May 8th, 2010 - Kelly Frederes Wins Affinity One Federal Credit Union Outlaw Cadet Extra and
Scott Johnson Super Late Model Winner at Stateline Speedway

By Glenn Slocum

Busti, NY: The Affinity One Federal Credit Union sponsored events at Stateline Speedway turned in to a cold windy affair as Mother Nature forgot it was nearly the middle of May. Jimmy Diabo won the Super Challenger feature his first of the season from his 14th starting spot. Brandon Groters won his first Spectator feature of the season leading from lap three. The Outlaw Cadet Extra event was won by Kelly Frederes. Frederes has been perfect so far winning every event he has entered. Scott Johnson led from green to checkers to win the Super Late Model feature over a charging John Lobb. Joe Buccola Jr. went from third to first in the final corner of the Super Sportsman feature as the leaders tangled. Rich Michael Jr. used the high groove on the final lap to pass Scott Gurdak for his second E-Mod win of the season.

Jamie Frazier and Bill Baker Jr. led 23 Super Challengers on to the speedway for the first feature event of the evening. At the end of the first circuit Baker was the leader. Then on lap two Jimmy Diabo came from his fourteenth starting spot to grab the lead. Diabo led the remainder of the event for his first win of the season.

Nicholas Mohawk started on the pole and led the first lap of Spectator feature. At the end of two laps the caution flew for Chris Withers. Brian Wilson started second on the restart but won the race to turn one to lead lap three. Heavy contact between early leader Mohawk and Rob Brown caused caution two with three laps complete. 2009 Champ Brandon Groters became the new leader on the restart with Wilson second. Caution three happened on lap six. Groters, Wilson, Brandon Pierce, Ben Asel and Withers were the top five for the restart. Groters had a ten car length lead after lap seven and Wilson led Pierce by five. With two laps to go Jordan John stalled causing caution four. Groters led the final two circuits for his first win of the season.

Brian Crandall led the first lap of the Outlaw Cadet feature with Kelly Frederes second and Chad Carlson third. Crandall led lap two by a nose then lost the lead to Frederes coming out to turn two. One lap later Steve Moynihan passed Crandall for the runner up spot. At the half way point Frederes led Moynihan by half a straight. A spin by Chad Schauers caused the first yellow with fourteen laps completed. After the restart the field quickly became strung out behind Frederes and Moynihan. Tyler Green moved into the top three with five laps remaining. It was Frederes at the checkers and Moynihan nipping Green by a nose.

Scott Johnson and Dick Barton were on the front row of Super Late Model feature. Johnson led Barton at the end of one then Scott Gurdak grabbed second from Barton on the next lap. John Lobb then moved up to contest third with Barton just before the yellow flew for Randy Lobb. Five of the twenty-five laps were complete. Johnson, Gurdak, John Lobb, Barton and Bump Hedman were the restart leaders. Dutch Davies had troubles during the restart bringing out the yellow right after the green. After a push Davies rejoined the field. Johnson easily controlled the restart and began to build a lead over Gurdak and John Lobb. Barton had settled into fourth with Hedman a distant fifth. Lobb used the cushion to pass Gurdak for the second spot with seventeen laps down. Lobb closed with Johnson and was on his bumper with five laps remaining. Lap traffic slowed Johnson on the white flag lap but Lobb was unable to take advantage giving Johnson his first win of the season.

Ben Burgess Jr. led fourteen of the fifteen laps in the Super Sportsman feature. A last lap caution allowed the field to close and 2009 Champ John Boardman muscled by Burgess to lead down the back stretch. Burgess tapped Boardman in the final corner spinning both cars allowing Joe Buccola Jr. to win the event from third.

Scott Gurdak jumped the cushion on lap two losing the lead the Tom Hagberg. One lap later Gurdak regained the spot just before a spin collecting Greg Johnson and Troy Carr. Four laps were complete with Gurdak, Hagberg, Justin Carlson, Rich Michael Jr. and Dave Shagla the leaders. Hagberg lost a couple of spots on lap six then one lap later the yellow flew for Troy Carr in turn four. Gurdak was still the leader with Carlson second, Michael third, Hagberg fourth and Shagla fifth. The top three separated from the field running nose to tail. Michael passed Carlson with five laps remaining and lap traffic became an issue. Gurdak was running the middle groove forcing Michael to use the high side which he did on the final lap for his second win of the season.
