6th, 2008 - Tim Rockwell wins both Corry Lumber Spectator "Double Nickels", Justin Carlson Wins E-Mod Championship and Matt Urban Super Late Winner at Stateline Speedway
By Glenn Slocum
Busti, NY: Clouds then sunshine greeted fans for the Corry Lumber Double "Double Nickels" at Stateline Speedway. Twin features for the Spectator and Challenger divisions
headlined the night’s event.
Dana Haner beat Jeff Lamb to the finish winning the first of four Super Challenger features.
Robert Hallowell rubbed fenders with Casey Burch for
several laps before taking the lead to win the second Super Challenger feature.
Tim Rockwell took a controversial win in the first half of the Spectator "Double Nickel" then came from the back to win the second.
Matt
Urban narrowly defeated Darrell Bossard to keep his Super Late Model King of the Hill Challenge title.
Glen Slaney charged through the Outlaw Cadet field to win his fourth of the season from his twelfth starting spot.
Greg Johnson won the final point race for the E-Mods but fell just short of the title as Justin Carlson salvaged a poor starting spot and involvement in two cautions to win the
E-Mod Point Championship.
Matt Urban charged by Chris Hackett to win his second Super Late Model feature of the year.
A late race incident allowed Dan Nocero to close with and then pass Tim Nocero for his third win of the season.
Stephanie
Hilyer came from seventh passing early leader Elaine Best to win the second Lady Challenger feature her sixth of the season.
Joshua
Beckstrom passed early leader Austin Fitzgerald to win the third Super Challenger feature and
Jamie Hebner won the fourth and final race for the
Super Challengers.
The first feature for the Spectators was
brought onto the speedway by Jermin Strickland and Gary Fisher. Brandon Pierce and Tim Rockwell were in row two with Brandon Groters and Anthony Marotto in row three. The first
yellow occurred on lap two for Kevin Hill stopped in the pit gate. Strickland was the leader with Rockwell second and Fisher third. Rockwell led the second circuit with Groters
second and Strickland a distant third. Rockwell entered lap traffic on lap five and lengthened his lead over Groters. Lap traffic nearly took out the leaders on lap eight then one
lap later the yellow flew for Stan Davis Jr. Rockwell, Groters and point leaders Alex Froman, from his fourteenth starting spot, were the top three. Twenty-seven of the
thirty-three starters remained for the restart. Rockwell won the dash to turn one with Groters on his bumper. Two more laps were completed before the third yellow of the race.
Again Rockwell controlled the restart with Groters applying the pressure. Groters moved along side at the white flag. Rockwell cutoff Groters on the exit of turn two then barely
beat Groters to the line for his second win of the season.
The second and final Spectator feature event saw Bob Vogt Jr. on the pole with Pat Landy alongside. John Kelsey and Dave McClenahan were in row two with Joe Rohrer and Tyler
green in row three. Vogt led the first lap with Kelsey second and Rohrer third. Kevin Golden brought out the first caution on lap three. Mike Moon grabbed third on the restart then
a four car tangle occurred when Kelsey was spun in front of the field. Brandon Groters and Dave McClenahan were unable to continue. Vogt remained the leader with Rohrer second and
Moon third. Rohrer moved up alongside Vogt on lap four then the yellow flew for Kelsey. Vogt continued to hang on the lead after the restart but Tim Rockwell the winner of the
first feature moved up to challenge. The fourth yellow occurred with seven laps complete. Vogt, Rockwell, Rohrer were the top three. Vogt pulled off the speedway right after the
green relinquishing the top spot to Rockwell. Moon was second with Rohrer alongside. The green only stayed out three laps until Pat Landy and Nate Lester both stopped with
mechanical problems. Four laps remained after the restart and twenty-two cars. Rockwell ran the final laps unchallenged and Rohrer nipped Moon at the finish for second.
Brian Crandall grabbed
the early lead in the Outlaw Cadet main event an led the first four circuits until overtaken by John Cline just before the first yellow. Cline, Chad Carlson and Kelly Frederes were
the lap five restart leaders. Three laps after the restart the second yellow appeared, this time for Troy Dorman and John H. Cline. The green was immediately followed by a yellow
for Jim Irwin. Point leader Mike Moore spun several times down the front stretch on the restart for the fourth yellow. Moore pulled into the pits during the caution. Cline, Carlson
and Glen Slaney were the leaders. The leaders tangled on the restart ending with Frederes spinning collecting John H Cline and Paul Norman Jr. Slaney was second for the restart
with Carlson third. One lap after the restart Slaney took the top spot. With eleven laps complete the sixth yellow occurred. Cline lost another spot on the restart as Carlson took
second. Slaney drove away from the field over the final laps for his fourth win of the season.
The final
point feature for the E-Mods featured Mike Munsee on the pole with Nate Short second. Munsee was leading by several car lengths when the yellow flew for point leader Justin Carlson
with two laps complete. One lap after the restart John Boyd brought out the second yellow. The third yellow happened with four complete. Dana Wellington spun collecting Carlson.
Second in points Greg Johnson took the top spot on lap five with Munsee second and Scott Gurdak third. Once again the yellow appeared this time for Andy Loomis. The battle was for
second as Johnson moved away from Munsee and Gurdak. A lap twelve spin by Shane Crotty caused caution six. Johnson remained the leader after the restart. Johnson ran unchallenged
to the checkers finishing first in the race and second in the points as Carlson held on to a seventh place finish and the point Championship.
Doug Eck,
Scott Johnson, Matt Urban, Chris Hackett, Chad Valone and John Lobb made up the top three rows for the Super Late Model feature. Eck, injured in a racing incident last Sunday, was
the early leader. Hackett passed Johnson for the runner up spot on lap three but not before Eck had built nearly a straightaway lead. Urban was the next to pass Johnson as six laps
were complete. The race remained green as Eck tackled lap traffic on lap nine. Eck suffered suspension failure on lap eleven slowing dramatically. Hackett was the new leader with
Urban on his bumper. Urban charged by Hackett using the top of the speedway with seven laps remaining. Hackett was unable to close the gap over the final laps and Urban went on to
win his second of the season.
Tim Nocero
powered away from the field on the start of the Super Sportsman feature. By lap seven Nocero led John Boardman by twenty car lengths. Joe Buccola Jr. was third. Bob Van Arsdale
brought out the caution with nine laps complete. Ben Reed stalled for the second caution on the restart and Steve Kania stopped in the infield then pulled into the pits under the
yellow. Nocero, Boardman and Buccola led for the restart. The leaders tangled on the restart, Buccola was involved along with Boardman, Jake Eller and Ben Burgess. Tim Nocero
remained the leader for two more laps after the restart before being over taken by Dan Nocero. Bob Hazzard was third and Wade Watson fourth. Dan Nocero cruised through the final
laps for his third win of the season.
