May 26th, 2007 - Ron Davies and David Scott Were "Double Nickel" Winners on American Racer/Lias Tire Night At Stateline Speedway

By Glenn Slocum

Busti, NY: A brief shower in mid-afternoon just helped create the perfect race track for the American Racer/Lias Tire "Double Nickel" night. Buzz Phearsdorf won the Spectator features surviving several cautions. Kelly Frederes led the only lap that counts to win his first Outlaw Cadet feature of the season. Bob Hazzard used the back stretch to go three wide for the lead of the Super Sportsman feature and his second win of the season. The first half of the "Double Nickel" was won by David Scott who came from fourth to take the lead on lap two. Scott fended off a hard challenge by Chris Hackett late in the race for the $5,000 dollar win. Ron Davies won the second half of the "Double Nickel" holding off a hard charging Bob Close. The final event of the night was a five lap dash between the two "Double Nickel" winners. Each put up $500 for the race. Scott won the dash by a car length to claim the "Double Nickel" Championship. Jessie Dash led every lap of the first Super Challenger feature for his first of the season and Rick Karash came from eleventh to win the second Challenger feature. Amanda Swanson continued her domination of the Lady Challenger class with her fourth win. Chris Hackett won the Super Late Model King of the Hill. Greg Johnson won a very competitive E-Mod feature.

Twenty-eight of the thirty-four Super Late Models reported to the speedway for the first event of the "Double Nickel". Andy Boozel and Chad Valone were on the front row with Matt Urban and David Scott in row two. Bump Hedman and Chris Hackett were in row three. World of Outlaw start Chub Frank started eleventh, last years Champion Dick Barton started fifteenth and current point leader Rod Maloy was nineteenth. Andy Boozel spun on the initial restart moving Matt Urban up to the pose position for the restart. Valone led David Scott by a nose on the first circuit. Scott was solidly in the lead on lap two. One lap later Scott slipped in turn two allowing Valone to momentarily close, Scott quickly recovered and began to pull away from Valone. Hackett passed Valone on lap six as Scott started to work lap traffic. The yellow flew for Rick Isadore and Paul Briggs with eleven laps complete. Scott, Hackett, Valone, Hedman and Urban were the leaders. Barton was ninth with Frank eleventh. Scott easily controlled the restart with Hackett up against the cushion. The leaders raced side by side for four laps before lap traffic forced Hackett to fall in behind Scott. Barton was up to fifth followed by Bob Close and Chad Ruhlman. Scott took the white flag in heavy lap traffic then the win one lap latter.

Rich Gardner got out of shape coming out of turn two collecting Chub Frank, Frank stopped on the speedway while Gardner continued sending Frank to the rear for the restart. Ron Davies and Rich Gardner started the race once more with Davies leading lap one and David Scott grabbing second from Gardner. At the end of five Davies led Scott by ten car lengths with Bob Close third followed by Chad Ruhlman and Rod Maloy. A multi-car incident collected Chad Valone, Max Blair and Paul Briggs for the second caution one lap later. Briggs left the speedway on the hook, Blair drove to the pits and Valone was able to continue. The next yellow flew for Dick Barton and John Lobb with seven laps complete. Andy Boozel and John Volpe tangled on the restart for the fourth yellow. Davies led by three car lengths with ten laps complete. Matt Urban stopped on the back stretch for caution five just as the battle for the lead was heating up between Davies, Scott, Close and Maloy, twelve laps remained. Close tested Scott after the restart allowing Davies to build a ten car length lead with nine laps remaining. Close made the past and began to run down Davies as Hedman moved up to challenge Scott while Maloy hung in fifth. Doug Eck stopped high in turn four for caution five and five laps remained. Close would not lead Davies bumper as the laps sound down. Close tried a high side pass on the final turn but Davies did not leave him room for the pass. Frank made a last race charge to finish third.

Jamie Brown and Marc Luce were on the front row for the Spectator feature and Brown lost the handle for the first yellow at the end of lap one. Ryan Seekings led on the restart and Rush Firestone was the leader at the end of lap two. The yellow appeared again with three laps complete. Firestone lost the lead briefly ton Travis Swabik and Buzz Phearsdorf then two turns later reclaimed the lead after Swabik and Phearsdorf touched coming out of turn two. Yellow number three happened with seven laps complete for a stalled car on the front stretch. Firestone had troubles turning his racer in the middle of the corners after the restart relinquishing the lead to Phearsdorf. Yellow number four flew for Jim Britt with ten laps in the book. Debris brought out the fifth caution one lap later. Phearsdorf ran the final laps unchallenged for his first of win of the season.

Leonard Enos started on the pole and led the first circuit of the Outlaw Cadet feature with Rick Thompson second. John Cline passed a slowing Thompson for the second spot followed by Kelly Frederes with three laps complete. Mike Moore raced into the fray and on lap twelve passed Cline for the third spot just before the yellow flew for a slowing Paul Norman. With two to go Enos led by a car length and on the white flag lap lost the lead to Frederes.

Rusty Briggs led the first lap of the Super Sportsman feature. The yellow flew for Tim Nocero with two laps complete. Briggs, Don McGuire, Bob Van Arsdale and Jake Eller were the top four for the restart. Eller had mechanical problems shortly after the restart eventually slowing to stop in the infield. John Boardman spun to a stop in turn two for the second yellow with six laps down. Van Arsdale retired during the yellow moving Kelly Frederes into the third spot. Frederes took second from McGuire then had to battle a charging Bob Hazzard. Hazzard made it three wide for the lead with four laps to go and took the spot leading Briggs and Frederes to battle for the second spot. Briggs held off Frederes for second and Hazzard won his second of the season.

Scott Gurdak and Greg Johnson led the E-Mod class onto the speedway for their feature event. Bret Van Guilder brought out the caution before the first lap could be completed. Gurdak and Johnson contested the lead for the first six laps before Johnson gained as solid grip on the top spot. At the halfway mark Johnson had a ten car length advantage with Gurdak in a three way battle for second with Dennis Lunger and Tom Hagberg. Cale Crocker brought out the second caution with six laps remaining allowing the field to close with Johnson. Quincy Turner and Justin Carlson were among the top six for the restart. Gurdak moved up alongside Johnson for the top spot with Hagberg waiting for either to make a mistake. Johnson held on for his first of the season.
