30th, 2009 - Justin Carlson Wins the Quincy Turner E-Mod Memorial Race
Doug Eck Super Late Model Winner
at Stateline Speedway
By Glenn Slocum
Busti, NY: The main event at Stateline Speedway was the Quincy Turner E-Mod Memorial race sponsored by Shults Auto Credit/Heintzman Accounting and The Bullfrog. Thirty-eight
E-Mods were on hand for the event. Doug Eck lead from green to checkers to win his first Super Late Model feature of the season after a incident at the start that slowed top
runners Chad Valone, Rod Maloy and Chris Hackett. Justin Carlson won the Memorial race with a last lap last corner pass of Russ Dunn for his first of the season. Pete Volpe won the
Super Sportsman feature. Paul Norman notched his first Outlaw Cadet win of the season and became the sixth different winner in the division. Dave Tackett Jr. won his first
Spectator feature passing Kevin Hill in the final laps. Annemarie Reed won her second Lady Challenger feature. Rick Karash won the first Super Challenger feature and Josh Hebner
won the second.
Veterans Doug Eck and Scott Gurdak
were on the front row for the Super Late Model feature with Scott Johnson and Pete Alspaugh in row two of the twenty-five car field. A mix up at the start collected Rod Maloy, Chad
Valone and Dennis Lunger. Eck was out in front by five car lengths after lap one with Gurdak second and John Lobb third. Last week’s winner Scott Johnson nosed under Gurdak on lap
seven for the runners up spot. Eck caught the tail end of the field on lap ten as the race remained under green. Johnson was nearly a straight away behind Eck at the half way mark.
A spin by Lunger did not stop the race one lap later as the leader continued to fight through heavy lap traffic. With five laps remaining Eck slowed allowing Johnson to start to
close. The white flew with Eck still in the lead by three car lengths. Johnson came up just short as Eck won his first of the season.
Russ Dunn led the first circuit of
the Quincy Turner Memorial, with Mike Munsee second and Randy Hall third. A lap two yellow for 79 and 44 force the first restart of the event. As the next lap completed yellow two
appeared when Chris Couchenour went around in turn four. Dunn was flanked by Hall for the lap four restart with Munsee sitting third and Justin Carlson fourth. Dunn won the dash to
turn one as Hall slid into second behind Dunn and Carlson moved up a spot to third. Jack Young was challenging Munsee for the fourth spot with Greg Johnson sixth and Tim Peterson
seventh. With nine laps complete when Dave Shagla, Couchenour and John Woodward Jr. tangled in turn one for the third yellow. Head starter Mark Matthews waived off the restart then
accepted the second but Couchenour and John Kelsey failed to negotiate turn three for caution number four. Hall pressed Dunn after the restart and Young moved into fourth with
Johnson on his bumper. Dunn remained in control at the half way point with Hall five car lengths back trying to hold off Carlson. Young suffered mechanical problems causing yellow
five with five of the twenty-five laps remaining. Dunn, Hall, Carlson, Johnson and Peterson were the restart leaders. Hall went wide on the restart and Carlson took advantage to
gain the number two spot. Carlson pressed Dunn and crossed the line nearly side by side. Carlson made the pass stick in the final corner to lead the only lap that mattered.
Bob Hazzard was the early Super
Sportsman leader. Pete Volpe was second from his eighth starting spot on lap four. The race remained caution free. Volpe caught and passed Hazzard on lap eight. Hazzard lost two
more spots on lap twelve as Joe Buccola and John Boardman grabbed second and third. Volpe made it look easy for his first win of the season.
The yellow appeared on lap two of
the Outlaw Cadet feature with Brad Strickland first, Paul Norman second and Bryan Johnson third. Norman led lap two with Brian Crandall second. Chad Carlson took third just before
the yellow flew with four laps complete. Point Leader Mike Moore left on the hook during the caution. The restart was marred by the third caution. Glen Slaney was fourth after the
restart then took second from Crandall on the next lap. Leonard Enos used the outside passing Crandall for third with five laps remaining. Yellow four occurred with eleven laps
complete. Norman held on for his first of the season.
Chad Schauers led the first lap of
the Spectator feature from his fourth starting spot. Kevin Hill was second. Hill passed Schauers on lap five as did Brandon Pierce one lap later. Schauers brought out the caution
after lap six. A multicar incident on the restart collected Brandon Groters and Mike Moon for caution number three. Hill, Dave Tackett Jr. and Jason Seekings were the restart
leaders. Tackett made his move on lap ten passing Hill for the lead. Wade Mohawk, Skip Joslyn, and Berton Chapel brought out caution four on lap eleven. Tackett held on for his
first Spectator win.
