Scott Johnson Wins Super Late Model Feature
at Stateline Speedway
By Glenn Slocum
Busti, NY Saturday June 19th, 2010: Pop
up storms slowed the racing action at Stateline Speedway as track crew and
racers fought to keep the racing surface. Scott Johnson notched his second
feature win of the season extending his point lead in the Super Late Model
division. Johnson passed early leader Darrell Bossard on lap sixteen then
survived several cautions and a late race charge by Chris Hackett for the win.
Bubba Broderick took advantage of early leader Scott
Bonnellís mechanical problems then mastered lap traffic winning his second ASCS
feature of the season and the third of his career.
John Boardman took control of the Super Sportsman
feature on lap three for his second win of the season.
Dave Hess Jr. passed Alex Froman with two laps to go
winning his first E-Mod feature of the season.
Brandon Groters won his fifth Spectator feature
extending his point lead.
Kelly Frederes won his fourth Outlaw Cadet feature in
a caution filled event.
Scott Dellahoy led just the final two laps winning the
Menís and Ladies combined Super Challenger feature.
Bossard and point leader Scott Johnson were on the front row for the Super Late
Model feature. Bossard won the race to turn one and led Johnson by a nose to end
the first lap. A lap two spin by Chevy Scott brought out the yellow. Bossard,
Johnson, Bump Hedman and John Volpe were the restart leaders. On lap three
Nathan Short spun collecting George LaBarbera, Charles Supplee and Andy Boozel.
Chad Valone used the restart to move into the top four as Bossard lead the way.
Volpe nearly spun on lap six losing three spots. Valone slowed with right rear
flat but could not clear the speedway and was struck by Scott Gurdak. Bossard,
Johnson, Hedman, Dick Barton, Eck and Volpe made up the top six for the lap
eight restart. As the green fell LaBarbera lost a wheel bring out the yellow for
the fourth time in seven laps. Valone returned and Barton left the speedway
during the caution period. Valoneís problems continued as he spun bringing out
the fifth yellow with 11 laps complete. Valone, Scott and Supplee tangled on lap
twelve for caution six. Johnson make his move on lap sixteen nipping Bossard at
the line then won lap latter Hackett tapped Bossard spinning Bossard for caution
seven. Johnson, Hackett, Hedman, Eck, and Volpe were the leaders for the restart
with eight laps remaining. Gurdak spun to avoid a slowing Hedman on the restart
for caution eight. Eck moved up to third, Volpe to fourth and Randy Lobb moved
into fifth. With five laps remaining Johnson led Hackett by six car lengths and
Eck trailed Hackett by fifteen car lengths. Caution nine happened for Supplee
ending his night with 21 laps in the books and only nine starters remained.
Hackett seemed to be catching Johnson then Johnson moved up high with Hackett
cinching the win, his second of the season.
Bonnell and Brad Knab led the ASCS Sprints onto the speedway. Bubba Broderick
and Bryan Howland were in row two. Bonnell led the first circuit with Broderick
second and Howland third. A twin spin by Doug Bowman and Shayne Ely brought out
the yellow with five laps complete. Bonnell, Broderick, Howland, Brad Knab and
Jared Zimbardi were the leaders. Bonnell broke an axel on the restart ending his
evening up against the wall in turn two. Broderick became the new leader and
twenty laps remained in the event. Broderick set sail with the green. Howland
trailed by several car lengths and Zimbardi was third nearly a straight away
behind. Lap traffic became a factor with ten laps remaining. Howland was able to
close with the leader as they threaded thru lap traffic. With five remaining
Howland was within striking distance and even tapped Broderick coming out of
turn two. Two laps remained and lap cars continued to hamper the leaders.
Broderick was able to thread the needle cinching the win his second of the
incident on the start of the Super Sportsman feature ended with Ben Reed and
Allen Haskins leaving the speedway connected to a wrecker. Jake Eller and Dan
Nocero Jr. were the leaders after one. Jason Schumaker and Bob Hazzard stopped
for the second caution. John Boardman fought his way to the front on the restart
and two more laps were complete before the yellow flew for Schumaker spun in
turn one. Boardman started on the outside for the restart and beat Eller to turn
one for the lead. On lap later Eller fell to last weekís winner Joe Buccola Jr.
Boardman controlled the remainder of the event his second win of the season.
Froman and Tom Hagberg made up the front row of the E-Mod feature event. Froman
led the first lap and Mark Gilbert and Chet Sheets spun for the first caution.
Gilbert was able to continue but Sheets left the speedway on a hook. It was
Froman out front for lap two with Hagberg right outside followed by John Boyd
and Scott Gurdak. Dave Hess Jr. fell back to fifth then on lap seven began to
move forward, taking third form Boyd then two laps later second from Hagberg.
Gurdak retired on lap twelve and Greg Johnson joined the top five. With five
laps remaining Froman led Hess by 15 car lengths. A lap seventeen spin by Boyd
allowed the field to close with Froman. Froman, Hess, Hagberg, Johnson and Brian
Fardink were the restart leaders. Head starter Mark Matthews waived off the
first attempted restart then liked the second better. Hess used the high side to
just nip Froman at the line with two to go. Once Hess took the lead Froman was
unable to mount a challenge giving Hess his first E-Mod win of the season.
Britt was leading the Spectator feature when the yellow flew for Josh Crull on
lap two. A multi-car incident on the restart caused when Matt Swanson crossed
the speedway in front of most of the field. Britt led followed by Kevin Hill,
Nicholas Mohawk Bryan Johnson and Brandon Groters. Mike Moon spun on lap three
for the third yellow just after Britt nearly spun losing two spots and turning
the lead over to Hill. Brian Wilson stopped in the pit entrance drawing the
fourth caution of the race. Groters charged to the front on lap four then the
yellow flew for Crull once more. 12 of the 22 cars remained for the lap six
restart. Groters quickly began to distance him self from the field once the
green flew. Mohawk spun collecting Britt with ten laps complete. Ken Drake lost
a wheel on the restart for caution six. Groters ran the final five laps
unchallenged for his fifth win.
Davis Jr. and Kelly Frederes led the Outlaw Cadets on their pace lap. Frederes
was first by the flag leading lap one. Davis was second followed by Steve Kania.
A back stretch spin by John Cline caused the first caution with two laps
complete. Steve Moynihan and Chad Schauers brought out yellow number two on lap
five. Frederes, Kania, Davis, Glenn Slaney and Ryan Scott were the leaders.
Jermin Strickland and Troy Dorman brought out yellow three with five complete.
Brian Crandall spun collecting several cars for caution four. Frederes and Kania
continued to lead the event with Slaney third. John Cline, Paul Hines, Schauers
and Moynihan caused caution five with eleven laps complete. Frederes could not
shake Kania thru the final laps and Kania moved to Frederes quarter panel on the
final lap but could not complete the pass.
tried a new format for the Challenger classes. The top five from the menís and
womenís heats started the Challenger feature. Dale Hines did half a roll on lap
three for the first caution as Randy Beckstrom and Scott Dellahoy Jr. led. Kyle
Jackson made hard contact with the back stretch concrete for the second caution
with just two laps remaining. Dellahoy led by a nose after the white flag and
just beat Beckstrom for the win.
