By Glenn Slocum
Saturday July 17th, 2010 Busti, NY: Leroy’s Towing
sponsored the Super Sportsman Special and Robert Trucking sponsored the Crate
Late Model Jed Lyon Memorial at Stateline Speedway. Brandon Groters continued to
dominate the Spectator division with his eighth win of the season.
Steve Dixon led from lap nine to win the Roberts
Trucking Jed Lyon Memorial the first Crate Late Model event at Stateline. Early
leader Justin Tatlow was third and veteran Jim Cunningham second.
Ben Burgess Jr. recovered from early problems to make
a late race pass winning the Leroy’s Towing Super Sportsman Special.
Chris Hackett won his second Super Late Model feature
of the season in a race that ran caution free.
Chad Carlson defeated a late race charge by Tyler
Green to win his first Outlaw Cadet feature of the year.
John Boyd passed early leader Greg Johnson after
several attempts then lead to the checkers for his first of the season.
Stephanie Hilyer was the Lady Challenger winner her
third.
Jimmy Diabo won his fifth Super Challenger feature and
Richard Langer won the second in a rain shortened event.
Brian
Wilson and Josh Crull were on the front row for the Spectator feature and point
leader Brandon Groters was starting sixteenth. Wilson was out in front at the
end of the first circuit followed by Sam Courson and Gary Fisher. The first
yellow of the event occurred just past the half way point. Wilson, Fisher,
Corson, Mike Moon and Groters were the restart leaders. Groters slipped by
Courson on the restart then zeroed in on Fisher then Josh Crull and Nathan Earle
tangled for the second caution. Nine laps were in the books with Wilson still in
front followed by Fisher, Groters, Matt Harvey and Moon. Groters was second with
ten laps done then Wilson lost the handle in turn one causing yellow number
three and setting up Groters for the win. The fourth yellow of the event
occurred for Crull just before the white flag lap the yellow five on the restart
for Earle. The next restart failed after four cars tangled in turn one including
Jason Covey and Kyle Weilacher, Crull and Patrick Fielding. Groters easily won
his eighth of the season.
Twenty-eight
Crate Late Models started the 30 lap Jed Lyon Memorial. Justin Tatlow and Jamie
Brown were in row one with Matt Cobb and Les Lyon in row two and John Lacki and
Rob Blair in row three. Tatlow and Cobb led the first circuit then during lap
three Lacki and Blair brought out the first yellow. Tatlow, Cobb, Brown, Steve
Dixon and Jason Genco were the leaders. Just one more lap was complete when the
second yellow occurred as Bob Vogt spun in turn one. Dixon passed Brown and Cobb
on the restart to take over second. A lap car caused Tatlow to lift and Dixon
took command on lap nine as the field spread over the entire track. With
thirteen laps compete the third yellow appeared after John Volpe spun into the
infield off turn four. Dixon took the cross flags with a ten car length lead
over Tatlow and Cobb. Bill Cunningham was third with Jim Frank fourth. Blair
having recovered from his early incident was in the top five. Dixon had a
quarter lap on the field in heavy lap traffic with five laps remaining. With two
to go Cunningham beat Tatlow out of turn two for second. Dixon was the man
finishing way out in front claiming the inaugural Crate event.
Ben
Burgess was the Super Sportsman leader when the yellow flew for Jake Eller and
Jason Schumaker. Burgess and Dan Nocero Jr. were the restart leaders. Ben Reed
spun on the restart for yellow number two. Burgess slowed coming out of turn two
and the field scrambled around for yellow number three. Pete Volpe spun between
turns three and four collecting Dan Nocero for caution three. Joe Buccola Jr.
was the new leader with John Boardman second and Wade Watson third. Schumaker
had problems on the restart for his second spin. Lap four was finally completed
after several attempts with Buccola out in front. Boardman was chasing Buccola
and Burgess had advanced back to third. . Burgess beat Boardman out of two on
lap eight to get the runner up spot. Volpe slowed and the yellow returned to the
speedway with nine of the twenty laps complete. Boardman passed Burgess on lap
ten. Burgess recovered and with two to go Buccola was bracketed by Burgess and
Boardman. A spin by Mike Genco closed up the field under yellow. Boardman gave
Burgess the outside after the restart and Burgess used the high side to solidify
second and one lap later take the lead from Buccola. With two laps to go Scott
Lawson spun into the infield, stopped, then rolled onto the speedway bringing
out the caution. The race was for second over the final two circuits with
Buccola beating Boardman out of the final turn for second. Burgess was the
winner his fourth of the season.
John
Volpe led Chris Hackett by the flag on the first lap of the Super Late Model
feature. John Lobb was third with Andy Boozel fourth and Dutch Davies fifth.
Most of the cars moved down to the bottom of the speedway and the racing
remained green. Hackett moved up along Volpe on lap ten leading by a nose at the
stripe. Volpe would not give up and remained alongside Hackett through out the
next circuit before falling in behind. Hackett began lapping the back markers
with Volpe several car lengths back with Lobb a distant third. Hackett took the
win his second of the season in a race which ran caution free.
Jake
Finnerty spun on the initial lap of the Outlaw Cadet feature causing a complete
restart. Chad Carlson was on the high side of the speedway and led the first
circuit. A lap three spin by Chad Schauers caused the first caution. Carlson,
Frederes, Tyler Green, Mike Moore and Steve Kania were the restart leaders.
Tyler passed Frederes for second on the next lap. At the half way mark Green was
alongside Carlson for the lead and Kania was third relegating Frederes back to
fourth with Paul Norman Jr. fifth. Green spun trying to get under Carlson on lap
fifteen but kept going so the yellow did not appear. Carlson was now left with
no immediate challengers with just a few laps remaining. The race finished with
Carlson the winner his first of the season.
Jaik
Halpainy had trouble on the start of the E-Mod feature causing a complete
restart. The second start was a success and Greg Johnson lead John Boyd at the
line. A lap two spin by Chad Ruhlman brought out the second caution on the
second lap. Mike McGee, Anthony Marotto and Tom Pierce caused caution three on
the restart. Shawn Shingledecker spun with help on lap four for caution four.
After several attempts Boyd made the outside pass to take the lead. Ron Seeley
was third with Cale Crocker fourth. Pierce spun with ten complete for yellow
number five. Scott Gurdak worked his way into the top five after the restart
then passed Crocker for fourth. Boyd held on for his first of the season at
Stateline.
