at Stateline Speedway
By Glenn Slocum
Busti, NY: Mother Nature delivered a perfect summer race night for the Gary Ottaway Outlaw Cadet Double Nickel Memorial event sponsored by Ottaway NAPA. The Super Late
Models qualified using single elimination match races to determine the feature lineup and the 2008 Super Late Model Budweiser King of the Hill. Twenty-eight Super Late Models were
on-hand for the Arthur R Gren King of the Hill where Chad Ruhlman lost the title to Chris Hackett. Chad Carlson started second but finished first to take the first of the Double
Nickel Outlaw Cadet features holding off a late race charge by pole sitter Kelly Frederes. Elaine Best won the Lady Challenger feature.
Super
Late Model driver Doug Eck beat Scott Gurdak in his E-Mod in the Special King of the Hill Challenge and
Chad Valone beat Jason Dupont in the regular King of
the Hill Challenge after Dupont suffered engine problems. Aron Dascomb won the Spectator feature on the final turn as long time leader John Kelsey nearly spun in the caution filled
event. Chris Hackett continued his win streak beating Doug Eck on the final lap of the Super Late Model feature for his first win of the season.
Scott Perrin
won the first Super Challenger feature and
Travis Darling won the second. Jim Leonard led every
lap of the Super Sportsman feature for his first of the season. Mike Moore won the final Outlaw Cadet Double Nickel event passing Steve Moynihan on lap eight of the fifteen lap
event.
Kelly Frederes and Chad Carlson led the Outlaw Cadets on to the speedway for the first Outlaw Cadet feature. Frederes led Carlson by two car lengths after the first circuit then
trialed Carlson by a car length at the end of the second. Carlson had a fifteen car length lead at the end of five laps with Frederes still second and Glen Slaney third. The first
yellow flew for Mike Beatman slowing on the backstretch with eight of the fifteen laps complete. Frederes was able to stay with Carlson after the restart. The second yellow
appeared with ten complete. Frederes moved up along side Carlson as the two to go signal was given then trailed Carlson for the white. Carlson held on beating Frederes by a car
length at the checkers.
Buzz
Phearsdorf and Zachery Downes brought out the caution on lap one of the Spectator feature then another yellow flew for Josh Pike on the restart. Chad Schauers and David McClenahan
brought the field around for the third attempted start with twenty-two of the twenty-six starters still on the speedway. McClenahan led the first full circuit and the second before
the yellow flew for several cars tangled in turn two. Caution number four occurred on the restart for Skip Joslyn. McClenahan led lap three with Gary Fisher, John Kelsey and James
Britt three wide for second. Fisher hit the backstretch wall for caution five with just three laps complete. Caution six for Matt Harvey after contact with Mike Moon. Caution six
occurred on the restart. Kelsey led lap six then caution seven occurred for Jamie Brown. Kelsey, Alex Froman, McClenahan, Aron Dascomb and Moon were the restart leaders. Caution
eight occurred one lap later and then the ninth caution with ten complete. Brown brought out the tenth caution with eleven laps complete and twelve cars remaining. Kelsey nearly
spun on the final lap allowing Aron Dascomb to win the event with Froman second.
Matt Urban and Chad Ruhlman were on the front row for the twenty-five lap Super Late Model feature. Urban led the first circuit with Hackett second. Chad Ruhlman brought out the
first yellow with a spin in turn two on the second lap. Urban, Hackett, Darrell Bossard, Andy Boozel and Doug Eck were the restart leaders. On the restart the caution appeared for
George LaBarbera then several car tangled in turn two but only LaBarbera was charged with the caution. Bump Hedman stopped coming out of turn two for caution three. Hackett and
Urban ran side by side for lap two then Hackett led lap three. Eck moved up to challenge Hackett as Urban faded to third then fourth. Eck beat Hackett to the flag to lead lap six
and the yellow flew for Scott Gurdak stalled in the pit entrance with eight laps complete. Eck, Hackett, Rich Gardner, Darrell Bossard and Urban were the top five for the lap nine
restart. Hackett tested Eck on the restart but Eck remained the leader. Darrell Bossard, running fourth, pulled into the infield on lap twelve as Rod Maloy moved into the top five
and Gardner passed Hackett for the second spot. Eleven laps remained with twenty-two of the original twenty-nine racers remaining. Eck led with Hackett and Gardner tied for second.
Hackett stayed high with Eck in the low groove. A lap nineteen spin by John Volpe for caution five forced a single file restart before the six remaining laps. Eck, Hackett,
Gardner, Maloy and Urban were the leaders. Two more laps were put into the books before caution six for Randy Lobb in turn two. Adam Ferri moved into the top five on the restart
and Hackett was able to catch Eck. Hackett was along side Eck under the white then made the pass down the backstretch on the final lap for his first win of the season.
Jim Leonard
was the early Super Sportsman feature race leader with Wade Watson second and Chris Kuschel third. Bob Van Arsdale spun in turn one for the first and only yellow with seven laps
completed. With five laps remaining Leonard had a twenty car length advantage over Watson. Leonard easily won the event for his first of the season.
Several
cars were bumping and banging on the initial start of the E-Mod feature including race leaders Kyle Bedell and Greg Johnson. The yellow appeared as the first lap ended. Johnson
edged Bedell at the end of lap three and Rich Michael did the same one lap later. A multi-car incident in turn one on lap six sent several cars to the pits. Johnson, Michael,
Bedell, Justin Carlson and Tom Hagberg were the leaders. Johnson and Michael swapped the lead over the next two laps then the yellow flew for fourth running Carlson, collecting
several other cars in the yellow. The top three remained the same for the restart with Hagberg now fourth and from his thirteenth starting spot Dave Lyon fifth. Two laps later
Scott Gurdak made an appearance in the top five and the yellow flew again. With nine laps complete the fifth caution occurred. Just past half way another yellow slowed the event.
Michael passed Johnson on the backstretch but the yellow flew again and Michael was aligned in the second spot for the restart. Gurdak was third with Bedell fourth and Hagberg
fifth. Michael spun with seven laps remaining relinquishing the second spot to Gurdak. Lyon was third, Hagberg fourth and Ron Seeley fifth. Gurdak caught Johnson with four laps
remaining and just nipped Johnson at the finish for his second of the season.
The last
race of the evening was the final half of the Ottaway Double Nickel for the Outlaw Cadets. A lap two caution for Mike Beatman slowed the event as John Cline led. Chris Ottaway lost
the handle on lap three for the second caution just after Brian Crandall moved into the top spot. Crandall spun on lap five leaving Moynihan the leader with Mike Moore second and
Paul Briggs third. Moynihan was just able to hold the lead with Moore second. Moore made the pass on lap eight with Glen Slaney moving up to challenge Moynihan for second. Slaney
was second on lap eleven as Moore led by three car lengths. The white flag was followed by the yellow setting up a one lap dash for the win. Moore won the dash and his third
feature of the season.
