May 31st, 2008 - Doug Eck Wins Smirnoff Super Late Model Feature
Kelly Frederes Repeats as Super Sportsman King of the Hill at Stateline Speedway

By Glenn Slocum

Busti, NY: The rain was a no show at Stateline Speedway for the Smirnoff and Arthur R. Gren sponsored Super Sportsman King of the Hill. All of the E-Mods and Super Late Models circled the track in remembrance of E-Mod driver Quincy Turner and Super Late Model driver Dick Litz. Kelly Frederes successfully defended his King of the Hill title defeating Wade Watson in the final round. Bump Hedman won the Super Late Model King of the Hill Challenge match race defeating Chad Valone who had held the title for several weeks. The leaders tangled near the end of the Spectator feature giving Kevin Golden the chance he was waiting for and his first win in the division. Glen Slaney passed Brian Crandall on the white flag lap to win his first Outlaw Cadet feature of the season. Randy Hall made his fourth appearance at Stateline Speedway and took his fourth E-Mod feature. Hall donated his winnings to the Quincy Turner family. Doug Eck charged by Dick Barton on lap nine and never relinquished the lead for his first Super Late Model win of the season. Joe Buccola Jr. led every lap of the Super Sportsman feature holding off King of the Hill winner Kelly Frederes for the win. Stephanie Deveraux won the Lady Challenger feature and Steve Keith Jr. and Bobby Rouche were the Super Challenger winners.

Jason Dupont was on the pole of the Super Late Model event but fell to fourth on the first circuit as Dick Barton charged to the front. Chad Valone was second with Doug Eck third. First Matt Urban and then Randy Lobb passed Dupont. Chad Valone slowed then spins by Chris Hackett and Chad Ruhlman brought out the yellow with six laps complete. Barton, Matt Urban, Eck, Randy Lobb and Dupont were the top five for the restart. Eck passed Urban for second right after the restart then one lap later moved under Barton to lead lap nine while Dupont returned to the fray moving up to third pushing Urban to fourth. Eck remained in the low groove and Barton stayed high. Four cars stopped in turn two including Valone, Andy Kania and Jipp Ortiz with twelve of the twenty-five laps complete. Eck set sail after the restart and John Lobb moved up to third sending Dupont back to fourth. Last years champ Rod Maloy was running fifth. Eck had a half a straight away lead over Barton and John Lobb with six laps remaining. John Lobb used the low groove to pass Barton just before Eck encountered lap traffic. Eck took the two to go signal in heavy lap traffic and held on for the win several car lengths ahead of John Lobb and Barton.

Jay Seekings and Bryon Johnson were on the front row for Spectator feature. Seekings led the first circuit but the yellow flew before lap two could be completed. Seeking had spun in turn two collecting Alex Froman. John Kelsey led for the restart with Johnson in second place. Johnson spun after the restart losing several spots but the race stayed green and Kevin Golden moved up to challenge Kelsey for the lead. The next yellow happened on lap eight involving Chad Schauers and Jermin Strickland. The yellow was only out for half a lap with Tyler Green, John Meese, Strickland and Johnson. The second restart of lap eight was successful with Kelsey still leading. Two laps later the third yellow appeared. David McClenahan and Garry Fisher moved up to challenge Kelsey then tangled going into turn one on lap thirteen sending fourth running Golden into the lead. Froman was second with Aron Dascomb third. Golden held on for the win his first in the Spectator division with Buzz Phearsdorf charging into second.

Brain Crandall used his second starting spot to grab the lead at the start of the Outlaw Cadet feature. Lap two was marred with a double spin Chad Carlson and John Cline. Crandall remained the leader after the restart with Glen Slaney providing the pressure and Paul Norman Jr. third. Crandall could not shake Slaney as the laps wore down. Slaney finally beat Crandall out of turn four as the white flag flew followed by the yellow for Leonard Enos. The final lap fell to Slaney with Crandall second.

Twenty-one E-Mods reported to the speedway for their feature event. Justin Carlson grabbed the led with Randy Hall chasing. The first yellow appeared on lap four for Cale Crocker and Chuck Hart. Randy Hall passed Carlson on the restart and began to build a lead over the rest of the field. Tom Hagberg trailed Carlson in the third spot with Nathan Short, Greg Johnson and point leader Rich Michael Jr.. Johnson took third from Hagberg on lap ten then two laps later Hagberg fell to Michaels. Johnson spun into the infield for yellow two with thirteen laps complete. Carlson moved up alongside Randy Hall after the restart but could not make the pass. The third yellow occurred with fifteen laps complete collecting Andy Sweetland and Steve Dixon. Just one more lap was completed before the fifth yellow for Shane Crotty and Nathan Hall. Short had mechanical problems with two laps remaining and pulled into the infield. Randy Hall won the event for his fourth win in four appearances.

Joe Buccola Jr. started first and led the first lap of the Super Sportsman feature. Steve Kania started second but fell to third shortly after the start with fourth starting Bob Hazzard moving to second. Kania lost another spot on lap six as King of the Hill winner Kelly Frederes took over third. A spin by Ben Burgess brought out the first caution with eight laps complete. The final caution appeared with two laps remaining, Buccola was still in charge with Frederes second and Hazzard third. Frederes tested Buccola on the restart but fell a car length short at the finish giving Buccola his first win of the season.
