Hackett Wins Super Late Model Event
at Stateline
By
Glenn Slocum
Bobby Rohrer beat Pat McGuire by inches to win the Kwik Fill/Red Apple
Limited Late Model King of the Hill, but McGuire came back to win the feature
event. Chris Hackett capitalized on a mistake by Doug Eck to win his first Super
Late Model feature of the year. Greg Johnson led every lap of the caution filled
Outlaw Cadet feature. Dave Hess Jr. won his sixth E-Mod feature and Don McGuire
won the Budweiser Super Sportsman event. Brian Crandall and Ron Bush were the
Spectator winners.

Brian Crandall lead lap one of the first Spectator feature with Rick
Thompson second and Dennis Lunger third. A
lap two spin by Brian Larson brought out the first caution. Crandall remained
the leader at the halfway point and Vic Earle moved into third. Rick Sperry spun
on lap nine for the second caution. Crandall was still the leader with Earle
aligned second and Lunger third, Paul Norman fourth and John Kelsey fifth. Earle
lost the handle with one to go collecting Lunger allowing Mark Ramsey to finish
second and Kelsey third as Crandall led them all to win his third feature of the
season.

James Conner lead the first two laps of Spectator feature two but was
passed by Ron Bush on lap three as Eric Gurdak spun to a stop on the
backstretch. Bush remained the leader on the restart and Jason Stetson was
second with Mike Knight third. Merle Burlingham hit the turn four wall on lap
six for caution number two. Bush lead the final five to win his first of the
year. Stetson finished second and Knight third.

Greg Johnson and John Pencille were on row one of Outlaw Cadet feature.
The first start was aborted when Chris Blose and Doug Dunham became hooked
together and stopped before reaching Spanky Halls green flag. The second attempt
was successful and Greg Johnson lead with John Pencille second and Louie
DeDionisio third. Johnson was into lap traffic on lap seven as the field was now
strung completely around the speedway. Pete Alspaugh spun on lap nine allowing
the field to close on Johnson. During the caution Pencille went into the pits
allowing DeDionisio to take over second and points leader Jeff VanArsdale third.
Pencille returned to the speedway and was aligned at the rear. The restart was
spoiled by debris on the speedway for third caution. Phil Knight spun on the
next restart bringing out the caution before a lap could be completed. Johnson
lead the next two until Nathan Short spun on lap eleven. Phil Knight and Nathan
Short had troubles on the restart for the next caution. Johnson finished by
leading them all and winning his third of the year. John Pencille recovered to
finish seventh, DeDionisio was second and VanArsdale third.

Dana Cummings led the first lap of Budweiser Super Sportsman feature.
Mike Kosinski stalled coming out of four at the end of lap one to bring out the
yellow. Gary Foster led lap two as Dana Cummings faded to second. Don McGuire
move into second on lap five followed by Randy Parmenter and Scott Bayle. Don
Stanley came to rest at the edge of the speedway on lap six for the second
caution of the race. Don McGuire took the lead at the end of the restart lap and
led for two until a spin by Joe Buccola brought out the next caution. Dave
Cummings passed Parmenter for third as McGuire led. Parmenter came back to third
on the white flag lap and passed for second relegating Foster to third. It was
the second win for McGuire.

Doug Eck and Wally Fox brought the twenty-seven Super Late Models out for
their feature event. Chris Hackett and Dave Lyon were in row two with Dan
Armbruster and John Lacki in row three. Eck won the race to turn one and started
to pull away from the field. Hackett was second with Fox third and Lyon fourth.
Lyon nearly spun coming out of four then pulled away but in the wild scramble to
avoid him Scott Johnson stopped bringing out the yellow on lap seven. Lyon and
Lobb went to the pits on the yellow and then returned to the speedway. Urban
moved to fifth on the restart and quickly got by Fox for third as Eck and
Hackett led. Moose Dunnewold and
Ted Kosinski tangled on lap eleven for the second caution. The leaders were Eck,
Hackett, Urban, Fox and Dan Armbruster. One lap was completed before Chad
Clement spun in four for the third caution. Rod Philips had moved by Armbruster
for fifth on this restart. Al Crocker stumbled on the restart then stopped in
turn four bringing out caution four. Armbruster, Maloy and Chad Ruhlman passed
Phillips on the restart. Lyon, Clement, Bump Hedman and Dusty Franklin brought
out the fifth caution on lap fourteen. Lyon went the pits and the others to the
rear of the field. Eck and Hackett controlled the restart with Urban and
Armbruster following. Fox had slipped to fifth with Chad Ruhlman on the inside
trying to get by. Philips came charging back past Fox and Ruhlman for fifth by
lap twenty as the leaders got into lap traffic. Hackett was able to close on Eck
in lap traffic but could not find the way around. Eck received the white flag
then spun in the middle of turns three and four bringing out the caution and
giving the lead to Hackett. Armbruster also had problems on the white flag lap
but retained his spot. The one lap dash for the win was set up with Hackett in
first, Urban second then Armbruster, Phillips, Ruhlman and Fox. Hackett won the
one lap dash for his first win of the year.

Stu Rickart collected Charlie Winchell and Dale Applebee in a first lap
spin in the E-Mod main. Tink Mealy lost the handle while leading on lap two
bringing out the yellow and moving Rickart to first with Justin Carlson second
and Al Cressley third. Carlson went into the pit during the caution moving
Cressley to second and Randy Parmenter to third. Cressley took the lead on the
restart and Dave Hess moved to fourth. Hess passed Parmenter on lap four for
third and Rickart for second on lap five. Bill Thomas and Mike Samuelson brought
out third caution on lap nine. Hess used the restart to pass Cressley for the
lead as the five to go signal was given. Thomas spun into the infield in turn
four and slowed the race on lap twelve. Mike Hess was now in third. Hess led the
final three lap to win feature number six. Al Cressley was second and Mike Hess
third.

Bobby Rohrer was on the pole for the Limited Late Model feature with
points leader Pat McGuire in the second position. McGuire took the lead at the
drop of the green and led through lap three when Ron Bem stopped in four
bringing out the caution flag. Third running Paul Briggs went to the pits during
the caution. Andy Knight and Dave Lyon in Cressleys’ car spun to avoid Bob
Vogt on the restart and the yellow was shown again. Two more laps were completed
before Ed Simmer, Joe Weber, John Cline and Ron Seeley spun for the third
yellow. Bob Vogt and Chad Ramsey tangled on the restart bringing out the fourth
caution. McGuire lead the next four until Brian Fardink and Ed Simmer brought
out the fifth caution. Tom Hagberg was now third with Steve Moynihan fourth and
Paul Briggs fifth. Two more laps were completed when Mike Moore and Ron Seeley
tangled for caution number six. Hagberg bested Rohrer on the restart for the
second position. Mike Coyle brought out caution number seven on lap fifteen.
Briggs tagged Bobby Rohrer causing him to spin on lap sixteen bring out the
eight caution and allowing Tom Schnars into the third spot. Vogt and Ramsey
tangled again on the restart forcing Vogt to the pits with a flat. McGuire
easily won the event with Hagberg second and Schnars third.
