By Glenn Slocum
Busti, NY: Back to the 60’s Night sponsored by Arthur R Gren Budweiser and Tobber Racing saw a mixture of clouds and sunshine with thunderstorms passing on both sides of the
speedway.
The Outlaw Cadet King of the Hill featured Greg Fenno and Chad Carlson in the final round with Carlson coming from behind for the win.
Joe Buccola Jr. won the first Tobber Racing "Double Nickel" feature event for the Super Sportsman division.
John Lobb led from lap two holding off a late race charge by Chris Hackett to win the Super Late Model feature. It was Lobb’s first win of the season.
Ben Reed won the rain shortened second "Double Nickel" feature as Mother Nature once more stopped the racing events.
The first
of the two Double Nickel features for the Super Sportsman had Steve Kania and Kelly Frederes on the front row. Kania won the race to turn one and led the first circuit with John
Boardman second and Frederes third. Kania lost two spots on lap three and four and Joe Buccola Jr. became the new leader. Kania lost the handle on lap five and caused the first
caution of the event. Buccola, Boardman, Frederes, Don McGuire and Wade Watson were the restart leaders. Frederes passed Boardman on the restart for the runner up spot. Boardman
nearly spun on lap twelve losing a spot. At the two to go signal Frederes was alongside Buccola then the yellow flew for Watson tagged the wall in turn one. Buccola held on for the
win his second of the season.
Scott Gurdak and John Lobb made up the front row for the Super Late Model feature with Darrell Bossard and Rich Gardner in row two and Andy Boozel and Chris Hackett in row
three. Twenty-eight racers reported for the event. Gurdak and Lobb were dead even at the end of the first circuit. Lobb had car length on Gurdak on lap two and began to build a
lead as Gurdak battled Hackett for second. Jason Dupont was third, Matt Urban fourth and Gardner fifth. Gurdak lost several spot over the next five laps and Lobb had caught the
tail end of the field just before he yellow flew for John Volpe facing the wrong was coming out of turn four. Lobb, Hackett, Dupont, Urban and Gurdak were the top five for the lap
eleven restart. The yellow flew for Mike Knight stopped against the fence in turn four with thirteen in the books. Twenty-five remained for the restart with Lobb, Hackett, Dupont,
Scott Johnson and Gurdak the leaders. Lobb was up against the fence and Hackett in the middle of the speedway with ten laps remaining. Hackett moved up behind Lobb for the final
five circuits as they began to encounter lap traffic. Hackett began to press Lobb with two to go but could not muster the speed to make the pass. Lobb finished two car lengths
ahead of Hackett. Dupont had problems in turn four on the final lap causing the yellow and checkers to fall together.
Ben Reed started on the pole and led the first lap of the second "Double Nickel" feature for the Super Sportsman division. Bob Hazzard was second with Bob Van Arsdale third. The
first yellow appeared with eight laps complete for Wade Watson stopped in turn two. Before the race could be restarted heavy rain ended the night’s events and the race was
considered complete just past the half way mark with Ben Reed getting his first win of the season.
