16th, 2008 - Boom Briggs Wins Tobber Racing Super Late Model Feature
Tim Rockwell Crowned Budweiser Spectator King of the Hill
at Stateline Speedway
By Glenn Slocum
Busti, NY: Mother Nature finally cooperated and delivered a perfect racing evening for the Budweiser/Arthur R. Gren and Tobber Racing sponsored events. The Spectator "King
of the Hill" qualifying led off the events and Tim Rockwell took home the title and $1,000 for his efforts.
Joe Rohrer won Spectator feature after Rockwell suffered a flat with five laps remaining.
Chad Carlson led from green to checkers for his fourth win in the Outlaw Cadet feature.
Randy Hall won for the first E-Mod feature for his fifth out of five tries.
Hilyer won her third Lady Challenger feature and
Jessica Hallowell the second.
Jackson II won two of the four Super Challenger feature, Rick Karash and
Bobby Rouche won the others.
Boom Briggs swapped the lead with John Lobb several times in the Super Late Model feature but was out front when the checkers flew for his second win of the season.
Rich Gardner successfully defended his Super Late Model King of the Hill Challenge title defeating Andy Kania in the five lap match race.
Chris Withers won the caution filled Spectator second feature.
Mike Kosinski passed Tim Nocero late in the Super Sportsman feature for his first win of the season.
Justin Carlson won the second E-Mod feature surviving a late race charge by Randy Hall for his first win of the season.
A series of early yellows put Mike Moore near the front of the Outlaw Cadet feature and he led from the first lap for his fourth win of the season.
feature number on saw Jermin Strickland led the first circuit then the yellow flew for Brian Graham spun to a stop coming out of turn two. Tim Rockwell grabbed the lead after the
restart and led lap two then yellow number two happened for Alex Froman the point leader stopped in the exit of turn two. Froman left the speedway on the hook. Rockwell, Stickland
and Joe Rohrer were the restart leaders. The third yellow occurred on lap five for Carl Marcy. Caution four occurred on lap eight as Lee Myers sat facing the wrong direction in
turn four. Rockwell suffered a flat on lap ten turning the lead over to Rohrer and Mike Moon moved to second with John Swabik third. Moon was unable to close with Rohrer giving him
his first win of the season.
Carlson and Greg Fenno led the Outlaw Cadets to the green in their first feature of the night. Carlson quickly built a five car length lead over Fenno with point leader Mike Moore
five lengths behind Fenno. The race stayed green until lap seven when Chet Sheets slowed to a stop in the middle of the back straight. The restart was waived off by started Mark
Matthews but the second was okay. Carlson controlled the restart and Paul Norman moved up to challenge Moore for the third spot. Carlson led by several car lengths with two to go
as did Fenno over Moore and Norman. Norman beat Moore to the line for third and Carlson took checkers number four for the season.
E-Mod feature was brought to the speedway by Scott Gurdak and Chris Couchenour. Randy Hall and Justin Carlson were in row two with Greg Johnson and Dick Barton in row three. Gurdak
won the race to turn one taking the early lead. A heavily smoking Barton stopped trying to gain the pit entrance bringing out the caution with three laps completed. Gurdak,
Carlson, Hall and Couchenour made up the front two rows for the restart. Carlson led lap four putting Gurdak back to second then one lap later Hall beat Gurdak to the line to take
the runner up spot. Ron Seeley brought out the second caution with eight of the twenty laps complete. One lap after the restart Hall passed Carlson to become the new race leader.
Cale Crocker brought out the third caution with fourteen down. One lap later several cars tangled for caution four. Hall brought his smoking ride to line for his fifth win of the
season and Greg Johnson edged Gurdak at the line for third.
John Lobb, Boom Briggs, Andy Kania, Greg Oakes, Mike Knight and Scott Johnson made up the first three rows of the Super Late Model main event. Point leader Rich Gardner started
twelfth and second in points Doug Eck ninth. Eck had troubles on the first lap along with Ryan Scott to bring out the caution before the completion of a lap causing a complete
restart of the event. Everyone made it by the flag stand on the second start with Lobb at the front of the pack. Briggs led lap two and Knight settled into third. Mike Coyle
brought out the second caution with five laps complete. Briggs, Lobb, Knight, Scott Gurdak and Scott Johnson were the restart leaders. Lobb came back to lead lap six and led the
next three before once more losing the lead to Briggs. Knight jumped the cushion in turn four and tagged the wall bringing out caution three with eleven of the twenty-five laps
complete. Lobb swapped the top spot again with Briggs then the yellow flew two laps later for Bump Hedman. Lobb, Briggs, Johnson, Matt Urban and Chris Hackett led at the restart.
Urban passed Johnson for third on lap fifteen and Briggs used the high groove to return as the leader one lap later. Briggs was into lap traffic on lap twenty with fifteen car
length advantage over Lobb. Lobb nearly caught Briggs at the checkers as heavy lap traffic slowed the leader. It was the second win of the season for Briggs.
A lap two
yellow slowed the second Spectator feature with Tim Rockwell the leading. Chris Withers was second followed by John Swabik, Joe Rohrer and Alex Froman. The yellow reappeared
immediately after the green for Jordan John. Withers moved up alongside Rockwell after the restart and led lap four just before a yellow for John Mease and Jim Tucker. Kevin Golden
had problems on the restart for yellow number four. Just one more lap was complete before the fifth yellow for John Kelsey, then yellow six on the restart, yellow seven on the next
restart and eight on the next, nine on the next. Withers led lap eight and nine then the tenth caution flew for Dave McClanahan. The eleventh yellow flew with the checkers on lap
twelve giving Withers his second of the season.
Watson, Jake Eller and Steve Kania were the first three across the line on the first lap of the Super Sportsman feature. A lap two caution slowed the race. The second yellow flew
on the restart. Kania led lap two with Watson second and Ben Burgess third. Burgess spun collecting Eller and Ben Reed for yellow number three. It was three wide after the restart
but Kania held on to the lead. Tim Nocero was second followed by Watson. Yellow four fell and Kania lost out on the restart slipping to third as Nocero and Mike Kosinski both got
by. The fifth yellow flew for Bob Hazzard with seven laps complete. Kosinski passed Nocero for the lead just before the two to go signal and ran the final three laps unchallenged
for his first of the season.
Short was the early leader in the second E-Mod feature with Chris Couchenour second, Chuck Frye third and Justin Carlson fourth. A caution on lap one, one on lap two and another on
lap three slowed the event. Carlson took the lead from Short on the lap three restart. At the half way point Carlson led by nearly a full straight away. With thirteen laps complete
the yellow flew for Andy Sweetland. Carlson, Short, Greg Johnson, Jason Genco, Chad Silleman and Randy Hall, from his twenty second starting spot, were the restart leaders. Short
used the low groove to lead lap fourteen then spun on lap fifteen for the fifth yellow. Carlson, Johnson, Genco, Hall and Silleman were the leaders. Hall was second with two laps
remaining five car lengths behind Carlson. Hall climbed the fence on the last lap but recovered enough to finish third behind Carlson and Johnson.
The first lap of the
second Outlaw Cadet feature was also marred by a caution. Mike Lozowski and Troy Dorman were the leaders. Lozowski spun on the restart for the second caution putting Paul Himes in
the lead with Dorman second and Mike Moore third. Moore led the first complete lap with Himes second and Dorman third. Greg Fenno moved in to second with four lap complete followed
by John Cline in third. Moore ran the final laps unchallenged for his fourth of the season.
