September
10th, 2010 - Robbie Blair Wins the Friday Edition of the Roberts Trucking ULMS
Super Late Model September Spectacular
at Stateline Speedway
By Glenn Slocum
Friday September 10th, 2010 Busti, NY: Friday was
opening night for the Roberts Trucking September Spectacular and Mother Nature
delivered clear skies. Thirty-one Super Late Models attempted to gain one of the
twenty-four starting spots for the $5,000 top prize in the Friday edition of the
ULMS Roberts Trucking Super Late Model Spectacular.
Chad Carlson won the Finn’s Auto Sales &
Service/Magnum Graphics Outlaw Cadet Special assuming the lead after rookie
Steve Kania tangled with Tyler Green.
Robbie Blair waited until nine to go to make his
charge to the front for his second ULMS victory of the season winning the first
round of the Roberts Trucking Super Late Model September Spectacular.
Dave Hess Jr. dominated the UEMS E-Mod 25 lap feature
event for his third win in five starts. Hess led from the second lap for the
win.
Steve Dixon remained the King of the Crates easily
winning the Crate Late Model feature as he did earlier in the season on the
Crate’s first appearance at Stateline.
Matt Harvey won the Spectator main event his third
win.
Mike Kosinski held of Dan Nocero Jr. to win his first
Super Sportsman feature of the season.
Greg Rockwell won his third Super Challenger feature.
Young
Steve Kania and veteran Chad Carlson were on the front row for the twenty-five
lap Finn’s Auto Sales and Service/Magnum Graphics Outlaw Cadet Special. Kania
moved into the early lead then a three multi-car incident collected Jake
Finnerty, Stan Davis Jr., John Cline and Chris Ward. Tyler Green tapped Kania on
the restart sending Kania around and bringing out the second caution of the
event. Officials placed Kania in the rear for causing the yellow and Green for
tapping him. Carlson inherited the lead then two laps later the third caution
occurred with Kania, Finnerty and Rick Karash involved. Carlson, Glen Slaney,
Kelly Frederes, and Brian Crandall were the restart leaders. Kania went into the
pits during the yellow. Cline did a half spin in turn one collecting Byron
Johnson for yellow number four. Davis cause yellow number five with eight laps
complete coming to a stop atop a tractor tire placed to keep the race cars out
of the infield. At the half way point Carlson led Slaney by tow car lengths with
point leader Frederes back five car lengths from Slaney. Finnerty, Chad Schauers
and Crandall tangled for yellow six with fifteen laps down. Green was fourth on
the restart and Steve Moynihan fifth. Yellow seven was for Davis who had slowed
to a stop in turn one. Green grabbed third from Frederes on lap twenty and began
to press Slaney for second when the eighth yellow flew when Chris Ward spun into
the infield off turn four. Carlson held on to pocket the $500 winners share with
Slaney second and Green third.
Chris
Hackett led the first circuit of the Roberts Trucking Super Late Model feature
after stating in the number two spot. On lap two veteran Dick Barton was second
with pole sitter Andy Kania third and Chad Valone fourth. Scott Gurdak stopped
high in turn three for the first caution of the event with six laps complete.
Hackett, Barton, Kania, Valone and Jason Morell were the leaders. Barton and
Hackett cross the start finish line dead even on lap eight and Barton led by a
nose on lap nine then by a car length on lap ten. Kania held on to the third
spot with Robbie Blair fourth from his ninth starting spot and Valone fifth.
Barton continued to extend his lead as the first fifteen of forty laps came to a
close. Barton entered lap traffic just one lap before the half way mark. Boom
Briggs nearly recovered from a spin between turns three and four but was bumped
by a passing racer for caution number two. During the yellow Dave Hess was
stopped by the official for leaking fluid then pushed into the pits. Barton led
the single file restart. Mike Knight was the only racer making headway after the
restart then he succumbed with mechanical problems with 13 laps remaining.
Barton, Hackett, Blair, Kania and Valone led. With ten laps remaining Barton led
Hackett by five car lengths. With nine laps remaining Blair made his charge to
the front using the outside to pass Hackett then one lap later did the same the
Barton and with two to go led Barton by half a straight. Blair handily won the
event his second ULMS victory of the season.
Dave
Hess Jr. and Scott Gurdak made up the front row for the UEMS E-Mod event. Gurdak
was leading when the yellow flew for Mike McGee stopped in turn four. Gurdak,
Hess, Joel Watson, Randy Hall and Vic Vena were the restart leaders. Hess used
the outside starting spot to pass Gurdak for the lead. Watson nearly spun on lap
five allowing Hall by for third. Hess was running away with the lead with Hall
hounded Gurdak for second, Watson was a distant fourth and Brent Rhebergen ran
fifth. Hall inched by Gurdak for the runner up spot at the half way point and
Vena retired to the infield. By lap sixteen Hess had caught the rear of the
field and Gurdak had regained the second spot from Hall. A lap twenty one
incident involved Carl McKinney, Chet Sheets, Alex Froman and Brian Douglas for
caution three. No one had anything for Hess as he easily moved away from the
field with just one lap remaining the fourth yellow flew as Froman spun in turn
two. Hess ran the final circuit unchallenged his third win in five starts.
Max
Blair pulled in the infield after a first lap spin by Kyle Zimmerman as Steve
Dixon led. Robbie Blair pulled into the pits during the caution as did
Zimmerman. Dixon remained the leader on the restart with Ed Carley second and
Robert Dorman third. Dorman passed Carley on lap three for the number two spot.
With ten of the twenty five laps complete Dixon led Dorman by half a straight,
Carley was still third with Jason Genco fourth. Les Lyon brought out the second
yellow with twelve laps complete. Genco and Carley rubbed on the restart causing
caution three. Both Genco and Carley pulled into the pits after the incident.
Dixon, Dorman, Bill Cunningham, John Volpe and John Haggerty were the restart
leaders. A two car incident with just five laps remaining involved Bob Vogt Jr.
and Newt Tackett. As it was in the first twenty it was all Dixon in the final
five laps.
Point
leader Brandon Groters edged Sam Courson at the line to lead the first lap of
the Spectator feature. Matt Harvey was third. Groters lead ended quickly with a
lap five flat placing Courson in the top spot with Harvey second. At the end of
lap six Harvey was the new leader and Mike Moon was pressing Courson for third.
Moon won the contest for third just before Courson lost the handle in turn three
for caution two. Matt Sampson spun with nine laps complete for caution three.
Harvey won the race his third of the season.
Allen
Yarbrough stopped on the front stretch on the second lap of the Super Sportsman
feature as Mike Kosinski lead Ben Reed and Dan Nocero Jr.. Ben Burgess spun but
did not bring out yellow losing several positions. Nocero bested Reed on lap
four for second just before a spin by Orville Edward. Kosinski could not shake
Nocero as the two stretched their lead over the remainder of the field. Lap
traffic temporarily separated the two leaders with two laps to go. Nocero just
could not muster the speed to best Kosinski giving Kosinski his first win of the
season.
