August 30th,
2008 - Rich Gardner Wins Inaugural Lloyd Moore Memorial
at Stateline Speedway
By Glenn Slocum
Busti, NY: Thirty-four Super Late Models were on hand for the first Roberts Trucking Parmenter Excavating Lias Tire Lloyd Moore Memorial race. Mother Nature came through
with perfect racing weather for the 30 lap event. Rich Gardner powered by early leader Dave Scott on lap eleven as Scott was fending off Doug Eck in the low groove. Gardner
mastered the heavy lap traffic for his first win of the season.
Matt Urban
ended the Scott Gurdak reign as Super Late Model King of the Hill Challenge Champion in a closely contested race which ended with Urban a car length ahead of Gurdak.
The five lap Buccola Battle between Joe Jr. and Joe Sr. was won by
Joe Jr.
Tim Rockwell won his first Spectator feature surviving several restart in the caution filled event.
Bob Hazzard led from the initial green to win his second Super Sportsman feature of the season.
Scott Gurdak passed Nathan Short in the late stages of the E-Mod feature for his fifth of the season.
Paul Norman Jr. was in position to take advantage when leader Kelly Frederes slipped in the Outlaw Cadet feature for his first win of the season.
Stephanie
Hilyer came from sixth to win her fourth Lady Challenger feature.
Jamie Hebner won the
first Super Challenger feature and
Steve Keith Jr. the second.
Andy Kania
started on the pole of the Super Late Model Consolation race. Eleven of the fourteen scheduled to start took the green. A spin by Dave Lyon with two of the ten laps complete slowed
the event. Kania and George LaBarbera were the leaders. Chris Hackett charged into second on the restart then Steve Halpainy and John Volpe tangled in the exit of turn two for the
second yellow with three laps complete. At the half way mark Hackett led by a nose and Bump Hedman was fourth the last qualifying spot. Hackett just nipped Kania at the line for
the win with Hedman third and LaBarbera fourth.
Dave
McClenahan led the first circuit of the Spectator feature. A lap two spin by Kevin Hill caused the first caution. Tim Rockwell used the restart to jump into the second spot then
one lap later took the lead as the yellow flew for a tangle in turn two. McClenahan was placed back in front with Rockwell second and Alex Froman third. McClenahan pulled into the
pits during the caution giving Rockwell the top spot. McClenahan returned to the speedway before the restart but had to start at the tail. Rockwell and Froman began to quickly out
distance the field after the restart with Brandon Pierce a several car lengths back in third. The third yellow appeared with five laps complete for Jermin Strickland stalled on the
front stretch. Rockwell once more controlled the restart and led Froman by several car lengths at the crossed flags. Skip Jackson and Matt Harvey tangled for caution four on lap
eight. Two laps later a spin by Mike Moon brought out the fifth caution. Bob Vogt Jr. was hit from behind then spun to stop for the final caution with one lap remaining. Rockwell
easily won the race for his first win of the season.
Wade Watson
spun on the initial start of the Super Sportsman feature necessitating a complete restart. Bob Hazzard took the early lead with Ben Reed second. Debris on the speedway bought out
the caution with five laps complete. Hazzard, Reed, John Boardman, Ben Burgess and Joe Buccola Jr. were the restart leaders. Reed lost two spot on the restart giving Boardman
second and Buccola third. With five laps remaining Hazzard led Boardman and Buccola by several car lengths. Hazzard finished in front for his second checkers of the season.
Dave Scott
and Doug Eck made up the Lloyd Moore Super Late Model Memorial front row with Jason Dupont and Rich Gardner in row two. Greg Oakes and Andy Boozel were in row three. Scott led
after the first circuit with Eck way up on the cushion in second. John Lobb stopped with three laps complete for the first caution. Scott, Eck, Dupont, Gardner and Scott Johnson
were the top five for the lap four restart. Starter Mark Matthews waived of the first attempted restart and took the second. Dupont got crossed up on the restart for caution two
which also saw Mike Bihler and Bruce Hordusky collected in the incident. Merle Terry looped in turn two with four complete for the third caution. Scott remained on the inside of
the speedway as Eck rode the cushion after the restart. Scott was able to slowly pull away from Eck. Bump Headman was the next to have problems with a turn one spin with eight of
the thirty laps complete for caution four. Eck moved to the bottom after the restart opening the top for Gardner who quickly took advantage to become the new leader on lap eleven.
Scott stayed with Gardner as Eck fell to a distant third. Eck continued his slide turning third over to Oakes just past the half way mark. A smoking Adam Ferri pulled into the pits
on lap twenty and the race remained green. Gardner entered lap traffic on lap twenty-two several car lengths ahead of the second place Scott. Oakes passed Scott in traffic to
briefly hold the second spot but Scott regained it one lap later. Gardner cruised through heavy lap traffic to win the inaugural memorial event reinforcing his point lead and
getting his first win of the season and his eighteenth career win at Stateline.
A spin by
Stu Burton marred the start of the E-Mod feature. Nathan Short and Greg Johnson were on the front row with Jason Genco and Scott Gurdak in row two. A three car incident on the next
attempted start brought out yellow number two. The third start worked but two laps later the caution flew for Justin Carlson stopped in the pit entrance. A four car incident before
the green fell on the next restart caused caution four with just two laps complete. Short led lap three then the fifth yellow flew for Chuck Hart who had made hard contact with the
front stretch wall. Short, Gurdak, Johnson, Genco and Mike Munsee were the leaders. Three laps later a caution flew for a stalled car the sixth yellow, followed quickly by caution
number seven. One lap later caution number eight. A slow moving Chuck Frye caused caution nine after four laps of green flag racing. Short maintained the lead with Gurdak and
Johnson right on his bumper. Munsee was fourth with Cale Crocker fifth and point leader Carlson sixth. Short remained in the middle of the speedway and lost the lead to Gurdak on
the top on lap fourteen. Gurdak stretched his lead as both Short and Johnson faded. Gurdak kept his advantage through the final laps for his second win in a row and his fifth of
the season.
Chet Sheets went from
third to first on the initial lap of the Outlaw Cadet feature. A three call tangle stopped the race after lap two involving Troy Dorman, Chad Carlson and Brian Crandall. Brian
Emory brought the second caution right after the restart. Paul Himes was the next with a spin with three laps complete. Emory and Himes tangled on the restart for caution four.
Kelly Frederes led lap four as Sheets began to fade. Paul Norman was second with Glen Slaney third and Mike Moore fourth. Steve Moynihan stopped on the back stretch with nine laps
complete for the caution five. Frederes, Norman, Slaney, Sheets and John Cline were the restart leaders. Frederes nearly spun coming to the two to go signal losing two spots
turning the lead over to Norman. Norman held on through the final two laps for his first win of the season.
