening laps with Maloy back about three or
four car lengths. Maloy closed with Gardner on lap ten looking for an opening. A tiny slip by Maloy on lap eleven allowed Gardner to regain a the three or four car lengths as lap
traffic became a factor. With ten laps to go Gardner led Maloy by five car lengths with Boozel a distant third, Bump Hedman fourth and Darrel Bossard fifth. With five to go the gap
between the leaders remained the same. Gardner too the white and tip toed through the final circuit for the his first win of the season and his seventeenth career win at Stateline.
Paul Norman
spun on the second lap of the Outlaw cadet feature as Leonard Enos led. Rick Thompson was second with Kelly Frederes third. Mike Moore started ninth and was third at the end of lap
three. Andy Windrel spun with four laps complete. Thompson charged into the lead on the restart as Enos fell to third behind Moore. Frederes spun for the third yellow. Thompson,
Moore, Enos, Steve Moynihan and John Cline were the restart leaders. Thompson led the next two laps then the yellow flew again for Windrel. Moore passed Thompson on lap nine for
the top spot then one lap later Moynihan grabbed second the broke putting Thompson back into the runner up spot. Norman was able to beat Thompson to the line for the second spot as
Moore won his sixth of the season.
Nathan
Short jumped into the lead of the E-Mod feature at the drop of the green. Scott Gurdak was second with Justin Carlson third. Matt Swanson spun collecting Bran Fardink and Troy
Carr. Short, Gurdak Carlson and Rich Michael were the restart leaders. Short led the fourth circuit then pulled into the infield turning the lead over to Gurdak Michael was the
next victim slowing to a stop on the front stretch and drawing the yellow flag with seven laps complete. Bobby Powell joined Gurdak and Carlson at the front after the restart. A
spin by Tom Hagberg collected Quincy Turner for the third caution with ten complete. On the restart Paul Briggs spun after contact for the fourth caution. Justin Carlson moved up
to challenge Gurdak for the top spot after the restart. Carlson would lead down the back stretch and Gurdak at the line. Carlson faded a little on lap fifteen and Bobby Powell
pulled into the infield putting Chad Ramsey in third. Carlson and Gurdak took the two to go, Carlson led out of two and again Gurdak at the line for the white flag and the duo
repeated the action on the final lap giving Gurdak his first of the season.
A lap one
spin by Matt Harvey caused a complete restart in the Spectator feature. Alex Froman spun collecting several cars including Jamie Brown and Paul Nelson for the second yellow and the
second complete restart. After three attempts the first lap was completed with John Boyd in front. Stan Davis was second with Gary Fisher third and Buzz Phearsdorf fourth. Fisher
nearly spun losing two spots on lap six. The yellow reappeared for a slowing car on lap six and the second place car of Stan Davis pulled into the pits. Dave McClenahan was third
on the restart with Fisher fourth. Aron Dascomb took fourth from Fisher on lap eight. A lap nine spin by Bill Reeves caused caution four. Brown slowed near the pit gate with two
laps remaining for caution five. Dascomb passed a slowing McClenahan for third and Boyd managed to stay in front for his first win.
