Randy Lobb Wins
Bud Challenge at Stateline Speedway
By
Glenn Slocum
The Budweiser King of the Hill and Bud Challenge was held on a perfect
summer evening. Matt Urban won the King of the Hill for the Super Late Model
class and Ed Carley was the runner up but Randy Lobb was the winner of the Bud
Challenge. Lobb passed Urban on lap seventeen and never relinquished the lead to
win his first feature event of the season. Jim Hilyer won his third feature of
the year by leading every lap of the Outlaw Cadet feature. Pat McGuire notched
his seventh win in the Limited Late Model class. Dave Hess Jr. won his first
E-Mod feature at the speedway. Randy Parmenter won the Budweiser Super Sportsman
feature and Rush Firestone and Paul Norman won the Spectator events.
Ron Bush moved from the second row
to lead going into turn one on the first lap of the first Spectator feature. A
quick caution caused a complete restart. Bush made the same move on the next
start and led into one then was quickly passed by Rush Firestone. Eric Gurdak
spun on lap four for the second caution of the event. Brandon Groeter spun one
lap later for caution three. Firestone won the event with Pat Passanise second
and Joe McMurty third.
Paul Norman and John Kelsey
were on the front row of the second Spectator feature. Norman. Norman led the
first two then points leader Steve Huling came to a stop in turn two. Huling was
towed to the infield and the race was realigned. Steve Keith moved into second
passing Kelsey on lap four as Brian Crandall took over fourth. Crandall passed
Kelsey on lap six and began challenging Keith on the outside. A Dennis Lumger
spin stopped the race on lap eight. Norman maintained the lead on the restart
and Victor Earle came from nowhere to second on the white flag lap. A spin
slowed the field once more setting up a one-lap dash for the win. The dash ended
with a spin involving Keith and getting Mark Ramsey disqualified. Norman won
with Earle second and Bill Baker Jr. third.
By virtue of his King of the
Hill win Matt Urban was on the pole for the Super Late Model Bud Challenge with
Ed Carley second, Rich Gardner third and Bob Craig fourth. Twenty-eight Super
Lates reported for the event. Carley went wide in two on the start giving Urban
the lead with Gardner second and Brian Emory third. Gardner passed Urban on the
inside on lap five but a spin by Carley negated the pass. Urban was lined up
first with Gardner second, Bryan Emory third and Randy Lobb fourth. Rod Maloy
was shown fifth with Bob Craig sixth. Moose Dunnewold lost the handle on the
restart but not before Gardner beat Urban to the line to lead lap four. Gardner
moved to the bottom on the restart and Urban passed him high to lead lap five
when a spin by John Lacki and Dunnewold stopped the race once more on lap six.
Dave Scott was now sixth starting beside Maloy. Urban narrowly led Gardner on
the next circuit and Gardner led the next as the two continued to swap the lead.
Chad Valone came to a stop against the turn three fence on lap nine. Urban was
the current leader with Gardner second Randy Lobb third and Dave Scott fourth.
Points leader Dan Armbruster was running tenth and second in points Maloy in
sixth. Urban was the leader at half way as Gardner began to fade. First Randy
Lobb passed Gardner then Scott. Randy Lobb passed Urban in traffic for the lead
on lap seventeen. Lloyd Swain spun on lap nineteen as Randy Lobb led with Urban
second, Scott third and Gardner fourth. Armbruster was now seventh and Maloy
fifth. Scott Johnson passed Maloy on the restart for fifth.
Eck was spun on lap twenty-three with three laps remaining in the event
for the next caution. Maloy passed Johnson for fifth on the restart. Debris on
the speedway brought out the caution with two to go. Armbruster passed both
Maloy and Gardner on the restart but Randy Lobb hung on for the win with Matt
Urban second and Dave Scott third.
Jim Hilyer and Mark Hall were the
early leaders of the Outlaw Cadet feature. Louie DeDionisio spun after the
completion of a lap. Mark Hall
moved from the outside to the lead on the restart but a multi-car accident in
turn one ruined the restart. Hilyer won the next restart and began to pull away
from the field. Dustin Eckman spun on lap four for caution three. Hilyer led the
next three till Phil Knight spun then went to the pits on the yellow. Debris
stopped the race on the restart. Matt Lamphere, Pete Alspaugh and Dan Slye
brought out the yellow on lap nine. Points leader John Pencille was now third
with Glenn Slaney fourth. Hilyer lead the final laps to go down as the winner
with Hall second and Pencille third.
A second lap spin by Ed
Zimmer and Ron Bem stopped the Limited Late Model race after one-lap as Andy
Sweetland led with Ron Seeley second and Pat McGuire third. Brain Fardink, Mike
Coyle and others tangled on the backstretch for the second yellow on lap two.
The third attempt to complete lap two was successful. Andy Knight and Ron Bem
stopped on the front stretch of lap three. Bem had spun to avoid Knight. Tom
Hagberg was now third and McGuire forth. Lap three was completed but Aaron
Robinson spun on lap four. McGuire was second and Bobby Rohrer third. McGuire
took the lead on the restart as Sweetland slipped to second. Al Cressley had
mechanical problems on lap seven for the next caution. The event ran caution
free until a spin on lap fourteen slowed the race once more. McGuire was running
away from the second place car of Andy Sweetland who had successfully fended off
Rohrer’s attempted inside passes. Paul Briggs and Mike Moore caused another
caution on lap eighteen. McGuire led the remainder of the event for his seventh
win. Andy Sweetland hit the front stretch wall at the checkers as Bobby Rohrer
passed for second.
Bill Thomas led the first
two laps of the E-Mod feature until a spin by Mark Grabowski. A lap four spin by
Ken Drake caused caution two. AL Cressley had moved to second at this point with
Dave Hess Jr. running third. Hess passed Cressley at the half way as Thomas led.
Grabowski spun in turn two on lap eleven and Dale Applebee stopped for caution
three. Dave Hess passed Thomas for the lead on the restart as Cressley pulled
into the infield. Cressley stopped next to the speedway and the yellow flew for
the fourth time. Shane Applebee was third with Mike Hess fourth.
Hess led the final four for his first E-Mod win at Stateline.
A Joe Buccola spin stopped
the Budweiser Super Sportsman feature on lap two as Tom Kosinski lead with John
Robinson second. Randy Parmenter passed Robinson for second on lap two the
Kosinski for the lead on lap three. Dave Cummings moved into third with Don
McGuire fourth and Pat McGuire fifth. An incident involving Don Stanley and
Robinson caused caution two on lap five. Pat
McGuire took third on the restart, followed closely by Scott Bayle in fourth.
Parmenter won with Cummings second and Pat McGuire third.
