Randy Lobb
Super Late Model Winner
At Stateline Speedway
By Glenn Slocum
Busti, NY: Magnum Graf-X and Finn’s Auto Sales and Service sponsored the E-Mod Double Nickel events at Stateline Speedway. Twenty-six E-Mods were on hand for the double
events. Tom Hagberg led all but the first lap of the first half of the Double Nickel surviving several cautions in the twenty lap race.
Chad Valone
regained his Super Late Model King of the Hill Challenge title defeating Bump Hedman in the five lap match race.
The Stateline "Two" seater saw plenty of action with first George and Barb LaBarbera running a few laps in Outlaw Cadet heat number two and then Wally Fox and daughter Anita ran
a few hot laps.
John Kelsey passed early leader Mike Moon with three laps remaining for his first Spectator win of the season.
John Boardman won his third Super Sportsman feature.
Randy Lobb won a hotly contested battle with last weeks feature winner Doug Eck to notch his first Super Late Model win of the season.
Nathan Short won the second half of the E-Mod special nipping Justin Carlson at the line. A three lap dash between the two "Double Nickel" winners was won by Tom Hagberg.
Chad Carlson won the Outlaw Cadet feature from his eighth starting spot.
Stephanie
Devereaux won the Lady Challenger feature.
Travis Darling was awarded the first Super Challenger win and
Dillon Titus the second.
Tom Hagberg and Vic Vena made up the front row for the first E-Mod Double Nickel feature. David Lyon and Jason Genco were in row two with Joe Weber and Carl McKinney in row
three. Vena led Hagberg by a car length at the end of lap one then three cars tangled in lap two for an early caution. Hagberg was able to beat Vena into turn one on the restart to
lead lap two. Dave Lyon was third with Jason Genco fourth. Four more cars tangled on lap four for the second caution of the event. Hagberg, Lyon and Vena made it three wide on the
restart but Hagberg remained the leader. Genco lost two spots as Jack Young and Justin Carlson grabbed fourth and fifth. With eight laps complete the third yellow appeared for a
twin spin in turn one. The restart leaders were Hagberg, Vena, Lyon, Young and Carlson. One lap after the restart the fourth yellow, Wayne Anderson, Dana Wellington and Chuck Hart
were involved. Lyon and Vena waged a fierce battle for the second spot for the next three laps then Greg Johnson slowed causing caution five with nine laps remaining. Hagberg
continued to run the high line giving Vena and Lyon the bottom but neither could best him. The seventh yellow flew for Brian Fardink, Kyle Scott and Andy Sweetland. Vena nearly
jumped the next restart but Hagberg prevailed with six laps to go. Yellow number eight for Rick Loomis and Hart occurred with just three laps remaining. The drivers did not stay in
single file for the restart forcing head starter Mark Matthews to throw the green then the yellow. Hagberg could not be passed giving him the first E-Mod feature win on the evening
and his first in 2008.
Ryan
Seekings led the first circuit of the Spectator feature. Mike Moon quickly moved to second from his sixth starting spot. Twin spins caused the first caution with four laps
complete. Twenty-seven of the thirty-two starters remained for the lap five restart. First Gary Fisher slowed in turn two then four cars tangled in turn four including Anthony
Marotto and Chad Schauers for the second yellow before another lap could be completed. Moon, Seekings and John Kelsey were the leaders after the restart. Stan Davis Jr. lost the
handle collecting Tyler Green for the third yellow with nine laps complete. Kelsey pushed Seekings high on the next circuit allowing Aron Dascomb to take third and Kelsey second.
Green had more troubles bringing out the fourth yellow with Brandon Pierce. Moon, Kelsey, Dascomb, Alex Froman and Jermin Strickland were the top five for the restart with three
laps remaining. Moon got a little wide in thru four on the restart lap allowing Kelsey the bottom and the lead on the next lap. Davis slowed to a stop in turn one for caution five
setting up a two lap dash for the win. Kevin Golden slid into the infield on the restart but the green stayed out. Kelsey survived a white flag charge by Moon for his first win of
the year.
Jim Leonard
was the early leader then pulled into the pits on the yellow for Ben Reed on lap two. Ben Burgess led for the restart but John Boardman was the first into turn one. Just before the
lap ended Reed brought out the second yellow. Hank Francis nosed into the turn two fence for caution three on the next restart. Wade Watson made hard contact with the turn four
concrete at the drop of the green for caution four, still with just one lap complete. Lap two was finally completed with Boardman the leader and Dan Nocero second. Kelly Frederes
ran third followed by Burgess a distant fourth. The race settled down after the rocky start running several laps under green until a spin by Reed brought out the fifth caution.
Boardman and Nocero ran nose to tail until the final lap when Nocero made an unsuccessful attempt to get under Boardman.
Last weeks feature winner Doug Eck along with Dan Maxim brought the Super Late Models out for their feature event. Maxim had problems in the first turn collecting Matt Urban
for the first caution before the first lap was complete. The second start worked as Eck led the first circuit. Greg Johnson stopped for the second caution. Eck, Randy Lobb, Bump
Hedman, John Lobb and Chris Hackett were the restart leaders. It was three wide for second on the restart with Randy Lobb the winner and brother John third and Hedman fourth. Randy
Lobb passed Eck on the next circuit to lead lap five. Hackett, Hedman and Mike Knight touched while contesting the fourth spot bringing out the third caution with eight laps
complete. Hackett pulled off with mechanical problems after the restart stopping in the pit entrance for caution four. Randy Lobb remained the race leader after the restart with
Eck trailing by five car lengths with ten laps to go. Mike Knight passed John Lob for third on lap fifteen then Eck on lap sixteen just before the yellow flew for Johnson in turn
three. Eck rejoined the battle for the lead on the restart and led lap nineteen followed by a spin by Knight in turn one for the sixth caution. Eck slowed on the exit of turn two
losing the lead to Randy Lobb on back stretch but regaining it at the finish line. Randy Lobb continued his quest regaining the lead with three laps to go and taking the checkers
with three car lengths over Eck.
Twenty-two E-Mods reported to the speedway for the second "Double Nickel" feature. Nate Short was on the pole and led the first lap followed by Shane Crotty. The yellow flew
on lap three for Brett Van Guilder. Carl McKinney, Vic Vena and Kyle Scott brought out the second yellow. Al Crocker moved into second after the restart as Short remained on the
point. Jason Genco was third with Chris Couchenour fourth and Crotty fifth. Crocker moved under Short on lap six but could not make the pass. The top three began to out distant the
remaining cars and had nearly a straight away lead at the half way mark. Mechanical problems caused Chuck Hart to spin for the third yellow and a spin by Dave Lyon on the restart
caused the fourth. Short, Crocker, Genco, Couchenour and Justin Carlson were the top five. Carlson was third one lap after the restart. The fifth yellow for Dana Wellington and
Scott slowed the race with eight laps remaining. Carlson bested Crocker for the runner up spot on lap fifteen as Short led. With two to go Short led Carlson by three car lengths as
they both ran the high groove. The final yellow of the event occurred on the white flag lap. Short, Carlson, Crocker, Genco and the first "Double Nickel" feature winner Tom Hagberg
was in the fifth spot. Short just barely held off Carlson at the finish for the win.
Paul Himes led the first
lap of the Outlaw Cadet feature, lap two was slowed by an early caution. Himes, Chad Carlson from his eighth starting spot, Chris Ottaway from sixth and Kelly Frederes from tenth
were the restart leaders. Carlson led lap two as Himes and Frederes contested the second spot. Frederes was scored in the second spot after lap three just before the second yellow
for Steve Moynihan with mechanical problems. Leonard Enos brought out the yellow after the restart with Everett Enos and Brian Crandall spinning after the yellow appeared. Frederes
passed Carlson on the restart lap with Troy Dorman third. Dorman slowed on lap six allowing point leader Mike Moore and Paul Norman by. Carlson battled back to take the lead from
Frederes at the half way point and Ottaway moved to fifth behind Norman. With two laps remaining Carlson led Frederes by several car lengths and Moore was a distant third. Carlson
led the final two for his first checkers of the season.
