The “Hero’s Reunion”
was a wonderful gathering retired drivers headlined by Bobby Schnars, Squirt
John, Tom Dill, Ron Blackmer, Jim Scott, Lars Huling and Skip Furlow. Blinky
Litzinger brought an old jalopy and ran a few laps for the crowd. Mark Ramsey
won his fourth Spectator feature and Derrick Dickerson won his first in the
second Spectator feature. Jamie Erhard won the Outlaw Cadet feature narrowly
defeating point leader Ron Seeley at the line for his first win. Chad Carlson
held off Pat McGuire to win his first Budweiser Super Sportsman feature. Al
Cressley won his fourth E-Mod event beating Dave Hess Jr. to the finish by a car
length. Scott Johnson passed Dave Hess Jr. on lap nine then fought heavy lap
traffic to win his second Super Late Model feature. Scott Gurdak made a lane to
beat Andy Knight by a nose in the Limited Late Model feature.
Merle Burlingham crossed the line to lead the first lap of the first
spectator feature as the yellow appeared for Chris Couchenour who had spun in
turn four. Nate Lester was in the second spot followed by Justin Tatlow and Bob
Vogt Jr. Lester was the fastest on the restart and led lap two with Burlingham
second and Mark Ramsey moving into the third spot. Dana Wellington, Paul Norman
and Bill Van Volkenburg tangled on the backstretch with four down causing the
second yellow. An errant wheel and
axel from the Mike Coast car brought out the caution on lap six. Lester led the
next two laps then Kevin Brumett lost the handle collecting Brian Crandall in
turn two for the fourth yellow. The restart failed when Tatlow and Wellington
spun in four as the green fell. Ramsey grabbed the lead on the restart
relegating Lester to second. John Kelsey spun with eight complete. A fierce
battle for third on the restart sent Joe McMurdy through the infield leaving
Vogt in third. Couchenour got by Vogt with two to go then spun coming down for
the checkers as Tommy Fox snuck by Vogt for third, Lester finished second and
Ramsey won his fourth feature of the year.
Brian Wagner was the leader after one in the second Spectator event but
Derrick Dickerson led lap two followed by Brian Johnson and J. R. Brown. Wade
Watson and Wagner became hooked together on lap four stopping in turn two
causing the first caution of the event. Brown spun to avoid a slow car on lap
seven losing several spots. Jamie Schnars moved to second with Johnson third.
Schnars and Johnson tangled with one to go sending Schnars into got the fence
and causing Johnson to lose a wheel. Brown was back in the second spot with
Raymond Finch third as Dickerson led. Dickerson went on to win the event with
Brown second and Finch third.
Jeff Campbell was the first Outlaw Cadet to cross the line in their
feature event. Pete Alspaugh and Scott Lewis got into trouble on lap two
bringing out the yellow. Vern Sheldon was in the second spot with Louie
DeDionisio third. Campbell remained the leader after the restart with Sheldon
second and Jamie Erhard taking third from DeDionisio. Phil Knight and Pete
Alspaugh got together on lap seven for the second yellow. Campbell was still the
leader at the half way mark. Nathan Short was fourth pressing Sheldon for third
with five to go when the yellow flew for Chuck Parker who had spun coming out of
turn four. Short made a strong move to the front on the restart but tangled with
Campbell on the back stretch bringing out the caution and giving the lead to
Jamie Erhard with point leader Ron Seeley in the second spot followed by Dustin
Eckman in third. Sheldon lost several spots on the restart then one lap later
the yellow flew for Matt Lamphere who spun with two other cars setting up a
one-lap dash for the win. Seeley made a move under Erhard for the win but came
up just short giving Erhard his first win.
Chad Carlson, Mike Murray and Aaron Robinson were the leaders after one
in the Budweiser Super Sportsman feature. Murray faded to fourth with Randy
Parmenter taking the spot. Brian Crandall spun in two with four complete for the
first caution. Parmenter was second one lap after the restart and Don and Pat
McGuire were fourth and fifth. Aaron Robinson spun but kept going losing several
spots. Parmenter tapped Carlson with three remaining spinning into the infield.
Pat McGuire came up one car length short of the win at the checkers as Carlson
notched his first Budweiser Super Sportsman win.
Dave Surrena was out in front after one lap in the E-Mod feature followed
by Justin Carlson and Boyd Whitehead. Tim Churchill spun on lap three bringing
out the yellow. Mike Hess, Bill Thomas, Boyd Whitehead and Stu Rickard were
involved in an incident on the front stretch. Whitehead went to the pits short
one tire and the rest were placed in the rear of the field for the restart.
Surrena lost the lead to Carlson on the next circuit and Quincy Turner moved
into the third spot followed by Al Cressley in fourth. Turner took second on lap
seven and was challenging for the lead when the yellow flew for Churchill who
had spun in turn four. Carlson was placed back on the point followed by Turner,
Cressley and Surrena. Turner stumbled a little on the restart letting Cressley
by in turn two and one lap later Thomas stopped in turn two after a spin
bringing out the caution with eight laps completed. Dave Hess Jr. made an
appearance in the top five on the restart then one lap later passed Turner for
the third spot. Cressley had the lead at the line on lap twelve as Carlson fell
into the clutches of Dave Hess Jr. Hess took the spot from Carlson as the white
flag flew but did not have enough laps left to catch Cressley. It was Cressleys
fourth win of the season.
A ragged start saw Dave Hess Jr. jump to the front in the Super Late
Model event with Scott Johnson second and Rod Maloy third. Scott Gurdak and Doug
Eck were fourth and fifth and Dan Armbruster sixth. Randy Lobb passed Armbruster
on lap five then Bump Hedman took a wild ride doing a side for side roll on lap
six. Hedman was quickly out of the car and the safety crew called the tower to
report the driver was okay. Eck was pushed into the pits as they cleared the
Hedman car. Hess, Johnson, Maloy, Gurdak, Armbruster and Lobb were the top six
cars. Chris Hackett and Ward Schell were seventh and eight. Armbruster faded
after the restart as Lobb and Hackett moved up to battle Maloy and Gurdak for
the third spot. Lobb was turned and backed in to the fence after contact with
Maloy on lap nine. Johnson beat Hess to the line to lead just as the yellow flew
for Lobb. Johnson, Hess, Maloy, Gurdak, Hackett and Rich Gardner were the top
six for the restart. Al Crocker passed teammate Gardner for the sixth spot after
the restart and Johnson stretched his lead. Maloy passed Hess and Hackett took
fourth from Gurdak as the yellow flew for Dick Litz who had spun in turn one.
Johnson led at by ten car lengths at the half way mark with Maloy, Hess and
Hackett fighting for the runner up spot. Maloy seemed to slow coming out of turn
four on lap seventeen letting Hackett and Hess by. Johnson at checked out
leading by a straight away and just getting into lap traffic. Johnson fought
heavy lap traffic finally breaking into the clear with one to go. Hackett and
Litz made contact coming out of four as Johnson won allowing Hess the second
spot and relegating Hackett to third. Steve Moynihan
and Bobby Rohrer were out in front of the Limited Late Model feature when the
yellow flew for Les Lyon in turn one. Andy Knight took the lead from Moynihan
after the restart then Rohrer moved by for second on lap five. Dan Shellhouse
spun on lap seven bringing out the first caution. Scott Gurdak was fourth for
the restart and Pat McGuire was eight. Rohrer was up beside Knight at the
halfway point and Gurdak was third. Tom Schnars was fifth followed by McGuire.
McGuire was fifth with five laps remaining as Knight lead Rohrer and Gurdak by a
car length. Gurdak passed Rohrer for the second spot as the white flew then
tried a high side move in turn four moving up beside Knight at the line. Sparks
flew as Gurdak scrapped the wall defeating Knight by a nose at the line.
