July 19th, 2008 - Chad Ruhlman Wins Neilís Propane Independent Racing Series Super Late Model 50 at Stateline Speedway
By Glenn Slocum

Busti, NY: A light shower at start time delayed the start of the Neilís Propane sponsored events but a short hot lap session for the E-Mods was followed by their make-up feature from last week which was handily won by Al Cresley. A short hot lap session followed for the IRS Super Late Models.

Tyler Green inherited the lead from Zachary Downes then controlled the remaining laps of the Spectator make-up feature for his second win of the season.

Rich Michael Jr. won his first E-Mod feature of the season.

Time trials were dropped because of the early rain so pill draw aligned the Super Late Models for the four IRS heat races where the top four would qualify for the 40 lap feature.

John Boardman won his fourth Super Challenger feature passing early leader Ben Burgess.

Robbie Blair won the IRS four lap dash to earn the pole position in the main event. Dutch Davies was second with brother Ron third and Wally Fox fourth. Jason Dupont won the first IRS Consolation event and John Lobb won the second to set the starting field.

Mike Moon won the second Spectator feature for his first of the second.

Chad Ruhlman and Robbie Blair battled the entire fifty laps of the IRS feature with Ruhlman winning by a nose over the IRS point leader. It was the sixteenth feature win at Stateline for Ruhlman.

John Swabik won the third Spectator feature.

Glen Slaney won his second Outlaw Cadet feature in a caution filled event.

Stephanie Hilyer won her second Lady Challenger feature.

Kyle Jackson lost the first Super Challenger race at the finish line to Rick Karash and Steve Keith Jr. returned to victory lane in the second Super Challenger feature.

Robbie Blair, Dutch Davies, Ron Davies, Wally Fox and David Scott were the top five for the Neilís Propane 50. Twenty-eight cars were on the starting grid and after touring four wide they prepared for the start. Randy Lobb spun to a stop in turn one on the initial start causing a complete restart of the event. Dutch Davies just barley led the first circuit. Merle Terry had problems with two laps complete for the second caution in as many laps. Dutch Davies, Blair, Chad Ruhlman, Ron Davies and Scott were the leaders. A quick yellow for John Lobb happened on the restart. Bumping and banging on the restart caught up Doug Eck and Dick Barton sending them to the tail of the field. Eck remained for the restart while Barton went to the pits. Dutch Davies remained in the top spot with Blair constantly along side and Ruhlman a close third. Scott was fourth several car lengths behind Ruhlman. Blair led lap eight by the slimmest margin then once in front pulled away from Dutch Davies who then lost second to Ruhlman on lap ten. It took Ruhlman just tow laps to catch Blair and take the top spot away. Ruhlman slowed on the exit of turn two on lap fourteen and Blair regained the top spot only to lose it again to Ruhlman one lap later. Ruhlman was in heavy lap traffic nearing the half way mark and pulling away from Blair. Dutch Davies was a distant third. Andy Kania brought out the next yellow with twenty-three laps complete allowing the field to close with Ruhlman. Twenty-four of the starters remained. Ruhlman returned to the top on the restart while Blair used the bottom. Chris Hackett was fourth just four laps after the restart pressing Scott for the third spot. Ruhlman had clear sailing for several laps finally catching the back markers on lap thirty-three to once again fight through the lap traffic. The next ten laps were all Ruhlman and lap traffic until the yellow flew for a slowing Eck with forty-one of the fifty laps complete. The single file restart took up half the speedway. Blair was alongside Ruhlman on laps forty-two and three but Ruhlman was able to finally get t three car length advantage with five laps remaining. Fox and Jason Dupont tangled in turn three setting up a five lap dash for the win. Ruhlman, Blair, Hackett, David Scott, Rich Gardner, Chad Valone, Ron Davies, Mike Knight, Ryan Scott and Dutch Davies were the top ten for the lap forty-six restart. Ruhlman nearly gave Blair the lead with two remaining but hung on then on the final lap they exited turn four nearly even with Ruhlman winning by a nose.

The E-Mods were first on the track with their make-up feature event. Al Cresley led by several car lengths on the first circuit as the rest of the field quickly went single file. Nate Short was second with Greg Johnson third and Jason Genco fourth. With six down Cresley maintained his advantage and Greg Johnson was pressing Short for the runner up spot. Lap traffic slowed the leader briefly on lap nine allowing Short and Johnson to close then the traffic cleared and Cresley regained his lead. The race remained green and with five laps to go Cressley had nearly a straight away lead over Short. The final five laps remained in Cresleyís control as he notched his first win of the season.

The second make-up feature was for the Spectators with Zachary Downes leading the first circuit followed by a yellow on lap two. The second yellow appeared with four laps complete. Buzz Phearsdorf and Jamie Brown brought out the third caution just one lap later. During the yellow Downes was forced to pit with a flat tire turning the lead over to Tyler Green with David McClenahan in second. Aron Dascomb began a charge to the front grabbing third with eight laps complete form his 20th starting spot. Dascomb took second from McClenahan on lap ten and began tracking the leader down. The fourth yellow occurred with twelve of the fifteen laps complete as two cars were stalled trying to exit the track. Green, Dascomb, McClenahan, Alex Froman and Chad Schauers were the top five for the restart. A smoking Brandon Groters grabbed second from McClenahan on the white flag lap then tangled with an out of shape Dascomb forcing both to lose a couple of spots as Green went on to win the event.

Qualifying heats were dropped for the E-Mods and the feature was lined up by pill draw for the 28 E-Mods on hand. Chuck Frye and Chris Couchenour were on the front row with Justin Carlson and Jason Genco in row two. In the first corner Frye nearly lost the handle giving Couchenour the lead with Genco second and Carlson third. Tom Hagberg took third from Carlson on lap four then gave it back one lap later. The first yellow appeared with eight laps complete. Genco was alongside Couchenour on the restart lap but the yellow flew for Mike Munsee and Justin Tatlow. The yellow returned with out a lap complete as several cars had trouble exiting turn four on the restart. Carlson lost third to Rich Michael Jr. on lap ten then two laps later Genco used the outside to lead a the line on lap thirteen. Lap fourteen the leaders were nearly three abreast then Michaels and Genco make contact ending with Genco nosed into the turn two fence. Genco pulled in front of Michaels during the yellow and was black flagged. Michaels passed Couchenour one lap after the restart a cruised to his first win of the season at Stateline with point leader Justin Carlson second and Couchenour third.

Ben Burgess and John Boardman were side by side for the lead at the end of the first lap of the Super Sportsman feature. Spins by Wade Watson and Bob Van Arsdale brought out the yellow with two laps complete. Boardman won the race to turn one on the restart to lead lap three with Burgess second followed by Joe Buccola Jr., Dan Nocero and Steve Kania. Boardman could not shake Burgess as the laps wound down but Burgess could not make the pass giving Boardman his fourth win of the season.

The second Spectator feature was brought to the line by Byron Johnson and Tiny Larson. Johnson was on top at the end of one then the yellow flew for several cars in lap two. When the track cleared Johnson was still the leader with Stan Davis Jr. second and Mike Moon third. Davis was the first back to the finish line with Moon second. Moon passed Davis on lap four to take over the lead. The second yellow occurred with five laps complete for the early leader Johnson stopped up against the turn four wall. Buzz Phearsdorf passed Davis for second immediately after the restart then the third yellow occurred for a multi-car incident in turn one. Phearsdorf lost second to Aron Dascomb on the restart. Then a tangle in turn four with eight laps complete brought out the fourth yellow. Dascomb nearly spun on lap nine sending Phearsdorf to second and Kevin Golden to third. Yellow five happened with eleven laps down then number six on the restart with five cars involved. Moon led lap twelve and thirteen by a nose then yellow seven flew. Moon led by a car length on the white flag lap and the checkers for his first win of the season.

The Jermin Strickland jumped to the early lead in the third Spectator feature then tangled with several cars after a lap two restart. Joe Rohrer was the new leader with Matt Harvey second and Jessup Baker third. Harvey spun but did not stop on the restart sending John Swabik to second as Rohrer lead. A caution for Lee Myers with four complete slowed the event. Swabik took the lead from Rohrer on lap five. A lap six yellow by Meyers slowed the event. The final laps were controlled by Swabik for his first win of the season.

Paul Himes led the first lap of the Outlaw Cadet feature. Lap two ended with a yellow as did the lap two restart. Leonard Enos led the second lap with Himes second then the third yellow occurred. Glen Slaney and Paul Norman took over second and third after the restart as Enos led. Slaney beat Enos out of turn four on lap five to become the new leader leaving Enos and Norman to contest the second spot. Chris Ottaway was one of several cars to tangle in turn two with eight laps complete, then one lap later Ottaway and John Cline brought out the caution. Slaney, Norman and Mike Moore were the restart leaders. A last lap caution by Enos gave Norman one more chance to beat Slaney. Slaney won the event as the checkers and the yellow flew together.

Jessica Hallowell started third but still led the first lap of the Lady Challenger feature. Stephanie Hilyer passed Hallowell on lap four then Hallowell slowed to a stop bringing out the caution with four laps complete. Hilyer survived two more cautions to win her second of the season.
