Joe Buccola Jr. Bear Lake Inn Super Sportsman Special Winner at
Stateline Speedway
By Glenn Slocum
Busti, NY: Threatening skies did not dampen the
racers as 33 Super Late Models came to qualify for the $4,000 to win
Budweiser/Arthur R Gren Super Late Model Special at Stateline Speedway. John
Lobb, 4th in the point standings did a flip after contact with the
backstretch wall during the first heat but was able to make the feature event.
Dave Hess Jr. briefly led the event then suffered mechanical problems. Ed Carley
led for a while falling to a Robbie Blair slide job. Blair looked to have the
field covered then succumbed to mechanical problems setting Dick Barton up for
his 74th feature win at Stateline and the first for his new 14B car.
Joe Buccola Jr. held on through several cautions and
rain to win the Bear Lade Inn Super Sportsman Special.
2009 E-Mod Champ Justin Carlson led from green to
checkers for his first feature win of the season.
Jimmy Diabo notched his third feature win of the
season in the first Super Challenger feature and Aaron Liberati won his second
nipping Jeff Lamb at the line.
Brandon Groters came from 16th to win his
third Spectator feature.
Kelly Frederes made a late race pass of Chad Carlson
to win his third Outlaw Cadet feature.
Dave
Hess Jr. and Ed Carley the first and second heat winners were on the front row
for the Super Late Model Special. Hess jumped into the early lead with Carley
Second. The yellow flew after the first circuit for Bob Close stopped on the
speedway. During the yellow head started Mark Matthews told Hess to report to
the pits as he was leaking fluid, making Carley the new leader with Robbie Blair
alongside. Carley led the next lap but lap three was yellowed as Rob Middleton
spun in turn four. Carley, Blair, Dick Barton, Greg Oakes and Randy Lobb were
the restart leaders. Once more Carley led with Barton alongside Blair for the
second spot and Oakes a distant fourth. Middleton had more problems on lap six
for the third yellow. George LaBarbera and Wendell Pinckney tangled on the
restart for the fourth caution. Management temporarily counted the yellow laps
during the caution then rescinded the decision restarting the event on lap six.
Two laps after the restart Andy Boozel had trouble for caution five. Carley,
Blair, Barton, Randy Lobb and Oakes were the top five. David Scott was seventh
from his twelfth starting spot. As lap ten approached the top six cars were
single file. John Lacki stopped in the pit entrance causing yellow six with nine
laps complete. Dutch Davies was the next to have problems tangling with Scott
Gurdak for yellow seven. Bumping and banging in the back of the field during the
restart ended with Doug Eck and Scott Gurdak stopped in turn four for yellow
eight. A light rain started to fall as field prepared for the restart. Carley
and Blair quickly separated from the remainder of the field. On lap thirteen
Blair executed a perfect slide job in turn two to take the lead. Once in front
Blair began to build a lead over Carley. On lap seventeen Dennis Lunger stopped
high in turn one for the ninth caution. Just 18 of the original 30 starters were
still on the speedway. The green was quickly followed by the yellow as Randy
Lobb stopped in the infield. Scott was up to fifth with Scott Johnson sixth.
Boozel brought out caution number eleven after scrapping to a stop on the back
stretch wall. Twenty of the thirty five laps were complete. Mike Knight was
sixth. Gurdak slowed then could not make the turn into the pits for caution
twelve with 22 laps complete and 15 cars remaining. Blair seemed to be in a
class by himself with just three laps completed after the last restart Blair had
nearly a straightaway lead over second place Barton, then his luck ended with
mechanical problems on lap 27. Barton assumed the lead with Carley second
followed by Oakes, Scott and Knight. Scott began a charge after the restart
passing Carley and Oakes for the runner up spot. Barton has amassed a six car
length lead. Carley retired with three laps remaining. With two to go Scott
trailed by two car lengths tried Barton on the final lap but could not get by
giving Barton his first feature win of the season.
Allen
Haskins and Ben Reed were on the front row for the Bear Lake Inn Super Sportsman
feature. Reed led lap one then fell to Bob Hazzard just before Pete Volpe spun
into the infield for yellow number one. Yellow number two occurred on the
restart for Jason Schumaker stopped in the exit of turn four. On the restart
John Boardman and Ben Burgess brought out the third yellow. Burgess was unable
to continue and Boardman was sent into pits. After a lengthy yellow the race
resumed and Joe Buccola Jr. passed Reed for the lead. After two laps of green
flag racing Haskins spun in turn one for caution four. At the half way mark
Buccola led Reed by 15 car lengths and Pete Volpe trailed Reed by 5. Volpe did a
snap spin on lap twelve slapping the front stretch wall for yellow number five.
After the longest green of the event Jake Eller spun to a smoking stop in the
exit of turn four with 17 laps complete. During the yellow the rain increased.
Buccola tip toed through the final tree laps for the victory.
After
a couple of quick hot laps the E-Mod feature event was set to take the green
with Justin Carlson and Ron Davies on the front row. Carlson was the first
around with Davies second. Mike Eschrich was third, John Boyd fourth and Scott
Gurdak fifth. Eschrich nearly spun in front of the field on lap seven but was
able to hold on to the third position. With ten complete Carlson led Davies with
ten car lengths and Eschrich was a distant third. The first yellow flew on lap
twelve for Greg Johnson. Carlson remained the leader after the restart with
Davies and Eschrich in tow. Gurdak made a run on Eschrich but could not complete
the pass falling back into fourth. The second caution was for Anthony Marotto
who had spun to a stop in the infield. With two to go Davies lost a left rear
tire bringing his race to an end two laps early and causing caution three.
Carlson held on and Gurdak nipped Eschrich for second on the final lap.
The front row spun on the first lap of the Spectator
feature and a yellow was avoided giving the lead to Kyle Weilacher. Weilacher
lost the led to Kevin Golden on lap four. Brandon Groters came from 16th
to take the lead just before the yellow flew for Matt Swanson. Groters, Golden
and Mike Moon were the restart leaders. Weilacher spun for caution two on the
restart. After one lap the yellow returned as Kevin Hill was sitting in the
middle of turn four facing the wrong direction. Moon passed Golden for second
then the fourth yellow this won for Josh Crull. Ben Asel passed Golden for third
just before the two to go signal then yellow five leaving two laps remaining.
Yellow six happened on the restart. Groters held on for the win his third of the
season.
Stan
Davis Jr. led the first lap of the Outlaw Cadet feature. Chad Carlson was second
with Kelly Frederes third. A lap five spin by Rodney Thoms brought out the first
yellow. On lap eight Carlson beat Davis to the line to become the new leader. On
the next lap Frederes also got by Davis for the runner up spot. Thoms had more
problems causing the second yellow on lap 11. On the next circuit Steve Moynihan
lifted Mike Moore spinning Moore for yellow three. Ryan Scott was third on the
restart. Carlson and Frederes were side by side at the line on lap fourteen then
Frederes completed the pass on lap fifteen to become the new leader. Frederes
ran away from Carlson in the final three laps for his third win.
