Saturday May 4th, 2013 Busti, NY: Opening night at Stateline Speedway sponsored by Kenny’s Green Star Automotive was well attended by fans and racers. Several racers commented on the track condition being the best they have ever seen on any opening night.
Jim Kibbe can from fourth to win his first Super Sportsman feature after a lap five pass of veteran Don McGuire.
Twenty Street Stocks took the green from Mark Matthews with Brian Crandall the leader but the yellow flew before lap two was complete. Crandall, Brandon Groters, Jason Covey, Dennis Asel and Vic Earle Sr. were the leaders. Crandall led lap two with Covey second and Bobby Powell third from his 10th starting spot. The second yellow slowed the event with six laps completed. Crandall was still the leader but last years champ Chris Withers was second with Powell third. Lap traffic slowed Crandall just enough on lap ten to allow Withers the inside lane and the lead. Groters, Guy Adams, Kevin Golden tangled with eleven laps done for caution three. Powell and Withers bracketed Crandall on the restart but Crandall held the lead. Powell nearly spun losing several spots just before the fourth yellow. Crandall took the white with Withers trying first the inside then the outside for the winning pass but could not get it done.
Don McGuire led the first lap of the Super Sportsman feature from his number two starting spot. A lap four spin by Kendelle Kosinski caused the first caution of the event. McGuire lost the top spot on lap five to Jim Kibbe then gave up second to Dan Nocero Jr. Yellow number two flew on lap nine. The last caution flew with two laps remaining but Kibbe survived the restart for his career first win in the class.
Last year’s Super Late Champ Dutch Davies did not make the feature event but his older brother Ron started on the pole. Dutch Davies wrecked in his qualifying heat and was unable to start the feature. Ron Davies led the field into turn one on the initial green with Chub Frank second at the flag followed by Rich Gardner and Dick Barton. Darrell Bossard spun to a stop in turn four on lap two for caution number one. Davies got a huge jump on the restart with Frank 10 car lengths behind at the line. Matt Urban was fourth just before the yellow flew as Scott Gurdak had jumped the cushion in turn three stopping up against the wall. Davies, Frank, Gardner, Urban, Hackett, Barton, Boom Briggs, John Volpe, Bump Hedman and Chad Valone were the top ten. Volpe spun for caution three with four laps complete. Boozel slid into the infield on the restart but the yellow did not come out then one lap later Gurdak spun collecting Dave Lyon. Davies continued to best Frank on the restarts with Gardner third followed by Briggs and Urban. Randy Lobb slowed in turn one with nine laps complete then retired when the yellow flew. At the half way point Davies had a half a straight lead over Frank. Gardner lost third to Briggs one lap later and Barton was now fifth. Barton bested Gardner on lap nineteen as Davies just kept extending his lead. The race was for third as Barton tested Briggs in every corner. Davies won with Frank a distant second and Briggs beat Barton by a nose at the line.
Butch Southwell led the first circuit of the E-Mod feature. A yellow slowed the race on lap two with Southwell, Ron Davies, Leonard Enos, Cale Crocker and Dan Davies the leaders. A stalled car caused the second yellow on the restart before lap two was complete. Ron Davies scraped the wall on the restart allowing Southwell and small advantage. Davies came back on lap four just as the yellow flew for Greg Johnson. Enos grabbed second from Ron Davies on the restart. Tony Marotto caused caution four with six laps down. Ron Davies regained the second spot and Enos slipped to fourth as Brent Rhebergen moved to third. Caution five happened with eleven laps complete followed one lap later with caution six. Brian Wilson spun for caution seven with sixteen of the twenty laps complete. Butch Southwell held the lead through the final laps fending off John Woodward Jr. in the final circuits.
Garret Stephen, Joe Buccola and Matt Harvey tangled on the initial start of the Crate Late Model race. Zack Carley was on the pole with Chad Ruhlman second, Damian Bidwell third and Bob Dorman fourth. A lap five caution caused by Skip Jackson slowed the event with Carley on top followed by Bidwell and Dorman. Dorman and Bidwell make contact coming out of turn two forcing Dorman back to fourth. Dorman quickly recovered then regained the third spot but several car lengths behind Bidwell. Ryan Scott came from deep in the field to the number four spot with twelve laps complete. Dorman made a last lap pass for second as Carley won his feature event.
Bill Reeves, Chad Schauers, Steve Moynihan and Mike Moore were in the first two rows for the Limited Late feature. Mike Lozowski had problems in turn four on the initial start forcing a complete restart of the event. Schauers slipped under Reeves to lead the first lap with veteran Mike Moore third. A three car tangle collected Jake Finnerty, Dustin Eckman and John Cline for the second caution on lap four. Chris Ottaway made it three wide for second on the restart but fell back to fourth as Reeves and Moore ran side by side. Ottaway came back two laps later for the runner up spot then a spin caused caution three. Schauers, Ottaway and Moore led. Ryan Scott joined the fray on the restart. Schauers gave way to Ottaway then a charging Steve Kania. Kania took the top spot with Scott in tow. A fading Schauers lost third to Reeves with Ottaway fifth. A lap sixteen incident collected Moore, Cline and Lozowski for caution four. Reeves fought back for third with three laps remaining. Kania was the winner with Scott second and Reeves third.
Casey Burch passed three cars on the first circuit of the Super Challenger class to take the lead in their feature event. Steve Keith tangled with a lap car while running second and was forced to retire from the race. Burch led the final circuits for the win with Travis Darling second.
